So I do play LoL, but I watch SC2 quite a bit more than LoL, and I have a question:

Every time I turn on a LoL stream (maybe once or twice a week, and I also watched parts of this tournament) it seems like games are ridiculously 1-sided and, as a result, quite boring. Is this just a "thing" in LoL? That teams will get a big advantage early and come backs are really hard to come by? Are there just a lot of mis-matches lately? Is it something else? Because it seems like out of every dozen games I watch, there is maybe one that is anywhere near close, with the rest being 1-sided affairs that see one team have 10+ more kills than the other.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

there's a natural snowball mechanism to league that makes the kill score more often lopsided than even. but it's teh same for starcraft. you don't get to a situation with the map mined out and players fighting with small armies that often.

The finals were boring. Stop including race when what matters is quality of games. LCS are the same, if the games are boring, sometimes, there are next to no cheers.

Explain how much cheers Fnatic got for second place being 3-0'd then?

Exactly my point. Even if the enemy team wrecks your favourite team. Give credit where credit is due.
Btw I never mentioned race.

Usually it's a combo of both. Good teams get early lead. And then continue getting more of lead cuz they're better team, and helped by lead.

Usually when a good team gets behind they know how to turn game around. S3 c9 was like this.

I knew this would happen, I predicted the result.

I'm just thinking, this must be crushing for a lot of the LCS players to see. It's not even the best korean team and they absolutely destroy everyone without losing even once. Not a single game. What can they even do? "Try to practice harder"?

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the NA/EU scene are just concerned with winning there regional LCS and not caring about having 0 chance at worlds/allstars.

Fnatic put up a good fight in games 1 and 2. Gambit had a fighting chance, too. C9 seems to be on the level of Fnatic. All three teams aren't lightyears away of beating KTB. KTB outpicked both Gambit and Fnatic. The individual skills are close.

That said: Fnatic is still in a slump and the meta is very unfavourable for their prefered playstyle. Sure they played better at day 2 and 3 than they played at day 1 and in the LCS but they still have a lot of issues that they weren't able to work on like lategame managing which proved to be the difference against KTB.
C9 might be only the 2nd best team in NA. TSM could have won the tournament, maybe.
Sure KTB might not be a top 5 team in Korea. But they might make another deep run in Champions and prove to be a toptier team.

The skill gap isn't as huge as I have feared but it exists. I'm hopeful for NA because CLG, C9 and TSM are improving steadily. I'm worried for EU though as the scene seems to very stagnant. Fnatic and Gambit can still take games from Korean teams on good days.

Today wasn't much different than pitting a Korean SC2 player up against a non top tier western player, the only western team that seems to be capable of giving Korean teams a good match is Gambit, and thats exactly what we got yesterday, you just tuned in at a poor time. (west vs. west like c9 vs fnatic also provided a good series)

(korea vs. Korea can be good too, unless skt K is involved, so I"m curious as to what games you are watching.)

Haha no dude, have you ever checked TSM's record against korean teams?

TSM's forte has always been winning in the NA region.

c9 has a positive record against TSM and is still better even though c9 might be #2 on the ranking currently, imo. They have some weak spots definitely and bjergerking is prolly better than hai.

I don't think TSM would've done as well as c9 did at the tournament. c9 got quite far, after all.

Because the format isn't winner takes all lol

League had 150k total, but it was split amongst all teams. SC2 was winner take all for 100k.l

pretty good if you ask me, in OGN they play 2-3months for 80k so 60 for 1 weekend is pretty good. Sc2 was a one time thing to create hype, usually iem pays winners about 30-40k in sc2 iirc.l

pretty sure I'm responding to a troll post, but SC2 scene is likely spending beyond their means and running on fumes.l

Idk I thought that LoL was much more popular and develloped than starcraft but seeing today how they only got 4 times the viewers (I thought they had millions) I also assumed they made more money, even if LoL was also a winner take all format, the winning team would make much less money because they have to share the prizepool :x

Million+ viewers usually only happen for All Stars/World Championship. IEM is only streamed on twitch, which alienates the audience since I hear a ton of people rarely if ever can get twitch to work.

so what's the prizepool on allstars/ World championship?

that's pretty dubious, the teams that didn't make it to saturday were pretty heavy underdogs and I'd be surprised if TSM wouldn't have had the exact same result at a minimum (not beating KTB lol, but I think they match up better vs. Fnatic than c9 does because of how bad soaz played at the tournament.)

That's pretty insulting to LCS players (he was talking about LCS players, not just NA players) to assume that they stopped trying at the end of season 2. I don't think it's fair to apply your sensibilities to people who have actually experienced pro gaming success at a high level, those guys are EXTREMLY competitive, thats why they're good at the game and why they are on pro teams. If they truly didn't think they had any realistic shot at ever beating koreans they would probably just retire/become full time streamers.
Also, KTB is one of the best teams in Korea, i'm tired of people saying theyre "not even the best team in korea" they are one of the top 3 or 4 teams from KR, a region where the skill gap between teams is MUCH smaller compared to a region like NA where the top teams are WAY way better than the bottom teams. After watching this IEM and comparing it to the matches at World's, even though Fnatic lost 3-0 to KTB, it seems like the LCS teams are closing the gap to the Koreans, very slowly but surely. The LCS teams have likely surpassed the chinese/SEA teams (for the time being) and the gap between the top EU and NA teams is almost negligible at this point.
