I'm not saying that he's the worst video game talking head on the internet (plenty of that out there), just that I got tired of it after a while. I basically watched his stuff religiously since.... was it No More Heroes? Something around that time, until last year some time. But after some time the talking fast and being biased towards certain types of games thing didn't do it for me anymore.

I wish Yahtzee would go back to making games. I loved the Chzo Mythos tetralogy.

Spends 2 minutes philosophizing about how greedy the concept of the game is before even starting to talk about the game itself.
Is so totally uninvested in 2d Mario that he calls the differences between SMB/SMB3/SMW/NSMB just "cosmetic".
Seems to have failed to discover the 10/100 Mario Challenge modes (despite basically every streamer having played these modes at some point), and therefore derides the game for not giving you a curated experience for actually playing Mario levels (despite the two aforementioned modes doing just that).
Not Yahtzee's best work, really. Seems like he really just went into the game with preconceived notions about it, took offense at certain gameplay elements (e.g. progression-based gameplay to unlock editor features), and then didn't play enough of the rest to form a proper opinion before firing up his recording software and lambasting the game.

It's Mario Maker. It'll be forgotten about in a month the only reason it's even worth mentioning is because of the IP.
Unless you're telling me Littlebigplanet is some huge success I'm not aware of I doubt Mario Maker will somehow be seen as some start of something amazing.
Also wait, Mario maker locked away editing levels behind progression? That's the opposite of good idea. Or are we talking about the you can't post a level unless you can beat it thing?

If I understand it correctly, in fantasy there's no limit to this whatsoever but people still build around a single theme typically. So, my main question is that in terms of community stuff, are more abstract themes (ex// "all the walking robot things", "things with wings", "random units of 5-ish figures led a commander modelled after a wwe wrestler (like john cena leading the ultramarines)", etc.) looked down upon compared to race/lore/faction themes like "space marines" or "orcs"?
Also knockoff warhammers are like way cheaper than real warhammers, which is neat since I'm more into decorating them then making anything tournament legal etc. + Show Spoiler +Again, can only really speak to 40k.
No one really looks down on anyone for making allied armies, for the most part. If you're just doing it to cheese, then yeah people will bitch. But in fact, there are a lot of really cool allied armies out there, especially if you put a lot of time into customizing them into a consistent theme.
Rules wise, allies are a thing. Different armies have different levels of alliance based on how likely they are to work together in the lore. But if you want, you can ally anything with anything with varying amount of drawback. For example, any Imperium Army (Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus) is buddy buddy with any other faction, but have varying amounts of downsides for allying with any Chaos army.
If you're talking about just making a counts-as army that's a mix of different models with a consistent theme but is using a certain set of rules, that's generally ok, as long as it's really clear what's what and you're not trying to pass off a Guardsman as a Daemon Prince. I saw a really cool Orks/Renegades (Chaos Imperial Guard) list that had Ork gunners on the artillery pieces and Ork-themed Daemons. I've also seen Necrons kitted out with Eldar bits to make an army that looks Necron-y but played with the Eldar ruleset.
Generally, if you actually want to play, then you'll want to stick to one army, at least to start with (probably to around 1000 points, as allying at below point is pretty tough), but if you're just looking to buy some models and make dioramas or whatever, then go nuts. Thanks! I think the information of regarding "counts-as" armies was especially helpful to my understanding of things. Right now I'm liking the idea of an adeptas sororitas army, with signs instead of flags, and they're all some variation of "[cisheteropatriachy / white supremacy / capitalism / biological determinism / settler colonialism / etc.] is heresy". Google searches have shown me that people get some serious nerdrage about gendering space marines, so I think thoroughly queering things will be cathartic, at least. The sisters of battle models seem like they're all one-piece or few very pieces even when you get a plastic copy, so I'll probably have to use quite a few pieces to do what I want, but I haven't carved anything in a while (I have a wooden bretonnian trebuchet, and a few small things I didn't put as much effort into leftover from kid years) so hoping it'll be fun! Actually I guess also another question: if I make shit out of wood (ie obviously not GW materials, but not that green stuff stuff) is that cool or no? Cool, but keep in mind that if you play Sisters you're going to have a hard time doing it. Their model range is the most outdated in all of 40k (and it shows, they still use some metal models), and they have the only codex without a physical release (aside from non-armies like the Inquisition or Legion of the Damned). There are alternative models if you're interested in going that route. Look around and there's plenty out there. One of the more popular ones recently is the "Toughest Girls in the Galaxy" line from Raging Heroes. Other people just use Space Marines but then get female heads from other companies and do some mods to create Sisters of Battle, as seen in something like this, or other places around the internet. When doing a counts-as army, the more effort you put into it the more likely people are to accept it. No one wants to play against Eldar with the weapons swapped out doing "counts as Orks", but plenty of people will play if it's obvious that work went into it. As for wood... I dunno, I guess it depends. I've never seen someone do it before, not in a full capacity. Again, it probably depends on how much effort you put into it. A roughly Rhino-shaped hunk of wood with a coat of paint on it won't pass on anyone's table, but if you have a tank chassis and a bunch of wooden extra bits hand-carved all over it and painted to look good, then I don't see anyone having a problem with it. Making characters out of wood would probably be pretty difficult (if possible at all), but I can see you making some wicked bases out of it.
Yeah I think a lot of my pieces will be counts-as level mods, since the range/diversity in the sisters base figure is pretty unimpressive. I won't be doing an entirely cisfemale army though so I'm not too worried about my range of mod options. I'm trying to keep a minimal budget on it so I'll probably stick to using totally-not-warhammers from china, which restricts my range of pieces but I can figure that out later (that nurse you linked me to is p.wicked tho). Whatever I do will probably try to keep the same general aesthetic of "normal size humans in not-big armour with robes". Robes being trivial mods because cloth is cheaper than plastic.
Bases are a good idea. I think something like a rhino would be nearly trivial even with just like dollar store popsicle sticks, but yeah I'm more talking smaller simpler pieces out of branches from deadwood or trimmings. A character head would be beyond my current abilities, but I could probably handle a pair of space marine legs (in 2 or 3 pieces) and chunky things like tank bits are easy. Unfortunately my crafting abilities extend far beyond my painting abilities, so there's always a chance of abrubt and total failure.
edit: actually, this is as good a time as any for me to try my hands at moulding and casting stuff myself, so I might try that out too.

Rather, the first time you open the editor, you don't get the full toolset available, and the tools are slowly made available to you as you use the editor. It's time-based, and the timing requirements are trivially easy (like 5 minutes per set of tools, with the full functionality being unlocked in <1 hour).
Initially the tool releases were staggered across the release week of the game, but it has basically no relevance to anyone playing it now, and isn't actually a barrier to anyone who uses the editor for like an hour, but I guess Yahtzee took issue with it. Either that or he didn't fully understand what was going on and jumped to conclusions about what unlocks the other features rather than actually trying to use the editor for more than 5 minutes and realizing unlocks are automatic, and simply timed to ease you slowly into the editor functionality (which seems ridiculous but given how the rest of the review points to him not giving the game any chance whatsoever, not impossible).

So I had a realization while taking out the garbage this morning. The best part about pre dawn is it's still dark out and it's generally clear skies, I get to see the stars. I get to see the Orion constellation. I have a lovely view of it and it's been something I enjoy looking at sense I was a child. Anyway it occurred to me that I play a game where I could actually just go visit those stars in said game.
I'm struck with how amazing technology is that I get to see the stars that formed part of my childhood in a game of all things. It's fucking amazing. I just thought that was cool.

What is your opinion on Star Citizen? I have a friend who is super into it but I'm rather pensive. Feels like they given a lot of cool "tech" but not a lot of actual game. Wondering what someone that plays a space game a lot thinks about it.

My brother-in-law is full hype mode on it. I think it's incredibly ambitious and could be a very cool game, but I'm going to wait until it's more substantial before I get too excited.

To be honest I have my doubts on how they are going to deliver that kind of scale. It is a massive undertaking that is trying to do what many dev's including Roberts have dreamed of doing and failed. Having said that, It's something I keep an eye on it and when it hits release I'll be much more inclined to give opinions on it.
My biggest issue at the moment is the blacking out in fighters, which I find a tad silly to be a thing that exists in a future of Quantum drives that no ones managed to create some sort of inertial compensator.
I wouldn't invest money in it until at least Alpha 2.0 which will be a small bubble of the actual game assuming it works as the tech demos and videos showed it. Which if it works is going to be pretty freakin awesome.
I think people are realizing why Braben and Frontier are going with the release one thing at a time with just a core game base as it's clear trying to work it all in at once is a massive fucking undertaking.
Just to make it clear I do think Star Citizen is going to be pretty neat, but I'd wait until it has more to show or is released to buy and play it. Also props for bringing in classic Wing commander VA's for Squadron 42.

I went to a panel at PAX East that had several game devs, Roberts being one of them. He seems like a really awesome, super ambitious guy who wants nothing in the world except for this game to be good. Whether or not he achieves it remains to be seen, but I really hope he succeeds with this.

And I think it's pretty amazing that the number of stars we know about are so infinitesimally few compared to what is actually out there. It boggles my mind, in a good way.

Yeah Robert's has always been an idea and push the limits kind of guy. I think his biggest weakness with SC is that he works best with some form of oversight and normally that comes from a publisher or a lead dev of some kind. As he's his own boss he's got no one to really restrain him and I think a lot of the delays and feature creep of SC can be pointed at this as the origin.
From the citizencon information released it looks like he's gotten himself restrained and focused so I'm pretty interested to see the game speed up it's development.
That's the dream anyway.
