I'm currently wondering where Rengar will be played. Jungle or Top are his only options, of course, being melee bruiser. There's a Stonewall video out for pre-release jungle (if you put any credibility on him, I know some people dislike his stuff), and it seems pretty decent. Tank ability + heal and AS steroid are good things to have as a jungler, but his ganks aren't really overwhelming. A ranged slow/snare is good, but no sprint until 6 and no gap closer unless they go through a bush. Also, only 1 AoE ability on a long-ish CD will put him pretty slow clears for the first few levels.

His kit will likely be top, I think. E seems like good harass, W for sustain/survival, and R is an escape or roaming tool. And of course, manaless tops are pretty fucking good for the most part. Harass out with E, use 5 Ferocity on heals, never leave lane.

It actually enables more gameplay choices because you have to choose whether or not the item is going to be "worth it" based on how you're doing in the game, how many kills/deaths/assists you forecast, and if the stats are something you really need.


I don't really see the item as a limitation. By the time you can expect to buy the item you're already getting your money's worth on stats. The normal limitation, that it doesn't build into anything late-game, doesn't really apply to Necklace. By the time you've filled your other item slots Necklace will have transformed into a worthy late-game item.

The question isn't really will Rengar want Necklace, but when. Against a hard lane opponent he might defer it because he's just as likely to die as get kills, but it's too good of an item to avoid entirely.

Also, Rengar is a perfect fit for Azubu's playstyle. Bonetooth Necklace is an ideal item for a low economy game, and Rengar has very obvious roaming/ambush power.

I think he's a much better top laner than a jungler because he trades so abusively and has all sorts of bush shenanigans, but he can be scary either way.

His passive is actually much stronger than you realize for ganking. There's no cooldown, it has very good range, and he can use it to jump to a minion. So just because you aren't within 600 range of the river brush doesn't mean one of your ranged/melee minions isn't, and he can immediately follow up with a ranged slow/1s root. His side brush ganks are even more ridiculous because you go into your side's brush, jump on someone, and then run back into the nearby brush to jump on them again after they flash away.

Then he eventually hits level 6 and doesn't even need the brush to jump on you.

Oh, I wasn't referring to just this rengar deal specifically, this just seems to be a trend on the subforum recently.

I wouldn't call an optional item item "limiting" in any regard. He doesn't have to get it at all, and if he gets to the point that he can take advantage of it (early game lead, good matchup, etc), it's a good option for him. It's flexibility, not necessity.

That said, it may end up just making him the snowball-y-est champ in the game. Rengar gets ahead, there's no stopping him from getting this and turning into a powerhouse. Will make bad players cry.

well when i mentioned limitation i was talking about viktor, not rengar.

Ah, never mind.

It's really only limiting in the late game, though, for Viktor. Early on, yes it limits your options, but it's more efficient than most if not all options at that point, meaning you'd get it if you had a choice anyway. Just my take on the Core.

Agree with everything you said, aside from the champion design standpoint. Overall Riot's champ design has been pretty good as of late, and as far as Rengar goes: I think Rengar's design, look, theme, skills, hell pretty much everything about him is excellent. If you haven't tried him wait 'till you use his ultimate. Easily one of the greatest things 'feel-wise' Riot has put into the game. Terrifying from an opponent standpoint, and from your perspective, YOU GET TO BE THE FUCKING PREDATOR

Don't you love when you instabuy a champion and then the next one that comes out looks like it'll be one you want to play as well? While I'm calling Rengar out for probably being a bit on the strong side, he looks fun as fuck. But now I won't want to spam Diana games when he comes out Better get as many more in as possible.

I really hate the short release timers between champs, but I guess they gotta do it, so people will spend RP on um, and won't have time to farm up the IP for them.

I've noticed this as well. While the champions themselves are interesting to mess around with and think about, the five champions preceding Diana really didn't excite me.

To be fair, though, I only tend to get excited about champions who can jungle competitively.

Riot needs to remake some junglers so that ones who can go gp10 will have some kind of disadvantage vs junglers who need wriggles. Right now aside from shyv, no pro team is running wriggles junglers anymore and for good reason. Either make wriggles junglers the real tanks, or decrease the damage of gp10 junglers.

Or just make farming the jungler more rewarding.

It's not the champions that are the problem, it's that wriggles junglers need farm to be effective and that's just not available ni the jungle since the rework you need to farm lanes unless you literally do nothing but farm.

Well it's not like GP10 junglers clear slower. Decreasing the cost of wriggles would be another option. Pretty much no jungler pro teams run have to face the trade off between damage items vs tank items. GP10 junglers can all go pure tank without worrying about having no damage.

it's just that the main lanes can "require" jungle objectives to stay in touch. if a mid is a bit behind in competitive play, he will take wraiths, if bot is behind, they take golems on blue side, etc. also when you start losing towers, you lose control over your jungle. in both scenarios, jungles with wriggles fall behind because they are not keeping up with farm, even if you had a carry in the jungle, they wouldn't be able to do anything. the one thing they have is objective control to a degree, a quick drag or counter jungle, but again, in tournies etc, everything is a team effort so the "control" isn't really needed.

so at the top levels, jungles became just glorified supports getting gp10s because the main lanes can carry well enough without their help, and when shit hits the fan you don't really need the jungle farm to keep up with the game since you have the gold items. riot already nerfed philo and heart of gold though so apart from nerfing the gold itself, it isn't likely to change any time soon. and even then, they would switch to gp10 runes.

I agree on the champion cycles.

Diana/Zyra were really awesome for me, and I love them both.

Before that the last champion I got really good feels playing was Riven.
