Sapling isn't instant damage, it's split between the land and then the time between it aquiring a target. Sapling is the majority of his damage, and his q and w require him to be in melee range, a bad place for any ap to be. | ||

During lane/teamfight you want to hit E a) right on top of AD/APs, so they have to reposition themselves to your advantage or take it (that's your poke). b) within range of your W, so you can instantly W on top of them while your E is in flight. Once you get it down it's just slightly harder to hit than Brands W for example. Also you seem to have the concept of him being "melee AP". He's not. He's a tanky bruiser if you run him from the jungle. All that stuff like RoA/Triforce needs are some resists (Aegis!!) and he instantly gets beefy enough to punish people being out of position. What makes Maokai such a beast is his flexibility. Someone diving mah carry? NP, I'm with you bro. Someone horribly out of position? NP, I got him bro. Add that with strong poke, that ult and being a fucking tree in your face, he just wins. <3 mah tree PS: If you build him like an AP carry (RoA -> Deathcap) every one of your damn saplings has to hit and you're peeling for your AD all day. Between your passive, your ult and your CC he's still probably one of the beefiest APs out there, even when built this way. | ||

I never really tried it (I prefer bruiser from the jungle and noone'll let me solotop him as I said) but when I see that lategame Nunu's iceball is still scary for any carry in range with like 200 AP, I can just wonder about the look on your opponents' faces if you get to land a 350 AP (RoA-DC-masteries-runes,roughly) sapling on all 5. | ||

Think about it, brand/annie/gragas/orianna/morgana would be just as screwed :/ LeBlanc's damage isn't what falls off late game, but rather her CDs are too long for team fighting. She can still take anyone under 70mr 100->0. When you have anti engage, LEblancs 10 second CD ult is amazing poke on tanks as well. Although LB definitely falls off hardest, you cannot ignore her unless you don't want your carries to be alive. Against Warmog Kogmaw and ryze I think all APs are pretty useless though. | ||
