![]() Not only being badass for having the manliest of manly nicknames, "Pips" (if you'd translate it it should be something like "squeak", it is onomatopoetic for the sound a mouse would make) also shot down 101 enemy planes during WW2. Now that's a lot, but not that much in comparison to other Aces(seriously, there were 14 Germans alone with more than 200 credited kills, and god knows how many Allied pilots could handle their fighter aircraft famously well, I bet there were a few). The thing is, this is one of only two(the other being his lesser-known wingman) German pilots who flew an attacking mission on the invading forces at D-Day. While probably still drunk and hung over from an ironically held binge-drinking-celebration about the withdrawal of his whole flying squad from the front the day before. And they motherfucking survived flying across the beach and invasion fleet with probably thousands of anti-aircraft guns from the shipspointed at them. This is what I call a gauntlet run. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Priller

Roman legionnaires are a close second though, as they truly were a military force ahead of their time by at least a few hundred years.

From the same site, an article about Hussars: http://www.badassoftheweek.com/hussars.html ![]() While they have a long and illustrious string of asskickings under their heavyweight championship belts, the Winged Hussars' finest hour came during the epic Battle of Vienna in 1683, when the Ottoman Turkish armies were busting nuts across Eastern Europe looking to conquer all of Christendom. With the main body of the Holy Roman Imperial army completely surrounded and besieged by over 200,000 Turkish warriors, the badass Polish King Jan Sobieski led the single hugest and most balls-out cavalry charge in history. Their wings fluttering and zipping like creepy, spear-flinging birds of prey, three thousand Winged Hussars plowed into the Turkish force, driving them back, plundering their supply train, and driving the Turks from the field. That's a pretty effective fighting force if you ask me :-)
