Today, July 1st, is Canada Day! Usually I refrain from making threads but something nudged me into action.
Why today?
Frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday", the occasion marks the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date, but the British Parliament kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.
For those who are not familiar with the geography + Show Spoiler +
I think colloquially people will think of celebrating hockey, beer, maple syrup, milk in bags(lol), great forests and lakes. I myself identify Canada with multiculturalism and liberal democracy. Oh and mounties. You can't beat mounties when it comes to a police force. We've made quite a rich history, whether it be of good or bad. But easily Canada has a unique place in the world.
A few discussion questions: 1) What's your favourite event in canadian history? 2) Who's your favourite Canadian? (be it hockey player, activist/politician, etc) 3) How would you describe Canada and being Canadian?
A few events to take note of: Prince William and bride Kate visiting Ottawa for celebrations Great Big Sea, Sam Roberts, among others playing a show at Parliament Hill Canada day in Trafalgar Square(London) http://www.canadadaylondon.com/
(if I made a mistake or missed something please do tell)

I am gonna go have some lunch with some friends at our local Tim Hortons, head over to the forks to check out some shit, then BBQ at my place with fireworks and booze. Should be fun!
2) Who's your favourite Canadian? (be it hockey player, activist/politician, etc)
Terry Fox! Close second is Tommy Douglas.
3) How would you describe Canada and being Canadian?
I think Canada generally overrates itself and its impact on the world stage. The world, I believe, does not think of us as a bunch of aww-shucks nice guys who do no wrong with their adorable, ridiculous accents – with good reason. That said, I'm proud to be Canadian and count myself lucky to be one.
Happy Canada Day, I'm going to do what I do every Canada Day, update my facebook to some retarded "hurrr durrr happy canada day" and then go smoke a joint in anger at my country.

Canadians = Best people on Earth
Canada = Shittiest country on Earth.
Being sheltered is nice.
HCD
Well feel free to move if you are so unhappy, nobody will miss you.
Happy Canada All! Cant wait to go out to CoP and check out the fireworks tonight, any calgarians heading out that way?
Favourite Canadian has to be Justin Bieber.... LOL ok sorry I just had to.
Favourite moment is the victory in 1812 over the United states, we weren't an independent country yet but it was still the Canadian people.
As for how to describe being Canadian, I wouldn't even describe it. We're all united by the fact we're proud of being Canadian, we aren't forced to think this way or act this way, we're just a tapestry of diversity and co-operation, that's why I love Canada.
canada day rules... drinking, smoking weed all day in downtown ottawa! Eating poutine and bacon and bbqs! Just having a good time and meeting tons of awesome ppl... then fireworks at night followed by more drinking weed bbq man nothing better in life :D

I am saddened, I had hoped the myth that Canadians burned down the White House was put to rest years ago, but alas! I guess its like Washington's wooden teeth, it just can't be dispelled!

Almost every year I am happy and excited for Canada Day, and am proud to be Canadian. But time has changed our once great country. The government has increasingly become less representative of the "old" canadian values I cherished. More than just our government, this demonstrates a shift in the minds of our nation. This is democracy, and I have no choice but to swallow. It won't be long before people start to forget that Canadians were supposed to be nice, that we were supposed to be tolerant, that we were all a bunch of tree huggers who liked hockey and beer and bacon. More than ever, I find my fellow Canadians disgusting. Between their social views, their disregard for our land and our children's inheritance, their greed, and their corruption, I have little to celebrate today.
My only solace is that I'd still rather live here than most of the world. =P

Any thread with Canada seems brings out this garbage. I would rather you leave the country if we disgust you. I have never seen an election have so many angry people in it because they did not get their candidate into power. A lot of people go through this in their life, you will get over it like other people have had to. Grow up and accept it until next election. Please explain?
And in response to that, he is referring to the increasing power of the Conservative Party of Canada at the federal level. They are behind a lot of pretty unpopular policy changes (cutting funding for the arts, openly discussing making abortion illegal, discussing maybe trying to get gay marriage banned again, etc) and at least a dozen of their currently serving Members of Parliament are under investigation for or have been convicted of fraud.
But, aside from that, we still live in a great nation and I'm thoroughly proud to say I'm from here. Go Canada!

Thank you for your dishonest representation and simplification of a complex political shift as "qq election". You're not doing your side credit.
For the above poster and those interested in the reason I make these statements...
Canada has been changing over the past two decades. We have a majority conservative government even though the majority of canadians voted against harper (gg fptp). We backed out of Kyoto, we are involved in too many conflicts we don't support (sound familiar USA?). Our science minister won't even come out and say he believes in evolution. Along with this shift has come several things: more corporate welfare, reductions in funding from everything from battered women's shelters, to immigration programs, to a complete disregard for the environment. Fun fact! Now Canada, per capita, pollutes more than the United States. Alberta, my province, in particular, (also conservative) has basically sold off our assets to foreign companies for pennies on the dollar. And the culture, where do I begin... it's a land of rig pigs with too much cash, nothing to spend it on but cocaine and big trucks and liquor, a place where racism and homophobia thrive. The friendly stereotypes that americans have given canadians rarely apply anymore.
I'm not even blaming the conservatives... What hurts me the most is that my fellow canadians actually support this shit. And no, I'm not leaving, because I love this country and I'm doing my best to prevent it from going to shit.

Just so we're clear, Alberta is like the most racist province in Canada, if you moved west to BC or east to Toronto/Quebec you would see people in general are far more accepting. However I have to agree about the country going downhill, especially in the sense of business corruption. The lack of competition that is enforced by a law to protect "Canadian Identity" has turned the business in Canada into basically a monopoly of sorts. I hope eventually the government might intervene and finally decide to do its job. However I plan to learn swedish very soon.

Just so we're clear, provinces can't be racist. They are just provinces. What is your statement based on? Did stats canada do a poll?
"Hello, this is Stats Canada calling, are you racist?" "Well, yes, of course. I'm an albertan after all."
A few discussion questions: 1) What's your favourite event in Canadian history? 2) Who's your favourite Canadian? (be it hockey player, activist/politician, etc) 3) How would you describe Canada and being Canadian?
1)None, Canada hasn't done much for the world really. Its just the quite kid in the corner everyone knows but doesn't care too much about. 2)HuK, he plays SC2. 3)Quite kid in the corner, being Canadian is like being an American but being smug because your economy isn't crap and your country doesn't wage war every 10 years on a new country. And doesn't release 40% of the pollution yet having 5% of the population.
1) What's your favourite event in canadian history? I don't have a true favourite, so I will say when Patrick Roy "quit" the Montreal Canadians and was traded to the Nordiques. Vimy Ridge makes me proud to be Canadian, but its not my favourite event. 2) Who's your favourite Canadian? (be it hockey player, activist/politician, etc) Neil Peart. No questions. 3) How would you describe Canada and being Canadian? Canada is a great place with some dark sides it tries to hide from the rest of the world. Being Canadian is great as long as you have money. Even if you don't it isn't bad.

I would say Alberta is about equal with us in Saskatchewan (At least the cities. Saskatoon where I live for sure.) in terms of racism and homophobia, and to be frank, most people here disgust me. The same dumb rich people with big trucks and huge amounts of liquor and drugs are found here, as our economy is strong. Small towns are much different and there are types of people who I see from them (I deal with a lot of small town folks at work), the friendly farmers (I love these guys. They fit the friendly Canadian stereotype and are the most understanding and humble people you will meet.) and grumpy, racist old people (The backbone of the Conservative/Saskatchewan Party here. If ridings were broken into smaller groups with the cities would be primarily NDP/Liberal while rural areas would be purely Conservative, but since they are combined, the huge number of old people who vote Conservative overrule the youth and younger adult voters of the cities, hence why every riding in our province is Conservative except one in Regina that is the stronghold of Liberal Ralph Goodale).
Regardless, happy Canada Day everyone. I may not like some of the people here, but it is a great place to live.
Didn't do anything all day :| just drove my bike around and seen the last of the fireworks just as they were ended.. I feel like I wasted this special day,

I live outside Edmonton, and I'm probably the most culturally liberal person I know.
But then again, that probably isn't saying too much... :p
I crossed the border tonight to go watch transformers 3 (only place around with a big enough theater to have it in 3d) and had forgotten that today was... well, today. Just as I'm through customs, I hear an explosion behind me and I flip SHIT, thinking the border patrol is shooting at me or something ridiculous.
It was fireworks. Border patrol officers had quite a laugh though after they figured out what I stopped so suddenly for.
Born and raised for 12 years in New Jersey, been almost 11 years since I've come to Canada (and Quebec/Montreal). Rough transition (arguably), but great country!
Man, I'm gonna go watch the parade with my lifelong friends, go to the bar, go BBQ, drink some more beer, and if all goes right, hopefully Steve Nash will be a Raptor.
Canada Day has always been "be a walking stereotype day" for me :D
Remember, if you don't like it here, work on changing it. Educate yourself, work hard and push for the Canada that you want to see!
Alternately, we can make the internet a confusing place and try to make people watch the last 2 seasons of the Rick Mercer Report as they desperately try to comprehend politics in Canada. Probably best to keep them on Corner Gas and Trailer Park Boys. Possible The Vinyl Cafe.
As a less serious note for online viewing, Jon LaJajoie, Arrogant Worms are great comedy musical choices for Canada Day.
Ahhh Canada my boy, where has the time gone. 145 years ago you came into this world, seems like only yesterday we were killing the Indians, and segregating the french........ Those were the days.

Absolutely! The guy was probably the greatest spy to ever live. At least in regards to his influence on the intelligence community such as his roles in MI5 and MI6 and the role he played in placing his friend William J. Donovan in a position in American intelligence to form the OSS, which eventually became the CIA. Incredible story.
Also being one of the influences for the James Bond character is pretty awesome too.
Oh and he was from Winnipeg. Awesome. They should make an actual movie (not a made for tv one) about this guy.
But General Sir Arthur Curry is probably my favorite Canadian from history. He reinvented how wars were fought in WW1, when most of the British Empire were still fighting with old tactics (such as attacking in waves), by using the Canadian army as a cohesive force to showcase his tactical superiority. He even introduced engineers to the battlefield to properly calculate battlefield layouts and enemy artillery positions(probably the most key thing in their high rate of successful engagements) It is a shame we dont even learn about this guy in school when he was the greatest military leader Canada has ever had.
Hey everyone, I am part of the Cerimonial Guard that goes onto Parliment Hill ( the guys with the big bear hats and red uniforms) and did the parade. It was a very good feeling and was also VERY cool. looking from the inside out. Hope everyone has a great Canada Day eh!!!! :D

You've declared war on the US by sending us Beiber and Nickleback.
In Quebec this would also be known as "Movement day" since we don't really celebrate it. All of our apartment lease end on the 1st of July so we all move around, it's a pretty funny day especially when it's raining like it has in the last few days.
But in all seriousness... I know lots of Canadians and they feel closer to me than any other national group. I don't like being one of those Americans that calls Canada "The 51st state" or somesuch nonsense, but between the people, to me at least, it feels like its just BARELY a bigger gap in culture than from one state to another here in good the ol' USA. Honestly I have more in common with a lot of Canadians than I do Americans because I love hockey so much. Every time I meet someone from Canada I get all anxious and have to ask "Whats your favorite hockey team? Who's your favorite player? Do you like hockey? I like hockey. A lot. Wanna be friends?" Then I give them a good creepy smile <3 Canada even when its not Canada day. <3 Canadians, Happy Canada Day!!!!
But also... RUSH. Rush all the way man... even if hockey didn't exist I would thank Canada at large for creating Rush for the world.
Awesome Canadians: Alex Lifeson Niel Peart Geddy Lee Joe Sakic(#1) Patrick Roy Sydney Crosby Adam Foote Wayne Gretzky Too many other awesome hockey players to list (I like hockey ok... sorry those are the only Canadians I know besides Rush)

I'm Canadian, and Canada is hogwash. We are taxed so badly, it is a bit nuts. Canada, where you are free to do whatever you want, as long as you have a license, insurance, the permit, licence plate/decal, paid your fee, etc etc....
Fun part: Statistical fact. The further you are from the Nations Capital of Ottawa, the higher the unemployment rate. The closer to the politians you are, the lower the unemployment rate. Ottawa has one the lowest unemployment rate in Ontario, amd in Canada.
Man, this sorta kinda a little bit makes me miss Canada day back at home. My family used to have a BBQ with my grandparents and just sit on the deck and shoot the breeze. With my grandmother passing away 2 weeks ago and me in South Korea, times like that don't happen anymore. Its the little things we do that really make the day important.
god how I miss BBQ's with the family. those amazing burgers my father used to make, Have not had ones of those since last summer. its hard to find a real burger in Korea, not those crappy ones they sell at mcD's a real burger, with meat that resembles a bit more than a CD. I would kill for one of those right now.
