it could have been any old phone
is it just the sound of the ring that would have prevented the suicide?
was he hypnotized and the ring of a phone would have broken the trance and when he realized wtf was going on he said 'oh no' and splattered all over the pavement?

He knew there were telephones in the building with telephone service. But he wasn't thinking about it until he heard one ring.

did the man live alone was the man under the influence of any substances was the man in new york city

well, it's the fact that it's a phone ringing, not the sound in and of itself. If he could've known a phone was ringing without sound, the result would be the same.
