Originally a producer of component whiskeys for Seagram's they discovered that a few of the component whiskeys were actually really good and started producing them for resale. Now they're the largest producer of Rye (and probably Bourbon) in the world. Rather than sell their whiskeys directly(though i have heard they came up with a brand of their own) they sell batches to new distilleries for finishing. Some distilleries make a habit of not bothering to produce their own but most change the whiskey in noticeable ways, or specify production requirements to MGP. Some of the better Ryes on the market come out of MGP and though they will all have a fairly similar taste profile (due of having the same mash bill) there is enough variation in finishing to be able to tell the difference. Basically its just good cheap liquor. (though some people charge up like crazy for it. E.G. Angels Envy Rye)

I bought it 14 month ago and it being mz first peated one, and a strong one too, it takes me quiet some time to drink it. Anyway, I tried it the other day and it did smell smoky, which is fine, but I also smelled new bicycle tyres. Not so pleasant. And this happened two separate times and havent tried it since. The tastings before I did not smell anything like it. If that doesn't help, I'm going to use it to marinate Tofu. My favorite entry level bourbon is Bulleit (~$30ish here) http://www.bulleit.com/ If you can go a little higher, Four Roses is excellent. You can check the wiki page for the (somewhat dubious) legal requirements of naming a whiskey a bourbon. I find they are typically sweeter than your standard whiskey or rye.

The single barrel looks extremely pleasing. Like a french soldier with the cork as his hat. Do you by any chance know, whether that little band at the bottleneck is leather or not? For a Whisky that will run out and be replaced by - imo - an inferior bottle, that's quite the steal. It being the first Whisky I bought just sealed the deal. Will write again after I've tried it and all nostalgia being drippled away :_)

I'm not following distributor's news, just enjoying drinking *cough* The Glenlivet 12 is being phased out in some markets to be replaced with the Glenlivet Founder's Reserve, a no age statement whisky that isn't very good. Thanks for putting it more clearly. I meant that the Glenlivet 12 in Germany will be replaced by, exactly the Founder's Reserve. I did put up some comments about that one a while ago and while I'm not convinced yet, he's kinda grown on me. Sill, I can't taste or smell more than pear while the Whisky is in the glass, but after the remnants have dried up, it smells kinda like beeswax and some hint of vanilla. Not quite sure about the vanilla though. That actually is something I recommend for every Whisky. Put a lid on your glass after you finished drinking. Especially if there is a little more left over - happens to me sometimes, cause too much alcohol, especially after working at the computer for long hours, is prone to give me a migrane >_<. And after it's dried up a day later, the smell that remains can be totally altered compared to before the drying. For me at least ![]() ps: I find it entertaining, that your post counter on liquiddota (where I usually post from in this thread) is like 5 posts, but you're one of the "gurus" of this thread xD

I've been sober for a couple weeks (personal challenge, habit was getting in the way) but I plan on breaking the streak on the 20th. All I see here (Hokkaido) are NIKKA and Suntory stuff in the conbinis (are liquor stores even a thing here?), but I haven't really shopped around. Anything I'll feel dumb about for missing when I'm gone? Ditto for Korea (Seoul), heading there on the 21st. Suntory makes some of the best whiskies in the world at the moment. Last year their Yamazaki single malt was voted #1. If you're into blended whisky, I'd say go for the the Hibiki Harmony, if you're into peat, go for their Hakushu, but if you want something really sublime, grab the Yamazaki 12 or 18 year.
