dont get me wrong, if Canada plays to the team they have, they are the best team by a ways. But Im not as big a fan of the lineup this year and its hard to defend olympic championships!

Complete and total olympic fuck ups are a world wide phenomenon. Montreal took 30 years to pay for the Olympic stadium they built... it cost $1.5 billion ( in 1975 ) to make the stadium and the place is horrible... the roof has caved in more than once... etc etc...
It'll be interesting to see if Sochi ends up being a bigger financial disaster than Montreal.

The Calgary games were a success, even turning a net surplus despite being the most expensive to date.
Some get it right, some get it wrong. Many buildings from the Olympics in Greece now sit abandoned same with Beijing. At least the Olympic Stadium in Montreal got some use after it was built. I don't think Montreal had the worst Olympics financially (I could be wrong though...I am) they certainly were not however a model for success.
I agree it will be interesting to look back at Sochi in a few years and see where they are at.
(Edit) Found some arguments that yes Montreal 1976 remains, the worst Olympic event for a host city (financially). source

if u get a chance to visit Olympic Stadium... do it... for the simple fact of being able to say " this piece of garbage costs $1.5 billion in 1975 money? wtf "
although it did get some use.. it was a horrible baseball stadium and football field.

Guess that means Lundqvist is going to ruin your entire Olympics.
Oh and as far as curling goes, Niklas gonna freakin' carry this shait all the way.

Can anyone get me the version of Siberiade used at the end of the history part of the opening ceremony? It's the song as the girl lets go of the red balloon.
The synth in the original version if off-putting.

If there's going to be economic benefit from the Sochi Olympics it's going to be over time. As it was, Sochi was a second-class summer resort that was passed over for Crimea, Turkey, etc. It's trying to market itself as an all-around summer/winter resort now. So where does this leave the future of Sochi?
I don't know any comparable cases, the closest I can think of is Atlantic City, NJ going from a decrepit, worn-out version of Las Vegas to a family-friendly fun town. AC is in very similar conditions to that part of Russia, relatively speaking. Tons of money was injected by the state government into that (most of it into advertising), and in recent months there's been a lot of direct action from the state government to boost the city, overriding local authority. AC was (and if everything works out, will be) a huge moneymaker for New Jersey, and I think Putin's trying to make Sochi to be a potential huge moneymaker for Russia.
And like in Sochi, nothing in Atlantic City is going well... yet. The biggest casino, Revel, is scheduled to operate at a loss until 2017, and there's a lot of poverty/unemployment. Just like Europe vs. Sochi, there's also other family resorts close by that are more established which means people from New York are going to be going there, before coming to AC. Philadelphia might switch more easily. Putin isn't the most honest guy around, but he does have an interest in saying "we want to be in the center of everything", and Sochi is a great opportunity to do that. So based on what I see over here, Sochi is going to probably go through a few years of hard times as all of the efforts, assuming the effort keeps coming in of course, start to kick in. But then it will recover.
On the Russian side, Grozny looks very nice ever since it was bombed to shit in the 2000's, and Moscow/Petersburg have been growing because of the huge money flow that the two cities get. So yes, if Putin really wants Sochi to be a good city to visit, it will become a good city to visit.

economic benefit is IMPOSSIBLE for Sochi, the Olympics cost like 50 billion, this place will never make it up Not even the Chinese were so crazy

Russia is hosting the World Cup in four years. This means that as long as nothing explodes, the Olympic stadia are simply going to be converted into World Cup stadia.
A lot of it is also going into utilities/roads, which is really money that doesn't have to be spent on these things later.

This Olympiad is not going to be close to paying for itself. And hardly anything can be reused for the world cup - that's just gonna be another example of incredible wastefulness to show off Russia on the global stage.

That they run through peoples houses, or on both sides/around them so they couldn't even get water or electricity and getting answered with "If you don't like it, move". Sounds like a good thing, sure.

ac is pretty much a warzone if you step outside of the casinos/convention center?
ac is only a money maker in spite of the surrounding area being camden-levels of shitty because for years it was the nearest large scale casino op. now that ny and pa are springing up casinos, even if they're small, ac profits have been shrinking. online gambling run through those casinos was a life raft tossed to struggling casinos.
that aside, i dont even think that it is a good comparison for this.

Yeah she absolutely killed it. And Agreed I really liked them a lot.
I don't understand figuring skating that much though. In singles, why'd the woman who bombed the triple axel get such a high score otherwise? nothing there seemed to be that great outside of that to make up for it. also, what's with the timer and bonus around 1:30?
