This seat is 100% Trumps loss. Jeff Flake would easily won this race. There's zero evidence to back that up. He was at 35%/35% fav/unfav in 2016, and similarly even in 2015, before he got into it with Trump. Conservatives were already pissed at him. Trump's approval rating is like 50%+ in Arizona (which means I'm not really sure it's a swing state yet). At least I think that's what I saw for an exit poll. At any rate he's doing better there than one might expect. Jeff Flake would have been in the fight of his life as well. Combine a long and bitter primary, which ends way too close to the general, with a good Democrat environment and a moderate nominee running to the right, it was going to be hard for a candidate as lackluster as McSally or Flake. I will however enjoy watching another left-wing Democrat have fun playing moderate though, must be exhausting. (She supported sending troops to the border for the caravan and refused to endorse the Democrat running for Gov, lol). Still, this will teach the 2020 Democrat primary voters nothing, I suspect. Which means.... On to 2020! (Florida is over) As a Republican who now gets to watch a car crash on the other side and not my own, I really look forward to it. Hope GH comes back as primaries arrive! Yeah, conservatives didn’t decide this race. Independent and moderate Republican voters did. The conservatives purity tests in the primary and rampant support of Trump meant he didn’t feel like he could win. The Republican conservative base Isn’t concerned with electability and lost a senate seat Republicans have held since 1988.
Sorry if my post gave the impression that it did. Flake is unpopular even with the kind of Republican that would normally like him. Kind of like John Kasich, but annoying in a different way. As I said, a lot of factors went into this and congrats to Sinema for the win. But saying Flake would have won is ridiculous. Conservatives had no good options, for what it's worth. McSally was more of a John McCain than a Jeff-Flake-the-congressman. You don't get to 18% popularity because of the president alone.

While Flake probably would have lost the election if he decided to defend his seat (hence why he retired), Trump absolutely did help McSally lose a pretty winnable election. Outside of states like WI and NC, the Democrats were able to break the Republican gerrymander due to voting base realignments if we're speaking generally.
The current gerrymanders would have worked perfectly for a hypothetical President Romney, who would have carried the majority of these middle/upper middle class suburban seats. But that's exactly where Trump and the Republicans seen the most drastic loss in support.
With the American economy being (on paper) exceptional, the Republicans (on paper) really shouldn't have lost as many seats as they did. The last time a president had such good economic conditions going into a midterm election was Clinton in 1998 and, well, managed to gain a couple house seats and break even in the senate.

Its going to be a problem in the suburbs in general. This economy isn't going to last forever either.

I missed that post by brian, its a good one. I actually responded to one of kwark's posts in a PM because I didn't feel like it was worth talking here. Glad you are keeping tabs on what people respond too @shockkey. Id just like to make it clear that I don't feel required to respond to every single person who responds to something i've said(nor should anyone), I don't need the dopamine hit from a forum battle that goes on for a few pages.
@brian I believe you found some pretty stupid posts by some pretty stupid people, I still stand by from what i've seen that subreddit doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as everyone states and I imagine it has a lot more traffic. Also I don't think anything you linked their warrants censorship, which was what the discussion is about, not conspiracy theory's. Also I think many people on the forum took a quick look at the the reddit over the last couple of days and have posted about it commenting that it doesn't seem so bad at a glance and posted here.

Keep in mind that this weekend was Veteran's Day. National holidays tend to be when people post celebrations as opposed to angry yelling.
Yup, and now it's like 90% election conspiracy on the front page.

I really need to start following T_D. They are ahead of DJT himself on this stuff. Their memes will be on FOX tomorrow for sure so that Dear Leader can repeat them later. The Trump base is now plainly all in on not counting all the votes if it means they will lose.

I've spent the last week lurking T_D (some kind of morbid curiosity), and these kind of reactions make the bulk of the top posts often. So, no, it is not an outlier by some stupid outcasts. The whole sub is stoking flames and anger, and more often than not speaking about militia to root out the dems. They cannot accept that another way can exist that MAY get more than 50% of the votes. If you really want, I can do like Brian and get hundreds of quotes (well upvoted) from only the past 3/4 days ?

Yup, and now it's like 90% election conspiracy on the front page. It’s a conspiracy but the woman in charge of counting the votes in Broward was actually found guilty by a judge of destroying ballots in 2016 Wasserman-Schulz vote? https://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/fl-sb-broward-elections-supervisor-broke-law-snipes-canova-20180514-story,amp.html
Why was she even still there after being found guilty? Possibly just to make it easier for republicans to bring up the prior ruling and cancel the recount.

Isn't Florida famously incompetent though? This one falls to Occam's Razor, I think.

i had mentioned you by name in my first post specifically because you had said this forum is alike, so i’ll still challenge you to find anything similar here.
i think aside from the supreme court itself, you’d find yourself in the minority in not believing calls for violence are worthy of censorship. their bar is incitement. when one or two of these lunatics finally acts on the bullshit they spew on that subreddit, we’ll have made it. it not only would be worthy of censorship, but then just straight up criminal. it is absolutely a cesspool of hateful trolls.
discounting the few posts i quoted as ‘stupid posts by stupid people,’ is nothing more than that. it was only the third thread i clicked on. it is by no means a rarity. i could make a good living finding calls for violence on that sub.

Ya ill cop to not being able to find anything close to that here. I wasn't discounting the posts you quoted, I was saying they are stupid posts by stupid people. I'm not sure where to go with the SC incitement part of your post i'm not qualified nor familiar enough with those laws, suffice to say I lean heavily towards free speech and slim to nil censorship.

fair enough, and i wanted to take back what i said on your discounting anything but ran off to work instead. so, sorry for that. i had read into it on my own.

Honestly, California has had so much urban sprawl without adequate funding of fire prevention that there is a bit of truth to that. But also there have been few federal resources and funding for that same fire prevention. And a lot of cuts, from a lot of reports. California is one of the higher tax states in the country and already pays a ton into the federal government, so asking for some back to manage the growth into these higher fire risk areas isn’t unreasonable.
But global warming also has a part to play. California has had a drought for years now and a problem keeping water flowing. I don’t know if it is the longest drought in recorded history, but it has been going on for so long that congress should have tasked money to assist different areas of the state with preventing fires.
Finally, I wouldn’t lean into Mercury News to much. They are a weird site and I’m not sure they have reporters. Any of the major news outlets in the US are a better source of information on the fires.

The folks on the right that talk about freedom of speech are not really interested protecting true freedom of speech. They are interested in assuring their message has a platform everywhere. They do not give a shit if someone else is silenced by the government or forced to stand for the national anthem due to pressure from the President. Freedom of speech for that crowd is being unable to post/say whatever they want without consequences, including social consequences.
