I predicted Canada, USA, Sweden, and I still believe that's how it will go down, although because of the brackets, Sweden will get the silver, and USA the bronze. Both semi-finals looks pretty open though.
Sweden cant win because they havent brought their olympic hero.

Fins, cocky as always. I actually think Finland will win over Sweden, but who knows. Maybe we will play at least one good game this tournament.

another Raynor insight ends up being bang on the money!
Tavares out for the year with an MCL tear. The way Nicholson was muffling his answers and covering his mouth... i just knew Tavares' knee was totally fucked.
And, in the women's vs. men's hockey and which is more entertaining. Doug Maclean, a guy who knows a thing of two about hockey on every level, has stated the most entertaining game so far was USA v. Canada in women's hockey.
the Swiss v. Sweden bronze medal game was great. heads will roll in sweden's women's program for this loss.

that really blows about tavares. i love watching him play. the isles had the slimmest of chances anyway, but the owners will be looking at that come negotiation for 2018
not being an acl is good, but miniscus is a bitch to fuck up. acl is actually probably prefered to that. maybe it doesnt matter as much for hockey players as it does for soccer or football. different knee motions

the meniscus tear is the least of his worries. artest was back on the court in 12 days after a meniscal tear.
its the MCL that is the problem.

I tore my acl and meniscus and had surgery for it on Nov 1st, and today might be the first day I am allowed to skate since. He should be in a better situation

this will be like an NHL hockey game played on big ice. no real favourite. USA has the better goalie.
Fin v. Sweden. both teams are badly banged up...both teams have really good goalies.
imo both games are too close to call. enjoy the fire works!
the cryin' shame about both of these games is how poor ice conditions are.

What is big ice? is that an ice hockey term?

It's what the Americans call a normal sized hockey rink. They play on smaller ones because...i don't know. Better games? Better economy?

The US is always a scary team with the way they tend to overachieve at marquee international tournaments, but with their play so far they are not only scary but have to be considered the favourites going forward. That said, I'd never bet against Canada.

the ice surface Canada and the USA usually play on is 61 metres long and 26 metres wide
the ice surface at Sochi is 61 metres long and 30 metres wide.
personally , i prefer playing on the larger ice surface. but, every one has their own opinion on that.

Another important thing that often gets missed is that the dimensions of different zones on the ice vary quite a bit as well between the Olympic and NHL rinks. While width is the obvious difference, the neutral zone (area between blue lines) is longer on Olympic ice and the offensive zone (blue line to goal line) is much shorter. These, more than anything, change how the game needs to be played, for better or for worse. On Olympic ice, you also have a longer area behind the net and (I think) a wider crease area.
I've been a fan of the larger ice surfaces for some time but find myself questioning that as of late. The small offensive zone seems to encourage teams to pile players between the face-off dots, limiting chances to the (far) outside. It's hard to get a good cycle going because there is no distance between the point-men and the defending forwards as you have so much less front-and-back space to work with. They'll give you the shorts from the left/right all day long as they come from that much further away due to the wider ice. I don't know. I guess it's less boring than the neutral zone trap.

because the NHL does not know how to deal with the ever growing size of their players they've been constantly changing where the blue lines are.. where the goal lines are.. the NHL added the trapezoid and removed the red line.
these constant changes are a sign that something more radical needs to be done to accomodate a group of players that are far larger than the 5'9"/175cm height , 155 pound/70 kilogram weight guys that played the game back when "the sport was invented " as KevinSorbo stated in his previous post.
it was funny when i first introduced the larger ice solution i was trashed hard core. and since then guys like Ray Shero and Brian Burke have moved closer to my position on this issue... this is what happens when you have "a man ahead of his time".
increasing ice surface size is as inevitable as the increase in size of the players themselves.
it'll be interesting to see how big the ice surface is for the 2018 olympics in Korea.
|
ITT: JimmyJRaynor is the originator of the large ice solution. If only the NHL decision makers spent more time reading internet forums dedicated to a decade-old RTS, this problem could already be solved!

true!
now i do not know if the final photo posted had this intent...
