Not sure if heart of the swarm questions are being asked in here but shouldn't matter. im asking for a little advice on my engagements and maybe some other areas of my game that i can improve. take it, im pretty good at this game i just want some outside criticism.

the idea of MY build: its a oracle/msc rush. i get the msc out super fast in time to deal with any reapers, oracles either let me harass or in this particular replay, contain. they also allow me to be safe vs any early pressure a terran can throw at me. coupled with nexus cannon theyre super strong defensively in the early game. if it wasn't for having a high templar reserve at each base i probably would have died to each his counter attacks.

in this pvt despite being so far ahead i am rolled in each fight. some of the things i think i should have done:
- scouted his fast third cc and placed mine maybe 2-3 minutes earlier than i originally did
- should have hit a timing before ghosts when i had an upgrade advantage
- i think i need more gateways
- i struggle hard vs mass ghosts im not entirely sure how to deal with them


i felt like i was outmacroing him, but losing every engagement. if he doesnt lose everything so cost inefficiently at the end of the game im not sure if the game would have went in my favor.

any criticism would be lovely! trying to grow as a player.

What is the optimal way to micro colossi? I heard that they do initial damage and also after the lasers cross.

I'm pretty sure the damage only occurs when lasers cross. There really isn't much micro involved with the colossi themselves tbh, at best i focus them on squishy or valueble units like marines, hydras and infestors.

Expanding on what above post said, in large Colossus numbers (I'm looking at you, PvP) make sure to get a concave.
You will lose Colossus battles simply because you didn't set up a concave in time and your opponent gets more Colossus hits. It's happened to me waaay too often.

You can kite with colossi too if units get close to them. Nothing special though. Can be game deciding though, especially in say PvZ during a battle if zerg tries to run their roaches in to snipe colossi. Colossi walk above the rest of your units so you can use that to literally use your army as a wall while kiting the colossi away.

Yeah but that's basic overall micro. There's no special trick to getting more damage out of your colossus shots, which is what he was asking about.

No specific micro involved really, apart from pulling them back when they are weak.

A typical example might be your first Colossus vs the 10 min MM timing vs Terran. It is imperative you don't lose this Colossus, or if you do, you should have already thwarted his attack. A high level Terran with good micro (pre-splitting into a concave, letting Marauders tank if he has them, good kiting) will make you work to save your Colossus. If you can, quickly focus your Colossus on the largest chunk of units, for maximum splash damage, but for the most part, just keep it alive.

Remember, Stimmed Marauders tear through Colossuses like butter, be sure to have Sentries or a nice wall of Zealots in front to match that DPS.

Regarding Colossus positioning in late-game PvT, it can often be advantageous to keep them nearer the front of your army so that any attempts by the Terran to send Ghosts in prior to attacking you are instantly shut down. This of course relies on good map control since you need to know that the Terran isn't going to just bumrush your Colossi and focus them down, but I've found it to be really useful against Terran players who lead with Cloaked Ghosts as it really cuts down their EMP/Snipe utility. I do this. I keep my Collossuses in the middle/tending to the front. I should do that Obsever thing, but honestly, I'm too lazy :D Although my playstyle in lategame PvT involves having 4-6 Observers for passive map contrl (so that I can force good engagements).

The Observer thing really makes a big different, it's something that everyone should do IMO. Tagging them to Colossi is convenient because they're usually out at the back of the fight, making the Observer less likely to get sniped, but tagging them on to any reasonably durable unit works just fine. Just remember to re-tag them after a big engagement, 'cause if you don't and the unit they were tagged to has died, they will get left behind

I also play with a lot of Observers in PvT. It's good for drop defence, but in HotS I fear that it doesn't matter if you know the Medivacs are coming T_T

Well, for the midgame I only have 2. One for the major attach path, and one to scout Terran army/base. One/two spotting Pylons for Medivac attack paths. Can't spare any Robo building time :D
