While this thread is labeled "DotA2", this is in fact a community thread first. Many of the users in the TL LoL subforum have been playing as friends for over a year now, so it makes logical sense that they would want to play other games together. Do not compare DotA2 to LoL, you will get banned. TL LoL veterans know what is expected. Newcomers be warned. gl hf

How do you draft? I have no idea and I'm terrified of getting captain position. Also apparently I'm above 90th percentile according to MMR which makes me think that people are just really bad at this game. Especially considering some of the builds I still see.

For soloQ CD/CM I'd worry about picking 'strongest available' type drafts with some consideration to a strategy. You don't have to be Puppey to know that stuns and cc are strong, that 3 melee tri-lanes suck, a tri-core of 3 do-nothing-early carries is awful, etc. Draft a lineup with any cohesion at all and most people shouldn't complain about it. You could also just keep queueing All Pick as it's by far the most popular queue as is, and watch drafts of competitive games until you are comfortable doing it yourself(you can use old pick/ban data to kind of theorycraft yourself as well, what were the captains thinking when they made those picks and whatnot). Yango could have a lot to say about this, but maybe not, because there's not exactly a magical guide to drafting.

Especially considering some of the builds I still see. 90th percentile is basically Gold in LoL. Pub drafting just kind of sucks in general because you have no idea what people can actually play properly. For pub teammates in particular you generally want to draft straightforward fighting heroes that still can maintain usefulness even if they are underfarmed or losing. Stuff like AM Spec Void are a big no-no, and even PL is a risk because most pubs will still farm too hard. Heroes like Furion and Doom can be good if you're playing them but are a big risk to hand to pub teammates. Stuff that's hard to play or does really poorly from behind like SF and QoP should be avoided. If you're playing with a stack this is different, but with unknowns you just generally want to stick to safe shit that can fight really well CM, Lina, Naix, etc.

I watch a lot of competitive so I kinda get the feeling of drafts but I also think there's all these mental mind games where people get baited into certain picks and then countered. I was wondering if there were any common traps like that. Or if that triangle of push/split/teamfight is still viable. Or even things like what makes a strong lane. The other day in one game, people got all pissy about the draft and in the end it became a Huskar/Abaddon/CM vs Lich/Luna and we just got dove over and over at Level 5, leading me to think that Lich/Luna has no lane synergy. There is the possibility that I'm just overthinking things and that it's pub so I should just play whatever.

Lich Luna doesn't have lane synergy, you're correct. Lich is a strong *offensive* support (denies creeps, low CD spammable nuke to harass with). But he has very little defensive power, since he is squishy and easy to kill himself and has no hard disables or defensive spells (Frost Armor is not that strong in lane). Therefore, he's generally best paired with laners that have naturally good defensive ability themselves. Luna's defensive ability is quite poor. She has a long-range nuke and a +damage aura, but poor creep clear early game, is squishy, and has no disables. Lich is generally better at 2vX off-lane rather than 2vX safe-lane, when paired with defensively strong off-laners like Windrunner or Dark Seer. Safe lane Lich is in general a waste because the deny is less impactful on a lane where you should already have lane control. Support Lich should generally be used as either dual mid/off-lane or an aggressive trilane.
