Took a bit to get used to them, but i started to enjoy them. the past 4-5 months i've been trying a lot of different whiskeys and seeing what kinds i like. stuff that i've had (in addition to above mentioned) include: - makers mark - Jameson - Jameson 12 - Bushmills white - George Dickel no.12 - some speyside single malt that i forgot the name of - glenmorangie 12 looking to try these in the near future - redbreast - bushmills black bush - yamazaki 12 - JW green Looks like you have nice, mild starter stuff there. Ever tried something peaty? ![]() Recently visited my first official whisky tasting in a local library. Of the six whiskies presented, I had three already at home (well, one 1:1, one cask strength and one in another version, so it was fine). :D Was funny to see the reactions of the others for Caol Ila though. Total love or hate. I feel like I have a nice mix now: ![]() Glendronach 15yo Revival, Ardbeg Uigeadail and Highland Park 18yo still on my wishlist, but no need to rush, as there is plenty left to enjoy. =) Planning to get down to less open bottles though. Maybe ~12 instead of the current 20 (+rum/tequila/and mixing stuff). Not going to replace the Bushmills 10yo with a new one, but for sure the Laga 16yo when they are empty. I still like the full spectrum, sometimes more sherry, sometimes more peat. All so good. ![]() good stuff man. i love the Balvenie double-wood, that sherry cask really gives it a sweet sting. never liked the laphroigs much though, too rough. ardbeg is my choice of smokey islay ![]()

I have not drunken any Ardbegs though. Still quite like the pepper note of Talisker. You cannot really go wrong with any of them. :D That is why I started as broadly as possible, to find my personal preferences. Just make sure you constantly re-evaluate those, since your taste will change over time and you will notice a lot of flavours that you did not initially.

Thats great stuff, it wont kill the wallet, and is a good introduction to peat. I personally like laphroaig the best out of the Islay distillerys but Caol Ila, Ardbeg and Lagavulin are great too. No need to get a fancy expensive version, just start with the basic bottlings incase you dont like it. They are all good.

HP12 is only barely peated, but I can't really think of any real halfway malts out there.

It is Talisker and Caol Ila mixed with two other malts after all. :-) But you better hurry if you want that one, since it is discontinued with stocks running out this year: http://www.scotch-tasting-bums.com/Blog,_Year_2/Entries/2012/1/16_Johnnie_Walker_Green_15-Year_Old_Walks_Off_Into_The_Sunset.html But why are you suggesting "half way malts"? He just asked for "strong and peaty" :-)

also, that news link about discontinuing jw green makes me nervous. i'll need to get it soon since it's been one blend that i've heard many good things about. hopefully, the local stores don't jack up the price too soon. how much does jw green cost around you guys? i checked two of the stores in downtown dc near where i work, and it costs about 62 to 65 USD ![]() ![]()

Just bought Glenfiddich 15yo for about 46 dollars, which I think is a fair price for a whisky usually priced around 70 dollars or higher (danes: Kvickly - 269kr, normalpris 399kr). I love the smell and taste of the 12yo so I think im in for a treat. Furthermore I fell upon Glenfiddich Malt Master's edition. I have no clue about this one, it has no age statement and the price is about 45 dollars. Never heard of it before. I read a few reviews telling me quite different tales. So I'm asking you: have you tried it? is it worth the money?

We have draconian importation laws and a state owned liqueur commission. Even JW black (probably the quintessential "first whisky" - no?) costs $55 for a 750ml bottle. And it just gets worse as the bottles get more rare/appear to have more value. Lagavulin 16 for $110. Oi.
