I played casual DotA for about a year back in the early warcraft 3 days, I've watched both internationals and occasionally watch tobi casts.
Having said that I can identify maybe a dozen heroes from their in-game models and have no idea on the vast majority of abilities/items in the game. The colours instead of portraits thing just drives me nuts, I want to know who is where, I don't want to have to go through a player-hero-colour mental link every time I look at the minimap.
My bash on DotA contribution for the day. In all seriousness it is a fun game, just can't really stand playing at the bottom level and don't want to grind my way up.

Why isnt LoL vs Dota one of our GD rules? T.T

Nice LoL and doto convo to wake up to. Thanks to our resident dota2 users for giving us their insight.
In terms of graphics, I just want to say that it's entirely subjective and I really loathe it being brought up as a point whenever the two games are in discussion. I can't follow Dota graphics that well but I know somewhere out there there are gamers who think Lol is too cartoon-y. Everything about look (art) is largely based on opinion.
Happy Saturday all.

Figures who started the big debate. What a lovely newcomer they're turning out to be Because I like to think our TL LoL community is smaller and a bit more mature. I found nothing wrong in the past 2-3 pages about Dota and lol. You?

Because we're not faggots who bash games, but take it to a more constructive discussion. Dota is a good game, LoL is a good game, talking about the differences and similarities seems fine.

I actually really enjoy DotA 2's art style. I can follow it pretty well, especially when compared to the original (but then, anything would seem easy to follow compared to the original).

Happy Saturday all. One thing that I think is not arguable graphics wise, though, is that the relic war3 color system is not accessible to new viewers. Like, in the context of a game with free for all game types and what not, having red/blue/purple/teal/yellow vs. green/orange/grey/dark green/light blue made sense due to the native restrictions of the modded game, but keeping that system in a separate client seems a tactical error in terms of accessibility.
E: I'm pretty sure I screwed up the colors and I played warcraft Dota and Dota1 for a while -- there's a pink in there somewhere

There was one person in all of that (in fact where it originated from) who seemed to be attemping a shitstorm, yeah LoL GD is mature enough to have a conversation and averted it. Nothing wrong with LoL / Dota, i just dislike doing it because sooner or later some "faggot" as sponkz so politely put it, is going to arrive and ruin the party (or in this case be the host T.T). I doubt GD's regulars are the only people browsing this thread and if the wrong people find it then its going to hell ^_^
Either way it wasnt a biggy, i have a specific problem with something else but meh.

Don't worry about dem baddies entering our realm. We have mod staff in place for that.
With TI3 and Worlds coming up so soon, I actually encourage more Dota2 and LoL talk. Note that I didn't mention "vs" because nothing about these two games need to be compared to the point where one game must trump the other someway, somehow.

Obviously taste in graphics is totally subjective, but clarity and ease of understanding thereof is not. I remember Blizzard toned down the death animations in sc2 when the community complained they made fights messy. That's not taste, that's gameplay.

Does anyone here have the problem that Chrome just randomly sets its volume extremely low, almost mute?

I'll give my 2 cents on LoL/dota 2. I personally couldn't get into playing dota as a solo game unlike LoL which why I just play LoL and watch dota 2. Maybe it's because I'm too tryhard but unless I was with my 5 man stack (Whom totally weren't carrying me honest ) I didn't really have much fun. Still dota is an amazing thing to watch.

When cited specifically as an animation issue, then I completely understand and it's valid point to bring up.
I was referring more to people who think Dota2's team fights is a ball of fireworks (something I read all too often, along with LoL being cartoon-y). I think to myself, "pretty sure LoL 5v5s are pretty firework/flashy too... We're just more accustomed to it after several hundred games."

Well it depends what games you have played prior to that. After all those years of WoW/wc3 league doesn't look cartoony to me :D.And then there is sc2 so dota 2 looks pretty decent as well.
If only I had an actual computer instead of a microwave I'd give dota 2 a shot. But 20 fps in laning with lowest setting not too fun xD.Dota 2 is actually a lot uglier than league with lowest settings which is kinda funny.

I've had this problem with Skype mostly. When someone calls, it turns the rest of the sound low, but sometimes it bugs out and does when nobody calls you.

clarity and ease of understanding is also subjective to an extent. LoL is very easy to understand ... to a point where you understand what is going on implicitly (champ A is doing damage to champ B).
On the other hand, due to the way spells are front loaded and a lack of emphasis on positioning at least I've personally found it exceedingly difficult to get to a point where I can clearly everything that happens in a teamfight. Instead I'm having to compartmentalize each champ by their DPS and how effective it is as opposed to individual skills being used. This is a factor of every champion having at least 3 active skills (+summoners) the relatively short cooldowns, lack of "impact" of most spammable skills, and almost no casting animation.
The issue for me is that while I can understand what is happening, its impossible to get into a detail where everything can be understood. Initially it seemed like it could be just a gap in understanding, but after almost 2 years of watching LoL I've come to the conclusion that's just part of the game, since the casters themselves have no idea what exactly is happening after the initiation of teamfights and even during replays they find it difficult to explain exactly. The game basically operates on a champion-basis as opposed to an individual skill/spell basis. I don't know if other people have the same feeling about it or some tips on grasping the minutiae of the game.
In DotA i've gotten to a point where I can more or less see everything that is occurring at once and immediately understand it in a much finer detail than LoL, even though its much harder to get into, I feel like the ability to grasp the game once you know what everything does is better in DotA than in LoL.

Hmmmm Ketera is MIA and I need someone else to play a ranked game for me.... in like the next hour. Anyone? Preferably a regular and I don't care if you win or lose. Gold 5.

But Kupon3ss, that point of 'once you know everything in Dota' can take weeks if not months.
I remember DotA to be so frustrating to try to get into, whether Dota 1 in high school or Dota 2 more recently.
I just find LoL to be more intuitive and fun, I guess.
