It's a sad day indeed as we bid farewell to our loyal and trusted companion. He stayed by our side through thick and thin, and was always there to comfort and guide us. He was someone to turn to when real life got a little too real, or when we just needed a break. Whenever we were down, he was always there to make everything better. We could always count on him to make our days brighter and little more special. For the past five months, he was our best (and, quite possibly, our only) friend. Goodbye, Starcraft II Beta. You will be missed.

And in the meantime, we're still here giving you coverage of the best of what Starcraft 2 has to offer. Speaking of which, the writing crew's got tons of wonderful SC2 articles prepped to keep you busy as bees over the break. It's going to be really special, so keep your eyes peeled!

In the frozen tundras of Scandinavia and the the barren outback of Australia/New Zealand, two kings were crowned this weekend. Rising star FreshCrewBro edged out fellow Viking SjoW 3-2 in an action-packed TvT series, while Western Australia representative Filthy took out the Protoss powerhouse Azz, followed by our favorite Australian Zerg mOOnGLaDe from the winner's bracket.
LS Gamers Weekend Open
Familiar faces show yet again as HuK defeats CauthonLuck, securing himself a nice $160 grand prize. If you liked the casts, LSGamers has a weekly show that you might want to check out.
Zotac Cup # 16
DeMusliM adds another gold to his wall of medals, trouncing finalist jimpo 3-1, who handed him the only loss of the tournament. For the hundredth time, well done, DeMusliM, with another great showing!
KitCat Tournament
Drewbie brings home another gold for Root Gaming, as well as a nifty slightly used Radeon X800XT 256MB DDR3 Video Card, beating Stalife 3-1 in the finals of this last-minute tribute to the beta. Thanks for hosting this, Tesla and Caterina!
Day[9]'s King of the Beta Tournament
Featuring the most successful players of the beta, this 8 player invite tournament started off with a bang as TheLittleOne beat HuK and IntoTheRainbow dominated DIMAGA in day 1 of the group stages. But they're not out of it yet. Keep in touch to find out who will be crowned the King of the Beta.
![[image loading]](/staff/Saracen/WeeklyRoundUp/Week92.jpg)
That's right, folks. This lovely man or lady is your one and only IntoTheRainbow.
Korean Phase 2 Tournaments
The Koreans are at it again, hosting two more clan wars in spectacular fashion. First, Zenith took center stage, demolishing WeRRa 5-2. Next, oGs.Ensnare showed absolutely dominating play, all-killing Prime 5-0. But it didn't stop there. GARIMTO hosted his very own tournament, the WTA tournament, where the best of Korea battled it out. There, oGs.Cool defeated fellow Zerg Check and then Baneling busted the Terran Hannibal to try his luck againt TheStC in the finals. With the series tied 2-2 and everything on the line, Cool went all-in with another Baneling bust, which was scouted and properly dealt with, leaving us with a disappointing end to an otherwise brilliant series. So congratulations to our phase two Korean champ, TheStC, and runner up oGs.Cool!

Yes, beta is over. So how did you stack up in that two-week grind? Check here. And while you're at it, here are some interesting statistics from the top 100 players, as well as the top diamond players. And maybe you want to flex those emuscles and strut that epeen. Check out the SC2 signature generator to show the world how awesome you really are.
Want SC2 loaded and ready to go right on the 27th? Worried about ridiculous shipping delays and endless lines at the local game store? Don't worry, digital purchase has got your back. And, speaking of SC2 and money, the Wall Street Journal's got some SC2 coverage as well.
As usual, our Strategy Forum's been churning out post after post of stimulating Starcraft discussion, and some exemplary threads have come out of it. If you're a bit out of the loop, some amazing ways to use and abuse the Infestor and Void Ray have been discovered. And, once again, Plexa's firing up another insightful discussion, this time about muta/ling in ZvP. Not only is this a great pit-stop for those of you looking for some variation in the matchup, but it shows you how to make a quality Strategy Forum OP as well (it would be amazing if we could template this). Finally, be on the lookout for this mechanics compliation thread by FC.Strike that's bound to be an invaluable resource in the future.
What's new in the e-celeb scene, you ask? Well, Artosis has nabbed a fantastic interview with UpMagiC. As an added bonus, you get to watch him duke it out with our favorite BM Zerg, IdrA, who's the subject of yet another interview here. In other news, HuK leaves vT gaming and joins MoMaN on the French team Millenium. Also, a new casting duo has hit the scene, so let's give them a warm welcome. And speaking of casters, you know those things casters always say that just gets under your skin? Vent about it here. And last but definitely not least, our favorite caster is hosting a 12 hour broadcast countdown for the release of Starcraft 2, starting July 26. Featuring dozens of famous cameos and chock full of fun events, it's the one thing you're not going to want to miss this week. More information here.

With or without the headphones, he's back in business.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Kennigit/WeeklyRoundUp/BLIZZARD.png)
All is quiet on the western front as Blizzard is yet again working diligently behind the scenes to make sure SC2 runs as smoothly as possible. The last patch of the beta reverted a few minor tweaks, as they wrapped up their testing and data collection in phase two. But even though the beta is (almost) over, Blizzard's still got their work cut out for them. At the moment, they're riding on some of the highest hopes ever. The whole world has their eyes set on them, just waiting to see if they can remake perfection. Just like they did twelve years ago.

iNc: I have been a competitive SC gamer for the entirety of my gaming career. Starting with 88 and then ToT. Throughout my career I have won a lot, lost a lot and everything in between! I am happy to be here as a entrepreneur of the eSport world and someone excited about the future.
TL: And you do coaching as well. How's that going?
iNc: It is going really well. I know it is a rather polarizing subject being as how I do not coach for free. That said I have received tremendous community support and all of my students have been happy! What more can I ask for? We have a camp coming up with plans for a second and even a special third! I am absolutely thrilled to be leading a camp for the game I love and I cannot wait to see where it takes us!

TL: So tell us a bit about yourself.
iNc: I have been a competitive SC gamer for the entirety of my gaming career.
TL: Do you have any top pupils that you want to brag about? Or any other up and coming players we might not know about?
iNc: Well I was lucky enough to coach a few up and comers in BW and they have launched into SC2 with a tremendous pool of ability. Of course Qxc being the most famous but there are others like Raymond who is going by Stew at the moment. Certainly look to see more as time goes along
TL: So I bet lots of TLers are curious about how it feels to become a banling. Any thoughts?
iNc: Sure. With the tremendous increase to TL's poster community and SC in general it has become necessary to have more people "policing" and in general helping the masses become productive members. For me, this was something I have been lucky enough to called to and happy to take on! I love this community and I want to help however I can. If taking on a moderation role is that calling I am happy to answer. I look to improve the forums and hopefully lead by example.
TL: Are there any particular things in sc2 that you really like? Like major improvements over BW?
iNc: Well, I am most thrilled by the breath of life the community has enjoyed. Fresh blood, new attention and lots of exciting growth! The game itself is gorgeous, fluid and pretty dang fast. I feel like it has a lot of evolution yet to occur and that in and of itself excites me. I love the cinema of this game and the overall aesthetic. Should be a great game for those competing and those watching alike.
TL: What about favorite new units? As well as units you miss?
iNc: I love the immortal. Supreme bad ass that just shrugs off earth shattering siege tank shells and such. I like the micro/style of the Colossus. I love the shock and power of the void ray. As for what I miss the Lurker cannot be replaced. Such a cool unit that literally changed the game. Also the muta micro ... is lacking. The muta in Sc2 doesn't function in the same way or require anywhere near the same skill. It is safe to say that unit is missing. Sad panda
TL: What about fun strats that you like? Or strats that really annoy you?
iNc: I really like the continuity strategies where you start moving in the middle and just add more units/tech etc... I love how challenging that is to control effectively yet rewarding if you master it. Things that annoy me are baneling busts, all-in ling or something of that nature. Of course they are a part of the game but that doesn't mean I have to like it
TL: Continuity strategies?
iNc: Like fast expanding, starting a "ball" of protoss units and then rallying/reinforcing/upgrading/teching etc etc.. all while scouting/attacking/positioning. I like the flow of that
TL: Oh, okay. By the way, since you're Protoss, do you think there are any changes that need to be made to the race before release?
iNc: Yes. Protoss is somehow lacking in the PvZ matchup. There is also a window of time where P still has gateway units and a terran can get stim/upgrade marauder with mass rine and just run you over. It is too fast for colossus and too fast for storm. P NEEDS AoE units to deal with T bio but often has to go way down the tech line to get there. Additionally it feels like one mistake in pvz and you are toast ... which is fine ... also it is early so I am sure things will change but I feel like P plays from their heels a lot and that will eventually corrode the numbers against P players. Which is fine, I always like a challenge.
Fear not sons of Aiur, I will figure something out!
TL: Haha, a complete conversion. Oh how I miss the days when you were Zerg.
iNc: Haha well think of it as a reverse kerrigan.
This way I can bring my ultra aggressive/swarmy style to the P race and hopefully standout as a unique player!
TL: Haha. By the way, what do you think of other top players? Like, who would you say is the best of each race so far?
iNc: Tester is the undisputed top P. Then there is people like Spunky and WhiteRa who are of that calibre. Then a long ways down and there are the others like Huk, TT1, iNkA, myself and so on.. I know I am not naming a bunch but the point stands! For T it is the couple koreans like Maka etc. Then there are Cauthon, Qxc, Lz, Strelok, Demuslim and so on. Zerg is a lot more competitive imo ... lots of great players. Obviously the koreans and then IdrA, Sen, F91, Sheth, Machine, Slush, etc etc. Frankly I have to admit the koreans are ahead but not by NEARLY as much as they were in bw. And I don't think that disparity will necessarily grow with time. As long as the western interest in SC2 remains/grows we will be up there with them. Europe, America and the rest.
TL: Glad to hear that. Ok one last question before we wrap up: on earth did you get so buff? Like how much do you work out each week? And is there anyone on TL that you think could beat you up?
iNc: Haha! Well ... I have always been a really competitive person. I did everything with as much drive as I could. I was captain of the chess team, football team and debate team in high school. Not because "I'm so amazing" cause I'm really not ... just because I wanted it, more than others. That same thing applies in the gym. I train every day (unless the day is absolutely Sc2 packed), I consume as much protein as my body will allow and then I repeat! Aside from that I am genetically made for lifting. My arms aren't particularly long and I have strong joints, good tendons and in general a good muscle mass to work with. That all equates to good lifting! I am going to be lifting in AZ so maybe a video is in store Who could beat me up? Hmm.. none comes to mind. There are some big dudes I am sure who would nominate themselves! That said I will wrestle anyone at WCG USA finals and world finals ... contact me!
TL: Sounds like a challenge! Any last words before you go?
iNc: Thanks for interviewing me! I am looking to do more casting (I love it) and I in general, want to help/be more apart of the community. If anyone is in need of q's about forum posting, getting involved, running tourneys etc etc ... please use me as a resource! I have been told countless times this community is really hard to break into ... let me help!
TL: I suppose that's the cue to spam your TL inbox with SC2 PMs. Well everyone, be on the lookout for iNcontroL, your next big SC2 caster. Don't forget to check out his team, Team EG, as well as GosuCoaching.com if you're looking for a quality coach. Also, don't forget to check out nerdstomper.com, proud partner of our beloved bear. Down the Rabbit Hole:
Blizzard's Report Card
By Pokebunny
Blizzard's Report Card
By Pokebunny
With beta coming to a close and the release of StarCraft 2 imminent, what was once a must-buy-release-day game has now made a few gamers a bit unsure about their plans for release day. Although I still have a preorder set for the 27th of July, the experience of the past few months has still made me reconsider whether or not I feel the game is ready for launch. The one thing that really irked me that I haven't seen come up too much was Blizzard's initial attitude towards SC2. They always told us that we'd have more info and beta "when it's ready", but the product we got at the beginning of beta was clearly unfinished. With many features promised post-release, Blizzard has fallen back on the plans for a release-day hit, instead aiming for long-term popularity. This week, I examined the quality of SC2 as far as a market-ready game goes in a few categories.
Multiplayer Gaming/Balance: By far the most relevant concern for the teamliquid netizens, the success of StarCraft:Brood War hinged on its near perfect balance and action packed high level games. Overall, I think Blizzard has done a respectable job with this end of SC2, and that's what has pleased the competitive community thus far. The major criticisms include a lack of micro and unit diversity, which are quite common at the highest levels - a sure sign that the game is deeper than it first appears. With Blizzard obviously paying attention to demands of the fans in this category, I think it's safe to say that the competitive game is ready for release. The game is more balanced than any game has or will be for a long time at release, and that is a very good sign.
Grade: A-
Single Player/vs AI: While we haven't been exposed to this as much in beta, the casual community will surely appreciate Blizzard's efforts in this area. With a far more interesting AI opponent than ten years ago and potentially the best RTS campaign ever, Blizzard is set to make a huge splash in every part of the gaming market. From what we've seen in the TL visits to Blizzard HQ, BlizzCon, and our own experiences, Blizzard appears to have spent much of their time developing the campaign and single player experience. There is no way that this can disappoint, and I think many of us will be surprised to find ourselves enthralled with the single player story shortly after release.
Grade: A
Battle.net: This has been discussed so much already that I'll keep it as short as possible. Blizzard has failed. They were given possibly the easiest task of making game of the year, century, millennium material and they somehow messed up. The lack of crossrealm play, chat rooms, and LAN are something that even a casual gamer will recognize. I've seen casual gamers go "hey, how do you chat in this game?" or "hey, how do I play with my friend? I don't see him online". These factors will really damage the launch popularity of the game, and every second these things are missing is another second of pain.
Grade: C
Spectator Value: The final important thing especially for the longevity of SC2. Spectator value is what keeps people interested in the game, when they see someone make a nice play and go "damn, I wish I could do that". As is, SC2 is exciting, but fairly shallow. Although we try day after day to decipher the little things that made BW great, we can't seem to make it quite as interesting. While blob on blob with a few shiny spells is interesting for a while, it's gonna take a bit more than that to keep it exciting in the long run, and I sincerely hope that we aren't gonna hit the end of spectator value development any time soon.
Grade: B
Few articles and threads have the distinct honor of moving Blizzard's stone hearts (and for good reason)! But this one is different. Almost single-handedly ushering in a new wave of defensive style play with the revolutionary "Static Defense" patch number 7, this revolutionary article takes a look at fundamental design concepts such as the proverbial "defender's advantage" and how it affects the state of the game.
Thread of the Week:
[G] How to Improve
[G] How to Improve
Though not specifically catered to SC2, Ver's 30 page masterpiece should definitely be at the very top of the to-read list for any aspiring RTS player. Newcomers get the benefit of having the absolute fundamentals laid bare for them, telling them step-by-step the tips, tricks, and routines that every single successful player used to reach the top. On top of that, there are many lessons for advanced players to take away as well. A single hour is all you need to completely change the way you view the game and prepare your mindset to shoot up the ladder in no time.

Creativity: 5 (The remake of an old classic. The newfound flexibility the improved editor allows is really great, though.)
Smoothness: 10 (You'll get a unit bugging out here and there, but nothing big enough to make it anything other than perfect.)
But don't take my word for it. Let the masses decide!
