Debating on picking up an AP top but I don't want to drop the IP on the glyph set if he's gonna be poop and be most of my way to somebody like Rumble. If that goes through as is. he'll be weak to the early all in champions but still good against the standard pro style top lanes of mundo/maokai ect. probably forced to lane swap vs rumble as he almost always does now anyway. you could still be successful in solo queue with him, but you'll have to learn how to play defensive and not try for risky cs early vs some of the strong lane champs. Good. When a champion is as strong as he is late game, his early game should suffer to make up for it. the biggest increase in strength ryze had is the movement away from ignite top to teleport, and the jungler stop being a top babysitter and focusing on mid an bot more.

Ryze is tricky to balance because he is tanky and hurts a lot early and mid game, but his tankiness comes entirely from items so it can't be nerfed without side-effects. People really overestimate his late-game damage, after you get your big three items (Tear, Rod, FH), there's no more damage so you really flatline.
I'm fine with nerfs to his level 1-2-3 Q damage but taking 40 damage off a skill you're going to cast 10 times in a fight is a huge nerf.

Ryze might require a rework of some sort. Straight numerical nerf will probably just Olaf him without achieving anything else.

Does he need a rework? Or do people need to remember how to absolutely shit on him?
And I hate to say it (no I don't) but Malzahar absolutely shuts Ryze out of late-game. I never ban him if I'm going mid.

Void isn't core. It's a good pickup but certainly not something you'll build every game.

4/20 games have Void, vs 20/20 where people built Tear+Rod+Glacial/FH.

I dunno, number changes are fine, but to hurt his lategame along with his early game seems a bit overkill. It's also a bit silly to be doing these changes considering how close new season is.
@alz, makes sense, most of those games ended when they only had 4 or 3 core items.

Yea I don't really understand them keeping the lower ranks similiar while gutting the higher ranks. Sounds like more of a mid-late game nerf than early game honestly. Don't like it at all.

IMO Ryze's toplane popularity is (in part) due to how minions work in the sidelanes right now. Which is, to put it mildly, poorly.

How do you mean? I've barely touched any of the side lanes since my return.

The minion block issue continues to exist, but also they dont always drop aggro in a predictable fashion (particularly harmful for melee champions), so if you are against Ryze he gets to trade for free earlygame. Basically your option is to be ranged (and what ranged champion is going to punish/outscale/etc ryze when TP is basically mandatory?), be a good Irelia, or just be a herbivore (which Ryze is perfectly happy with).

I'm happy that Ryze is no longer both a lane bully and a late-game scaling monster, but I do think he's very close to being Olafed with small nerfs. He's not an inherently tanky character; it just so happens that items that give mana give tankiness too. He's squishy in lane and if he's behind he's basically useless.

It's a little more than that -- Ryze can harass you with Q constantly which doesn't draw minion aggro, and his W is very strong 1v1 as a disengage. He suffers greatly when he can't self-peel with W (see, e.g., Aatrox / Jarvan IV).
