What makes "nanometer" so much easier to remember and comprehend than "10^-9 meters"? It is better because they are on the same scale. I know how many nm are in a meter. But I might need to look up how many meters are in an AU, Ly or parsec. Referring to a star as 2 solar masses is more meaningful than 4e30 kg. One thousand kilograms should be a megagram, not a tonne. P.S. 30 miles = 50 km, unless your teacher skipped the chapter about significant digits.

I wish America used the metric system like the rest of the world, though. Makes no sense and it makes us look silly. EDIT: BTW I thought Standard was Kelvin and such? If not then my 8th grade science teacher LIED

Not having freezing at zero is a pain though :/ A good system for casual temperature measurement would have the hottest weather for temperate climes at 100 degrees and freezing at zero. Very easy to tell how the weather is. What? Maybe where you live. Temperatures vary wildly across the US. Try telling someone from Arizona that it's rarely over 100F and they will laugh in your face. What a strange thing to say, really. I'm aware that there are different climates around the world. The idea of the system still applies, as everything above 100 is really hot.

That being said, why do Americans, who shunned the monarchy, use a monarch's system of measurement?

I prefer Fahrenheit a bit also, but for a different reason. I find the resolution of Celsius is a bit too coarse; one degree Fahrenheit is a good fundamental measure of temperature for me. Other than that I usually prefer metric (aside from the greater difficulty I sometimes have easily visualizing a metric measurement).

I think it is unnecessary and more of an impedance than an aid. Most measurement work and calculations are done in metric, its just converted to standard because its a stupid standard. As far as I see it, the only logical reason why the US still uses standard is because it will probably be a hassle to switch everything to metric. It's because for the average person the difference is negligible and the cost involved in converting would be astronomical.

US/UK use Standard mostly, whereas EU (and maybe other continents) use Metric. That's at least my experience. The metric system is used in most of the world, not just Europe. Even UK has the metric system as its official, though the Imperial system is still used there. The only reason I can see that the US shouldn't use the metric system is as many other in here have said that it would be a big bother to convert to metric :p

That being said, why do Americans, who shunned the monarchy, use a monarch's system of measurement? ? What? He's talking about significant figures, not the actual conversion multiplier. Everybody should be familiar with sig figs, not depending on the system of units they use. And we use the english system of units because it's what our infrastructure is built on. Metric is more intuitive (as long as you didn't grow up on English) but that's not a good enough reason to force American industry to buy all new equipment and change their operating procedures. Conversion is not difficult when working internationally, so I fail to see the problem. This is just the way things are.
