Without sarcasm, this was probably the most professional maneuver the Russian army has pulled off in Ukraine so far. They've had a lot of practise at this point. Seems like the retreats are the only thing that goes okay.

I see 3 options: 1: The Russians executed a retreat really well, with good cover. 2: The Russians faked that they remained with more forces than expected, the Ukrainians could have pushed the issue harder and earlier. 3: There are more Russians left than they admit. Which is it? The city seems liberated, though, which is great. What is the next move? A push towards Maripol? Or Crimea directly?

If they wanted to destroy the city all they needed to do was fight in it, street by street. They could have leveled it if they wanted to, they didn’t. To me it looks like the few days between Russia announcing their withdrawal and Ukraine taking the city were a deliberate attempt to avoid fighting in the streets. If you catch up to the retreating Russians they’ll have to stop and return fire and then civilians get hit.

![]() A crucial factor in these victories is that none of the HIMARS have been destroyed by Russia.

The only Russian hope is that support dries up but that seems unlikely given the success the Ukraine is having. Mobilization seemingly did nothing and Ukraine is getting more equipment and even more advanced stuff all the time. The "right" move for Putin would be declaring that all the Nazis and Satanists have been destroyed and back on out. its not happening. I imagine Putin is now hoping for Republicans to bail him out by gaining control of part of Congress and stopping more aid. Or the winter turning (part of) the EU, unlikely considering how soft this winter is sofar. With maybe a tiny hope for some sort of counter offensive after the winter thaw.

He can then say that the operation was a great success as Ukraine lies in ruin and all it took was some dumb shmucks from LPR, DPR and using stocks of obsolete gear from the military warehouses, thus also cleaning up the inventory. I really wouldn't put it past the current Russian regime to frame it like that and call it a victory in the end...
