I have a friend whose hobby is to go on long rants about the increasing prominence of anti-intellectualism in America. He's sadly very correct in his observations.

That's a symptom and effect, not a cause.
It's a pretty nebulous topic for sure, and it's probably safe to say there is no single, or even multiple clearly identifiable causes of the phenomenon, but rather, a combination of many disparate factors came together.
Or we can just blame the electronic media and popular culture and religion. That works too. Again, I think America is rather unique in how proud and arrogant people are of their own ignorance. It is socially accepted, even encouraged, to draw a equivalence with things you know nothing about with things that are not worth knowing about. Note that there is nothing wrong with ignorance, which is merely a lack of knowledge, but it is the prevailing attitude towards ignorance that becomes problematic.

In my case it's that I was homeschooled until I was 18 and and just never had an interest in music genres, I know what I like and that's what matters.
Then again, I have always hated idiots and been an introvert...so I can't comment on how highschools in the US are.

The people who run our country decided that an informed citizenry is bad for profits. Thus, they are undercutting the ability and even the desirability to be smart for most people.

There's is absolutely nothing wrong with an ignorance in a subject that is of no interest to you. But when presented with knowledge of said subject, the standard reaction is to say "WOW I can't believe there's so much detail here that's so fucking stupid fucking nerd lololol."
It's all the more amazing how often something like this rears its head on, of all things, a website dedicated to STARCRAFT PROFESSIONAL GAMING, a topic that would net the exact same reaction from well over 99% of the world population.

It wasn't a simple matter of ignorance of a subject, it was ignorance combined with the false pretense of knowledge and the derision of actual knowledge.

Also I sometimes use hyperbole. I know this may be a foreign concept to you, but most of us refer to this as "humor". No one really cares how much you do/don't know about a subject, but I will occasionally make make snide remarks at people who like to act snooty about that knowledge.

I'm not going to degrade what you know about music, I have just as much stupid knowledge about various shooters, since my friends and I played the shit out of BF3 and BO2, and because of that I know a lot of the best routes to go from A to B, various glitch spots and stupid mechanics to abuse to win.
I didn't like Jpop/Kpop styled music a few years ago, but recently I've been listening to it more and more and broadening what I like and what I don't, same is true about rock (started with stuff from the 70s/80s/90s because that's what my parents listened to), moved to country as they started liking that and I was forced to listen to it while in the car and then I started finding what I liked on my own.
Most of the time I feel like people just don't want to experiment or listen to things, like I don't enjoy deathmetal or similar styles, because of the guttural vocals and overall sound, even if the instrumental portions are amazing. I have tried to listen to Death metal and I guess Speedcore? and can't get into them, but stuff like symphonic metal/progressive rock? Yeah, I can listen to that almost nonstop. A more radical example might be rap, I like stuff from the 80s/90s/early 2000s but can't stand anything more recent unless it has more rock influences.
E: I'm going to go back to deciding what I want to do, either play FR or derust on LoL, both while listening to Disney songs on Pandora.
