Agents aren't the reason for money in football. It's sponsors, fans and billionaires buying clubs and investing insane amounts. If the players get less the rest of the money would stay at the clubs. If you want less money in football you should kick out all rich people owning clubs and pumping in 100s of millions.

edit: I agree that agents are not the reason why there's too much money in football, but I still feel that they contribute to the inflation of prices (and wages), which contributes to teams wanting billionaire money because it's the only way they can be competitive in the current market.

I don't know how European law works, but insofar as I know, associations can make up their own rules, right? So if the UEFA decides that clubs cannot play in Champions/Europa League if any player earns more than 1million a year, then that should put a quick end to giant transfer fees and salaries. Of course, where the money goes then is a huge problem. The TV money, sponsor contracts, etc. are still vast cash cows, and that isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Someone being a good salesman is not necessarily a good thing. edit: I agree that agents are not the reason why there's too much money in football, but I still feel that they contribute to the inflation of prices (and wages), which contributes to teams wanting billionaire money because it's the only way they can be competitive in the current market. For the clubs yes but not for the players. His job is to place and negotiate for his players. If he does it well I see nothing wrong with that. If a club pays for a bad player that's their own responsibility. As to your 2nd point that might be true I'm not sure. I don't think that getting rid of all agents is the right solution since players will be collateral damage. Reducing their power somehow makes sense though. @acrofales: yes putting a cap on wages is an easy way to reduce players salaries. I was talking about money in football as a sport though not about wages. The thing is that with a wage cap the clubs will pocket the money instead. It's just transferring money from one group of people to the other.

When agents get huge % of transfers it's usually because they helped finance early transfers of those players, or invested in the players themselves. In these cases they're acting as financial intermediaries to the benefit of smaller clubs and the players. If agents are so bad then why do players keep hiring them?

Because knowing how to manage big bucks =/= knowing how to play football? Fiscal optimisation/evasion is difficult, rare are the people with the network necessary to manage funds.
