The thing with EU IV is that you have to enjoy conquering and going on massive sprees of wars or you will get run over by the AI eventually. In contrast to CK2 it just feels like a "shallow" (as by paradox strategy game standards) map painter. There is way less to do about internal factors and much more focus on diplomacy and warfare to eventually become a dominant power.
If you enjoy challenging starts there is plenty of countries to go with and as a historical sandbox simulator it is still the best for the timeframe but as I said I stopped playing it once they went overboard with trying to "fix" exploits/tricks players could use against the AI, which to me is just plain stupid since EU4 is still mostly a Singleplayer game.
I think I went off the rails with the whine there so let me just go back to the original question:
EU4 is a good game for a reduced price it is surely worth giving it a shot since you enjoy CK2 (which I only play modded since I can't stand vanilla in certain aspects). Main difference of the EU franchise to the CK one is a much stronger focus on warfare and eventually conquering large parts of the world. If your enjoyment of CK2 stems mainly from the storylines/roleplaying you get and the character focus EU4 might not be for you since you are playing a country throughout the early modern era, but it is a good historical sandbox game.
edit: learning curve is quite a bit higher than CK2 btw but not as insane as Victoria or Hearts of Iron
I played CK2 a TON when I still had time on my hands (loved it). Which might be the case again for a little while. If you think mods really improve the experience - can you name some good ones? I don't have many of the dlcs though...
Do you like Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire? If yes give the mod for CK2 a try it is quite well done from the last time I played it. I am mainly playing Ck2plus, which is a huge overhaul fixing a lot of issues of vanilla and expanding on the features of it quite a bit. It does make the game a bit more challenging as well and adds a lot of historical things which really should have made it into vanilla. Just a couple of examples: - A united Christendom in the earlier start dates which depending on actions you can take might result in the schism later down the route or you can keep it united - much improved flavor and gameplay for heresies - new faction system - cadet branches - coronations - reworked decadence for muslims - event chain for the transition of Carolingian Empire to Holy Roman Empire
And lots more including tons of small fixes etc which make the gameplay much more enjoyable. Overall if you are looking for a fresh experience while still having the vanilla framework as a foundation to work with Ck2plus is the mod you are looking for :D
oh man, and here I am drooling! is this a mod to be used with dlcs or put onto vanilla ck2? I haven't used any custom mods
as far as I know you can use it without dlc but then obviously you are unable to play muslim/indian etc corresponding to the DLC in question. For installation and usage it is rather simple. Download the .zip from their subforum on paradoxplaza (Link: Here), extract it into the C:/My Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings 2/Mod directory and you are good to go. In the launcher you just leave all the dlc on(ticked) and you go into the tab "Mods". Ck2Plus should show up there and then tick the checkbox if it is not already, hit play and congratz you are now playing superior CK2 :D

I tried the GoT mod once. Encountered quite a few weird bugs and this one huge realm scenario is just not really what I am looking for.

As for me, Path of Exile has been addicting lately though....IDK why.
Eh kinda totally missed this. xD
Yeah, I like EU IV a lot, but it is a quite different beast from CK 2. Basically EU IV is risk on steroids with a ton of added layers in complexity.
Not sure how I feel about the latest addon, that was released last week, Mare Nostrum. Like the new mechanics are nice in theory, but in reality the numbers feel way off. Also a bunch of tooltips shows incorrect information.
They try to add stuff one can manage during peace time, but why aren't you at war in the first place. xD
Def. not a game for everyone though. Very complex / steep learning curve, takes tons of time and I am not sure everyone enjoys painting the map in the colour of their chosen nation and / or likes to hunt for crazy achievements.
Town tried to hang me to death when I came out of Kush's room I said "It aint what you think man we was just watchin cartoons!" The mob aint tryin to hear it, so I guess in the spirit of the fear I ripped off both his ears Now he can't hear, town's all near AND he's queer! I guess we should probably get the doctor over here!
