Alright so me and a few friends all have diablo 2, and we cannot for the life of us get the multiplayer options to work. We've got a wireless router we're all connected to, and like we can play SC fine on the UDP thing, but there just doesn't seem to be a similar option for D2. Ideas?

Isn't the d2 Multiplayer ,other b.net ,etc all in the same place? Do you have the latest patches?
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Yeah we've got the right patches and stuff. The problem is that D2 offers only two options for multiplayer. battlenet, or TCP/IP. There has got to be some way to get the latter to work over a wireless lan.

You should use Hamachi. It's a great program that allows all of you to play over LAN together.

Hamachi is a no-go. We're all in the same room, and we can chat through hamachi. However we still can't get into each others game. Port issues perhaps?

find out the local ip of the host computer, then type that in over tcp/ip

to do that go to start->run->type in "cmd" then in DOS type in "ipconfig -all" or "netstat -n"
All you need in life is a strong will to succeed and unrelenting determination. If you meet these prerequisites, you can become anything you want with absolutely no luck, fortune or natural ability.

Yeah this is what we were trying before hamachi. Still not working sadly. Think it could be some sort of port issue if everyones accessing hamachi through the same one or something?

If the wireless router has internet capability... you can use Open Battle.net.

You actually didn't say that anywhere

I figured that was implied... Really on a forum such as this, if I ask a tech support question, I really don't expect to get the "well did you plug the computer in?", or "make sure the computer is turned on" questions.

For LAN play this should work:

1. Host computer "other multiplayer -> tcp/ip -> host game", write down the IP before you hit "host game", its displayed right there. No need for netstat or ipconfig.
2. Client computers: "other multiplayer -> tcp/ip -> join game", use the IP from 1.

You should probably be on the same Subnet tcp/ip wise. Any firewall, antivirus or similar not configured properly will of course kill D2 and almost every other game.

P.S. Why are people suggesting Hamachi when they are _already_ on a LAN?

Alright. Contrary to popular belief it seems... I am not retarded. That little "step 1 step 2" thing... yeah we figured that our on our own. What we're curious about is *why* it's not working.

So yes, anything specific that we need to do involving port openings/forwardings, firewalls, and other non-obvious things are very much appreciated. Giving me step-by-step directions of something a 5 year old could figure out... not so helpful.

So then, before anyone else gives us instructions on how to set up a game... here's what we've done.

-We've tried the simple aspect of one person hosting, others joining that IP.
-We've tried getting both subnet IP, and actual web IP. Neither work
-We tried all getting into the same room in hamachi, and tried again with both those IPs, and the one hamachi assigns you. None worked

What could we be missing?

i googled a little , maybe it helps
Blizzard Battlenet
This allows for -1- machine on the network to take advantage of Blizzard's BattleNet system for playing online games such as Diablo II and StarCraft. The 6112 port is needed in both TCP and UDP for StarCraft and Diablo II, and the 4000 port is needed for Diablo II. No other settings should be needed.

IN TCP 4000
IN TCP 6112
IN UDP 6112
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

We're not trying to get to battle net.

So, now we tried all disconnecting from our router, and hosting our own ad-hoc network, (wireless). Still totally unable to get any games working. Horridly frustrating.

haemon, why do you expect people to put in effort to help you if you blow up every post? Just relax it.

Here it is, 3 years after the situation repaired; and you seem to be the only person on the internet who has fixed a problem similar to the one I'm having.

Myself and a few friends are trying to get D2 to work over Ad-Hoc and are failing at it. We connect to the network, find our respective IPs through ipconfig, ping each other successfully. One of us then hosts a game, everyone tries to connect and it fails.

I'm not a total network moron but I'm at my wits end with this.

Also, just to make it clear we have no access to the internet when we plan to play this over ad-hoc, and when we do we use Hamachi successfully.

EDIT:

Problem resolved, and as a guard against someone like me failing at this later I will actually post the fix:

If you are in win7/Vista and connected to an adhoc network chances are the network is registered as a "public" network. Any amount of firewall removing will not let D2 play over TCP/IP if the network is public.
You have to change it to a Home network.

To do this, in 7 at least, you have to go to the homegroup option in "Network connections and Shareing" window and it will ask you to specify the network type. Select home and then close the homegroup window. The "Unidentified network" name will remain but the icon for the network will be a house image.

It seems that in public mode Win7/Vista blocks communications from none identified computer (like the winXP machine i was trying to play with).

I hope this helps someone, sometime.
The game
