There are other sayings as well..one of them is "Fix the problems in your own backyard, before you go telling your neighbor how to fix his".
Sorry, I am completely opposed to sending foreign countries when we have entire families living on the street wondering where their next meal is going to come from.

To put 240,000 tonnes of food into perspective: in 2008, the United States produced 307 million tonnes of maize. Only a little over 8.3 million tonnes of that was actually used directly for human consumption in the United States. Nearly 130 million tonnes was fed to livestock.
240,000 tonnes of processed food really isn't that much, especially if it means that billions can be saved in military budgets.

If you think a little bit, we can easily realise that yeah, that's a lot of food, but how many people could live from it for how long?
About NK's intentions, we can only wait, it's a kid educated in Switzerland if I'm right, so he could be a better dictator than his father.
And Dekoth, I'm not from the USA, therefore I'm not sure if I'm right, but I think that with the money people spend in weapons and the goverment invests' on military purposes, all the people living on the streets could easily have a house and food everyday.
And I don't really understand why this problem (and many others) could not be solved by diplomacy. I just think it's not necessary to go there and destroy their hole army and killing millions of soldiers just to put a pro-american dictatorship.
Sorry if my English is awful. This is just my opinion, and as I consider myself as a very ignorant person, you can reproach everything I've said.

No offense, but the amount of food that is being sent is like less then 0.0001 percent the US produces.
Edit: See the guy above lol.

See the guy above lol.
What did I say that's so funny? I don't really get why did you say that.

i know a lot of people are against giving food to north korea, but honestly it's the people who suffer, not the government. food aid is necessary to save lives, whereas providing it also can make headway into disarmamaent negotiations. hopefully this will continue, and i for one am glad the new leader isn't too eager to prove himself militarily.
|
the food aid might go to the military like usual.

I loll'ed because the guy above you basically told the same thing as I did.

America does not have a problem with a lack of food. People starving to death is so incredibly rare in America and people ar eworried that we are giving food aid to a country that DOES have a huge problem with lack of food. Like are you kidding me?

more food for NK means less food for everyone else... I find it funny that the United States complains about welfare and "we cant feed our poor" yet they can ship 200,000 tonnes of food at the snap of a finger.

this is a good step forward.

Even if the US did "complain" about that, it's not because of lack of food. Tens of millions of tons of food are just thrown out in the US every year.
200k is absolutely nothing... but hopefully it's noticeable for people in NK (if any of them even get it...)

poor North Korea. I was expecting some grand trade...but in the end its so sad (good thing overall of course). We'll stop our advanced nuclear enrichment process...could you umm send us tons of food??
|
If we follow Dekoth's theory, the whole world would still be living in shitty ages. He is pretty much saying since there are still people starving in the street, we should stop funding for these unnecessary science like space exploration, military research and the likes. Then we wouldn't have GPS, internet so to speak.
Truth be told, there are unlimited problems, even if no one is starving, you'd be looking at other stuff like good healthcare, educations for all, that is why you do things in parallel and adjust the funding accordingly.

1) North Korea violates sanctions.
2) The US rewards them with food, hoping they will comply.
3) North Korea gives the food to their largest military in the world.
4) The North Korean people continue to starve.
5) The North Korean government continues to pursue nuclear weapons.
The US government goes ahead with it, knowing all of these facts. Because they want the PR and they know people like those in this thread will eat it up, so to speak.
But that's just me being an eternal cynic. Maybe this new leader really will take NK in a positive direction. But given their history, I doubt it.

Guys Guys dont underestimate NK.
You People seem to forget... China and NK are buddies. Put it this way. If NK was a push over? why hasnt america or SK attacked them and get it over with? Thats because China supports NK. Maybe not like in a media sense.. but behind curtains ? BIG BUDDIES.
Look at it this way.. China is the main zerg base.. NK is the natural. If u study the landmark of china.. ul notice.. china relations are good with their neighbouring countries.(Guard ur back door)
So there is no way in hell NK is underpowered. The reason u get NK and SK is because America seperated them. America knew one day china will grow overpowered. So during the weak ages of china? america tried to weaken there "back doors"
But as time went by it didnt help much. So whats the best response to NK "CHINAS NATURAL"? BE NICE TO THEM BUT STAY CAUTIOUS. This isnt starcraft 2 man.. u cant just go sniping naturals.
Thats the way i see it

new leadership, someone has to extend an olive branch.

But what if giving a present allows you to fire one of your 1000 security guards you pay for just in case the starving guy decides to make a scene? It's a win-win. Except for the security guard who has to find a more productive career and his employer who lost some of its business.

I already like this new kid.
I hope its him anyway. The other guy I dont like so much.
