I have opened the Aberfeldy 12 though, only had one glass of it so I can't really say much about it, other than it's a pleasant yet simple whisky, as expected. It has a buttery/candy/caramel taste I'm not too familiar with and that I enjoyed quite a bit. A good affordable single malt that non-whisky types will probably appreciate.
I'm thinking about cracking open a nice bottle around Christmas time, too. Still trying to decide what. They say smoky scotch is great in the winter . Maybe Ardbeg 10?

Sipping on the Abelour Abundah Batch 50. Not a fan of having to dilute it down from 60%, but tastes good at least.

Haha, correct, zapz. But imagine having that bottle and a glass next to the computer anyway, and having to get up and walk to the kitchen. Lol
Has anyone here tried the Fujikai 10 years by any chance? It's quite unknown, a limited edition by a wine producing company, and by the time I found out about its existence it was impossible to get. I heard it's very peaty, but it's also has some yummy oily/leathery/salty notes. I know you guys love your Ardbeg, maybe s/o knows what this is like?

Lol Hehe, well I have a bottle of water with me constantly, and my "computer desk bottle" is a Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition bottled at 50% Abv. Doesn't require water like the Aberlour Abunad'h does but it's still much better with water. I have everything I need right here :>

The Fujikai is one of the most confusing tasting whiskeys I've ever had. I think I like it, but there's a lot going on. It's got a good bit of fruitiness in addition to what you mentioned-- a ton of flavors, but each seems pretty distinct instead of blending together.

Can anyone recommend me a rum cocktail that is drinkable all night? Alcohol-forward with some depth like a manhattan or a gin martini, but with rum. I want something that isn't a daiquiri or a mojito because those are a pain in the ass to make and are way too sugary to drink multiple of.

Long Island Iced tea (You need other spirits too tho), Cuba libre.. come to mind.
Also probably one of the simplest ones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macuá

Had a tasting with a few friends tonight.
I brougth Octomore 7.1, probably my favorite from the 'standard' Octomores I've tasted. Also tried Glenfiddich 18 years, Glengoyne 21 years (sherry), Springbank 12 years cask strength, Longrow 12 years Red Pinot noir, and Laphroaig quarter cask. The quarter cask I've tried Before and I really don't like it but the other 4 was nice, especially the Longrow one. The smell had me mesmerized and the taste was good. The wine finish really is noticable.

Anny comment on the Glenfiddich? I always see it when I go shopping, but it's a tad pricier tha a few others so haven't sprung for it

Haha thanks, that only made me want to try it more. I ordered a bottle off ebay for E70. Oh well, still cheaper than Octomore...

I want a drink served neat, not with a bunch of added sugar with ice in a highball glass.

It's not bad, seems like it would be a good beginner scotch or more of a bar drink than something I'd consistently buy for my house..It's definitely more on the light side in flavor. Kind of a flowery/fruity thing going on I think.

I always have a bottle of 15yr solera vat on hand. Is much better than the 12 imo, and worth the bit extra. (There is another 15yr in a gray case, not a fan of that one).

Glenfiddich 12 is similar to Glenlivet 12 in that its a very good basic scotch. Its smooth enough and has an inoffensive taste profile.
It gets a lot of hate on whisky boards (along with Glenlivet 12) for this, which is largely not deserved.
If you like Ryes and Bourbons it will probably be different enough to try, though it might be bland, and if you don't like it you can always make Old Fashioned's with or any other whisky cocktail. If you're into Scotch you will probably not like it, since it won't be different enough to be unique.

generally there aren't many rum forward cocktails because rums tend to be very bad and sweet. The only rum you might consider for a rum forward cocktail would be rum you shouldn't mix with anything. And, because of the flavor profile of rum you're going to have to add some less common flavors.
In general the Daiquiri is the answer to your question. Because its both super easy to make and not sugary at all. Unless you're doing it wrong.
: IBA lists 9/5/3 but its much easier as 4/2/1
2 oz rum 1 oz lime juice .5 oz simple
Simple is easy to make, its sugar water half and half. So .5 oz is about a half a sugar cube or a sugar cube or so. Total amount doesn't really matter much its just sweetness to taste. Too sweet, use less sugar. Not sweet enough, add some more.
---
Did some digging for you and it looks like you can make a standard Old Fashioned with rum and it should come out OK. An Old Fashioned is just Liquor, bitters, and a sugar cube. Use the right bitters and temper the amount of sugar and it should work. Probably best to use a dark rum for this.
The only others that i came up with look to be Martini/Manhattan variants. Which may work, but may not. I am not a fan of rum(though i am a fan of Martini/Manhattan variants)
Note that these are in parts, not in oz as above
El Presidente
2 White Rum 1 Dry Vermouth 1 Orange Curacao dash Grenadine [probably needs to be real]
Roosevelt
6 Dark Rum 2 Dry Vermouth 1 Orange Juice sugar cube[or half]
Perfect Rum Manhattan
2 Dark Rum 1 Dry Vermouth 1 Sweet Vermouth Bitters Sugar to taste[honey syrup is suggested]
-
There are also a number of tea punches (So, Tea, a citrus juice, rum, and a flavor kick like bitters)
---------------
If you're willing to go to Tequila a Tequila and Tonic or a 2/1/2 is quite nice. Tequila and tonic is as it sounds, and a 2/1/2 is Tequila/Campari/Grapefruit in those proportions. The Campari cuts the grapefruit and tequila and gives it a nice bitter flavor. Tequila OF's are also quite good.
edit: I noticed that quite a lot of the pairings with rum was orange(juice/bitters etc) and this seems like a natural pairing to me. Orange seems to be the more bitter of the common citrus and that will be necessary to tone down the sweetness of the rum.

ok. I just read a review of the Fujika 10 because it sounded interesting in you guys descriptions. The reviewer just murdered it an gave it a 71/100 score. Like, what? How can he say it's an utterly disappointing Whisky and afterwards give it a 70%? These scores sure are arbitrary, lol. What I can deduce is, that everything below, say 77 is "crap" in the reviewer's opinion?
Putting that aside, I was more looking for a price tag, than a review, because I want to have a Whisky-gift for my girlfriends father, wo is a huuuuuuuuuge Whisky fan (i.e. about 60 Whiskys at home). And 70€ for half a litre is a tad too much for me. As for now, I've researched some small (0,05L) bottlings of older Whiskys from the Cadenhead's Authentic collection from my local dealer. But as I find the international knowledge in this thread exceeding mine by far, not just because we're from so many different places here, I wanted to ask arund if anyone is willing to share a secret christmas gift with me Preferably available in miniature, cause money's not that loose right now, especially since my bike got stolen (fucking shit) and I need a new one, but that's another story.

Well there's your answer then. Most of the cocktails seem to have something sugary added to it..

Well yes neat cocktails do not exist by definition. Assume he means "straight up".
