Hello TL LoL, my name is ViZe. My handle is Chthonius and I play on the North American server. I've been lurking here for quite a while and I thought I would formally introduce myself. Anyways, I've been playing League for 5 months or so and I am currently at ~1000-1100 elo. I haven't played the game in a few weeks and I've decided that upon returning I will play with a new focus and try to actually improve my play rather than just play random characters and try to grind elo (I've played ~200 ranked games and I really am not much better than when I started playing ranked).

In order to do this I've decided to play 1-2 characters of each role so I can focus on improving my mechanical skills and game knowledge rather than focusing on learning like 5 or 6 champions for each role just to have fun. I was thinking of playing safer characters that are strong in solo queue and I have fun playing/play well. For each role, I was considering:

Top: Riven, Lee Sin, Nidalee (Either AP or AD), potentially Swain or Vlad.
Mid: Karthus, potentially Swain or Vlad
Jungle: WW, Lee Sin, Udyr
AD Carry: Ashe, Corki
Support: Janna, Soraka

I was thinking of purchasing Swain or Vlad since they are both in general seen as suitable Solo Top and Solo Mid, however I have this fear of buying either of them now since Swain having a recent price reduction and buffs may become pretty popular (I'd rather play less popular champions if I can) and Vlad (at least according to this and other GDs) is always at risk for nerfs. I also kind of fear to play Lee top since he seems like he is now one of the, if not the strongest and most versatile Solo Top characters as well as a super-strong jungle and could potentially be at risk for nerfs.

Prior to this break statistically my strongest champions have been Riven and Karthus with ~65% winrates. I also played Lee Sin and Udyr a lot in the jungle but I have terrible winrates with them (like ~30%), partially because half the time in the jungle I play like an idiot and only want to farm lol. I think my support is relatively good for this level of play.

What do you guys think about this? Are there other characters that you feel are good for this sort of thing? Does all of this trepidation about nerfs and what not make any sense?

Edit:
tl;dr What are some champions that you guys think will be good for me to learn to improve my ELO with a general long-term goal of simply improving my play.

Nevermove is a root, or a snare, not a stun. I see so many people make that mistake. Well, when there's Ryze or Annie or any ranged dps in front of you, be sure that you can tell the difference between the two.

It really doesn't matter which champions you play. The best way to play the game is to maintain a positive attitude (i.e. no raging and support your team) and to focus/tryhard. If you can play a champ of each role you are usually good to go, which it sounds like you are.

There are at least a dozen different champions viable for each role so it really depends on who you like playing.

Same answer as usual:
Play the champs that you feel most comfortable and consistent with. That's by far the most important aspect.

It's impossible to give you good specific recommendations especially because people at lower elos (that includes you, no offense though :p) have wildly different strengths and weaknesses.

Pick the champs that you think you can consisently lane safely with while getting your farm up. You don't need spectacular performance; consistency is most likely going help you way more than a 20-0 game here and there.
Stay away from champs that people generally hate on though (varies depending on region, timezone, and elo), or else you're gonna attract feeders/ragers/flamers and the likes.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

Normally when I say stun for morg/lux/maokai/ryze/swain I mean snare but am too lazy to differentiate between the two in chat. Also, most of the time you would want to snare a dps in the same circumstances you would want to stun them.

Well as a Maokai jungler be sure that I'd love Twisted advance to be a stun, because catching Annie out of position won't amount to much if she can still unload before she dies. Or rooting Graves/Vayne/Kog that still 3-shots on of our carries during the time it takes to bring him/her down.

I don't get proteams. I don't know if they're just lazy or putting on an act on stream. It seems like they'd rather put in 16 hours of shitty practice than 4 hours of real practice. I feel like CLG and TSM legitimately need a babysitter / coach that has the final say, tells them what to do, and settles their dumb arguments.

Or just get rid of Regi, I think he's the main source of alot of their problems(constant stupid mistakes + bad decisions)

Eh it's been said in this thread before but TSM now has a coach.
http://ggchronicle.com/team-solomid-acquires-new-coach/

It's apparently a third Dinh. The coach/bro will address things like the infighting and other things like diet and sleep schedules. So yeah they hired a bro to be a mom, and he looks like the youngest bro from the video/stream shots he has been in.

I gotta point out - this guy's name is Dat Dinh. That's one hell of a name.

wait singed can jungle?

He can, but he's not very good at it. I do it a lot in normals because Singed is so troll to play. You get REALLY low during your first clear and you use a lot of mana in the jungle early on. You end up wanting to get a philo/hog on him, which isn't really optimal. You can't go RoA because of how long it takes to get it with typical jungle farm, even though RoA is such a good item on Singed. With a double GP10 opening you don't do much damage and you aren't very tanky, so you're really pushing his usefulness till late in the game.

I haven't experimented too much with skipping philo on Singed since the sigil change, but I've found the sigil change as a whole to be largely unhelpful so I wouldn't expect it to do much. Next best thing would be getting catalyst and just sitting on it for a veil since you prob won't be able to turn it into RoA in a reasonable amount of time.

Sigils give ~15 mana. It's sort of a drop in the pond in most cases. It helps but a lot of champions won't ever notice.

I got a question: how do people deal with cheesy bot lanes like panth/taric or something like that? I've met them a few times recently and (since soloq) it's almost impossible to avoid giving them a kill and then it snowballs.

Play super passive and don't give them a kill until your harass hurts enough that you can push them out of lane. If your question is "how do I convince people in solo Q not to feed" then I think everyone wants that answer.

I Don't think taric panth is even that strong. Yet its always mentioned as kill bot. Was soraka kogmaw versus trynda rumble once. That was difficult. Or trynda was jarvan. Don't remember

uh, if you don't think taric/panth is a damn strong lane then you havn't played vs any good ones.

Freeze lane in front of tower and ward liberally. Cheese lanes rely heavily on being able to maintain bush control. Gank early. 1-2 kills is enough to be far enough ahead to zone them for the rest of the game. ADs who can blink the stun or are especially durable are good choices.

True, it is a root not stun. Essentially no difference in the context I was talking about (swain top vs melee)

I was wondering, which classes are considered to beat Jax reliably top? I went against him with Yorick for the first time today and while I did fine the first few levels soon after he just started raping me and I couldn't find anything to do about it, something that very rarely happens to me on Yorick. So who do you take when you see a Jax pick for top?
I'm a man of my word, and that word is "unreliable".

mundo, skarner, warwick, shyvana, teemo, swain, vlad, sion, yorick, irelia, voibear, wukong, xin zhao, garen, panth...
any champ that deals damage through skills or auto-attacks should be fine against jax. he's hard to kill without a hard stun because of his leap, but no way should he be bullying anyone in lane

i think literally the only champ i wouldn't take against him is fiora, maybe trynd. maybe trundle?

How do you improve as a team? My friends and I are in a high school only tournament and we intend to win it, but we can't seem to improve. Every game we've won so far has just been one person carrying the team.

We've tried playing a bunch of ranked games together, but it's the same. We either win because one person gets extremely fed and destroys them, or we lose because we lost more lanes than we won.

I'm also curious about some team comps. For a poke comp, what are some good champions for the top laner and jungler to play? We could only think of mid + bot champs for this. Actually, what are some good team comps in general?

tldr; 1) How do you improve as a team?
2) What are some good team comps?

Well, there are some things you need to look at.

Are your lanes keeping up/winning in cs? How is your map/buff control? How often are ganks successful, and if they are, what made them so?

These are just a few of the considerations for a team. Without seeing your team's play first hand, it's hard to really give you a clear direction.

One of the biggest things is being able to recognize and acknowledge your mistakes. Once you do that, you can then figure out a course of action to fix them. Try not to get ragey. But if it does happen, try to put it aside until after the game, and then discuss it once you've cooled off.

Having the same issues as you guys and just playing/talking A LOT slowly makes you play better. This game is mostly about coordination as a team so unless you win all 3 lanes it's more important than individual skill. You could try having 1 person do all the calls but might not work at first.

Depends on what level you play.If you aren't playing on a top level I'd recommend some AOE compositions since they are pretty straight forward- PRESS R AND RUN AT THEM( /RUN AT THEM AND PRESS R).Otherwise you should watch some pro games and get a general idea.

And yeah I agree with the guy above DON'T rage/blame others and ask others what they think because very often you may not see your mistakes.

Communicate. At least half of everything that goes horribly, horribly wrong in TL B's games is a failure to communicate an intention or lack thereof, or just a really bad miscommunication. Stuff like people going back without asking first/saying anything, people running off to farm a lane without saying a word, everyone wordlessly doing their own thing when we should be doing something, miscommunication on a gank attempt, misinterpretation of "be ready for dragon". Communication is really the key to a strong team.

Beyond the standard team compositions, there's:
  • Poke Comp: Crush the opponent using superior poke and disengagement. Uses champions like Nidalee and Kog'maw for poke, and champions like Heimerdinger and Trundle for disengage. You need both poke and disengage in excess for it to work.
  • Protect/Buff the Carry Comp: Crush the opponent by having a ridiculously buffed and unkillable carry, usually Kog'maw, Tristana or Vayne. Every other champion in the game buffs and/or protects the carry in one way or another. Typical champions include Warwick, Nunu, Janna, Lulu, Galio, Gangplank and Nidalee.
  • AoE Comp: Pretty much everyone knows this one. Grab lots of champions with strong AoE abilities, smush the enemy team in tight spaces. Any champion with a "Press R to Win" ultimate qualifies. Works best when you clear Baron wards and then bait the enemy team into rushing through the tight corridors of the jungle, directly into ult after devastating ult.
  • Double WotA: Any composition which uses two strong AP champions each building WotA. Sometimes uses a non-carry AP for the second WotA. As long as your APs don't get gibbed you can pretty much win any team fight through pure sustain, then when the enemy team builds MR to compensate your AD carry murders them for their conceit.
  • Jungle Control: Something of a counterpick comp, and requires a lot of coordination and forethought. Top and mid champions have to be strong pushers, preferably mobile ones. Jungler should absolutely be mobile and/or a strong duelist. Ward the enemy jungle so you know where the jungler is, then top/mid/jungle collapses on them. Because the lanes are pushed you don't lose much for doing so, while the enemy team has to leave CS on the table constantly. With the enemy jungler on the ropes your team can be very aggressive while the enemy team has to play conservatively and give up objectives and farm. Use this to punish picks like Ryze and Irelia (poor pushers). Doesn't work so well against champions that can push back.

Thanks for all the answers, I really appreciate it. I'll talk to my team about everything and hopefully we can become a stronger team.

Also, what are some good top champions? The only tops our player can use at the moment are Irelia, Warwick, Rumble, Wu Kong and GP.
