Long and short of it: don't. Champs hit their power spike too fast and you don't have enough resistances to survive the first couple team fights. SV being a required buy on him also hurts, as you can't get an armor item and it in that early 15-20 minute time frame. If they gave back the tenacity on his ult, or buffed his base armor + MR, then maybe, but right now he's terrible.

Tanky, can harass, guaranteed engage (way more reliable than leona's or thresh), support type of ultimate (not worse than leona or thresh's), no mana issues.

Q is actually pretty short ranged as far as harass skills go.

I've played against Zac support like 3-4 days ago, I was playing Braum support, that Zac got literally rekt hard. He was trying to engage with E from their turret (when our lane was pushed) and he was always ending up being bursted to death.

I think maokai support is very viable, no need for you to do anything, its just that there are too many good picks at the support line now and since maokai was perceived as a jungle or smth, people don\t play it as support. However, nowadays Maokai support is the only thing he can do well

He's still pretty mana-hungry so with the current heal meta and the fights that tend to extend, the long cooldown on his ult (compared to Anivia) doesn't let him reposition during a single engagement and even if you get a good one off it's going to drain your mana fast (I guess since you're playing support you can get a crucible or something for mana regen but it'll only buy you so many seconds). His dps also isn't that high compared to someone like Thresh, Braum or any AP support (I often see Thresh outperform tanky/initiating junglers in terms of damage to champions when games go late because of The Box's really high base damage: if he manages to hit level 16, it's easily 1500 damage per teamfight pre-MR just from it... then you factor in his passive's AP and his E's passive). It'd also force you into an aggressive lane that wants all-in, since your poke likely won't stick, and you can't even peel a Leona or Thresh that wall (Q's knock-up radius is really short to be able to interrupt a dash). At least he can shove better than other melee supports. Would you play him Talisman for the initiation/disengage, or Face for tankiness and better protection of your carries?

I'm not a fan. Was this recently? What was the enemy support? I'm considering opening with Spellthief's Edge and poke/push to level 2 like you would Morgana. Like with any Support, there are certain Support matchups you'd want to avoid. Right off the bat, I think of Sona with better poke and sustain in lane, there's very little you can do if 1-2 of you get caught by Crescendo in lane. Any other glaringly weak matchups? Leona? Thresh? Spellthief into Talisman imo. Chalice/Crucible as first or second major item because it helps with the mana issues with ulti. Other than that, I'm leaning more towards tanky over AP.
