Brand's interview implies that he knows about the League's hidden agenda, although Riot didn't really try hard with this one (I like to think it's tied to his guinea pig status for them tho). There's a ton of stuff like that, and aside from the "scientific" goals (with restraints put on magic usage since the Rune Wars, the League is the best excuse for studying nexuses of power in plain view for current Xerath-wannabes) there is the fact that the Institute of War holds a lot more influence as it entices City-States to pressure each other into enlisting. Arbitrating a dispute between Noxus and Demacia is one thing, progressively establishing oneself as the go-to arbitrator for every single inter-state dispute while being "trusted" by each side to be neutral makes you the indirect ruler of the continent. But if Riot tries to delete the Institute by ceasing to reference it (and basically keep it alive) then there's only the League left, as "that place where champions gather". Which saddens me a bit, but oh well. Thing is, Kalamanda's format makes it great to follow while it's ongoing, but there's no ingame impact and after it's over there's only written material for people who'd like to know about it. With stuff like the Freljord event, there's a bunch of ingame easter eggs and stuff (like the 3 sisters' quest, the shopkeepers, Lissandra's speech once you win an ARAM, etc.) to make players feel involved, or give "easier" access to the lore (by delivering it/spoon-feeding it to players rather than make it accessible for whoever wants to make the effort themselves—yes, this sounds elitist, I know). Supposedly once it ends you can more easily show the repercussions to players too. But then again, Riot has said that the Freljord's war is supposed to be over, but they'll never be able to give it durable effects because the champions still have to be in the game, the factions still have to exist, and they didn't remove the 3 sisters' quest either. So officially, with how they work and stuff, the war's over, the story has moved on. Yay! But we don't have the faintest damned clue about what happened after its launch, who won, was Lissandra's cover blown, to which extent were the losers hurt, etc. I personally don't see how it's a better way to serve lore and stuff and bring it to the players, but eh. Whatever.

There are no sunbathing Lee Sins in 1984. You must be trolling if you actually believe Riot wants a dystopian environment. It is literally anathema to Riot Games' model. But all those Battlecast skins are so gloomy and serious, and awesome!

Overall the art direction has been more and more "serious" with the alternate art being far more bright. See Justicar skins being non standard. and even Leona's splash art, theoretically someone who should have the brightest and most cheery art, she's turning away from the sun hidden in a cloud filled sky with a very serious look on her face. Then if you look at even Trundle, who turned from a paragon savior of his clan by taking on the entire burden himself, to a war monger.

Wow, too deep for me. Seriously though, some of the "serious" skins, are pretty fucking sweet. Arc Light Varus was simply awesome.

How is making her face not look retarded and actually psychotic looking a radically different game-changing ingame art change?

I thought you meant her overall model different from standard. just the face shouldn't change much, but even psychopaths have normal faces unless they have a reason otherwise (like the joker or shaco)

Then if you look at even Trundle, who turned from a paragon savior of his clan by taking on the entire burden himself, to a war monger. People. Just. Read. The. Damn. Trundle. Judgement. Dammit. Once and for all. (TL;DR: Trundle comes to the League, they tell him "We already have a cure: the curse merged with your tribe's regeneration and losing one means losing both, so they'll die from AIDS unless we revert the ritual to heal you while giving them both back", Trundle thinks he could become a loved hero of his people, remembers he thought that the first time before he accepted the ritual and became even more an outcast after than before, decides to teach the tribe a lesson by dooming them to AIDS, and joins the League because sharing his mind with summoners and being accepted there is the cure to his "true" disease: living alone and shunned.) He fucking condemned his whole tribe to die over the next few generations, out of spite for them using him, lying to him and treating him like a pariah. He definitely has his reasons, but he's not a paragon at all. He didn't accept the ritual out of kindness either, he was as much of an ugly duckling to them before as he'd be to us now because his regeneration let him look "normal" (so it was also jealousy on their part on top of that) and he was a runt, so he was being bullied and he hoped to be loved and hailed as a savior and basically revered by all those who despised him previously. And that's what makes him one of League's best-written characters in passing.
