With the establishment of an official league, LoL looks to challenge [BW] for the e-sports throne.
Many are speculating that esports affiliated entities are shifting focus to LoL from SC2 as well. For the first time in Korean e-sports history, a European media company is the official sponsor for the league, and with that it seems e-sports is branching out towards the foreign scene. According to the numbers, on the March 14th GameTricks, a PC-bang analytics provider, said LoL now occupies 12.45% of total playtime, close behind Aion which holds the title at 15.35%. LoL surpassed games such as Sudden Attack, BW and Fifa Online2, which have kept pace with Aion, over the course of four months.
Public opinion is that LoL is the most successful foreign game since Blizzard's WoW, and is now threatening BW for the throne of e-sports. According to reports from the end of 2011, Starcraft 2, which was once ranked at 12th in total playtime, is now down to 18th.
On the 14th, OGN held an announcement for the commencement of the official LoL league, and introduced its sponsor. Azubu, its sponsor, is a media group based in Germany, and has signed a joint-partnership with OGN on January 27th. The partnership plans to provide live streaming in both Korean and English, and VoD service.
Robert Sheik [No idea how it's actually spelled lol], representing Azubu, said "We hope to provide high quality e-sports content with this sponsorship and develop a solid infrastructure for the global gaming industry.
Starting on March 21, the league plans to cast matches biweekly, in which 16 teams from not just Korea, but NA and Europe will participate. The total prizepool will be 0.2 billion won (~$180,000) and starting from this fall, four seasons of tournaments are planned to be held.
Currently whether LoL will usurp BW for the e-sports throne is a hot topic of discussion. LoL has been registered as Kespa's 42nd official progaming title, and the producer of LoL has also shown great support in e-sports-ifying LoL. In the midst of events such as MBC game shutting down and the general decline in interest in the e-sports scene, LoL has garnered popularity from both native and foreign fans, and the question of whether it will succeed as an e-sports is gathering much attention.
and the TL;DR version from OpticalShot
Uh, I'm going to put away any personal reactions to this news and stick to translating the article linked in the OP (the original Korean source).
Some of the key points are:
- First line in the article: LoL is contending for the #1 spot in the gaming industry. (and the article is about why)
- LoL is the 2nd most played game in the PC Cafe (doesn't say whether it's based on time or person/game count) at 12.45%, beaten only by Aion which is holding the top spot at 15.35%.
- SC2 was 12th on the PC Cafe rankings late 2011, and it's down to 18th as of the most recent survey.
- OGN will broadcast the LoL tournament live twice a week, starting on the 21st (presumably March). 16 teams from all over the world will participate. Total tournament prizes add up to ~$177000 USD. 4 LoL tournaments are planned for this year.

I don't think LoL's success is due to the skill required to play. Heck, anybody who played LoL could tell you that at a high enough level, it's actually quite hard. High level LoL require a team, with a good chemistry, something that is really hard to achieve aside from any kind of individual skill you would need to play SC2 at the highest level.
Now SC2 is, in my own opinion, a failure, not as a game but as a community. The game interface just failed to keep people into the game while LoL is all community - a shitty one yes, but a community nonetheless.

And that's what makes it harder. Geez too hard of a concept too grasp for some?
Please do start playing and see how easy it really is to win. I'm sure you'll get have a 100% winrate

LoL is the next big competitive game. And has brought people into competetive gaming like no other. It's sad that BW's successor couldn't take te spot, but LoL is deserved. I used to think SC2 was big and bringing more people into pro gaming, and then I saw the LoL numbers XD

One thing that makes LoL less appealing to me at the pro level is the number of strategies. In LoL the meta-game is stale and while there are a lot of champions, the champions all play the same set roles in a game. In Dota there is variety - you can push all-in, you can roam gank without laning, you can run global teleport strategies, you can turtle farm, you can run tri-lanes and empty lanes, there doesn't have to be a jungler, there doesn't have to be a carry, etc.
Another thing is the range of skills. There are long range skills in LoL as there are in Dota, but in Dota skills have longer range on average, and this leads to less clumping, which makes the game easier to watch.

Too little people actually still play sc2. The fans that at first played and folowed the game are moving on. The game just doesnt live up to the legend that was/is SC:BW. The connection to the community is lost.
LoL however has a very strong playerbase that occasionaly watches matches. And with 11 mil people playing the game that is enough to create very high viewer numbers. SC2 had its chance. But Bnet2 is just not suited for a social community and the custom games never got started cause of crappy design.

do people actually find that game fun to watch? It has no spectator value IMO.

SC2 fanbois will be mad. League of Legends is a more popular game for a reason. It's not just because it is a casual game either. For it to sustain itself with a high population, the game has to have some sort of quality to it. SC2 population dropped like a rock after the first initial 5-6 months.

I can say without a doubt, Blizzard fucked it up huge with trying to monopolize Battle.net 2.0 and its greed. No LAN support, shitty as fuck UI, a system that doesn't even encourage a community to exist, and poor response to these complaints... If TL didn't exist, I bet SCII wouldn't even have a community.

Not surprising, LoL is a very accessible game for a wide demographic of gamers, from casuals to the hardcore. the game is lacking in many ways, but this doesnt matter with its player base being so large already. and just stylistically, LoL already fits in amongst all the other asian f2p games, while at the same time having its own unique look.

I see League of Legends very much like I see WoW.
It's very rewarding by playing a lot of games. It doesn't matter if you win or lose because you still get IP and EXP. Heroes and Runes + Skill Trees and lvl system makes it very easy lure players to grind games. I remember some of my friends grinding "vs bots" games to get fast IP.
They also have a YouTube Channel. I feel that Blizzard needs to engage more with the community, it's the age of CASUALS. Time to get some DLC, skins, portraits etc. for a currency. Get the casual market back. But if people don't want this to happen, then just let League of Legends be #1. It doesn't matter, more people do enjoy the "easier" game, for example my 14 year old sister is lvl 30 and have like ELO 1,6k.

the difference between dota, lol is that lol lacks some very intrinsic aspects of the original. Denying of creeps makes the early game experience totally different as opposed to no denying. It's favors the faster player and the more strategic players. The gold reduction when you are dead leads to interesting risk vs reward strategies that Lol lacks. Lol also lacks the heritage, history and lore around the heroes and competition that dota has accumulated since it's inception which lol never will be able to reach.

SC2 was never going to replace BW so I guess something had to come along and take its place.

If you would've never played any RTS game and only played FPS games before Sc2, you'd NEVER ever win 20games in a row, not even from bottom bronze(when i came in Sc2 from CoD stuff, i had maybe 40apm). Well, i've never played any game that would be even close to being similiar to LoL, yet still i managed to win that many games.
