Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Hyperbola. It's under control and meltdown is no longer feared

Why would you post stuff that happened 7 hours ago, it is very confusing for people to stay up to date with the situation like this..
Yeah it didn't match the pace of this thread and was awkward, but its still funny to criticize someone for posting a 7hr old news as being 'too old'. Internet spoils you.
ForceStarcraft did a special youtube video on this. The Starcraft community should help by donating to NGOs or, like Force did, inform people on how they can help.

There is also that nuclear issue in Fukusima , a reactor (maybe more) exploded a few hours ago. I hope it won't affect too much Japaneses who are already weakened by the tsunami and the earthquake.

Who's teaching those people to think that way? Fox? Do they even know their country dropped nuclear bombs on civillian target? I guess crimes against humanity is nothing when compared to crimes against the US

I understand people saying "they're just trolling" and stuff, but what is really sad to me is the fact that a majority of these people probably wholeheartedly believe what they are saying. It's god damned sickening that we have such ignorant fools make up such a large portion of our population in the US.
Does anyone know what's really happening with the reactor?
Some people say radiation is on it's way to the west coast, so you should make sure you take iodine. Some people are saying that he media is blowing the whole thing up out of proportion, and everything is actually under control.
What is it? Does anyone even know? I live on the west coast, so if something is happening, I would rather be prepared for it...

God damn the media.

3:18am Reassuring news from the UN - the risk from Japan's radiation leak appears to be "probably quite low". The World Health Organisation's Gregory Hartl said:
At this moment it appears to be the case that the public health risk is probably quite low. We understand radiation that has escaped from the plant is very small in amount.
3:00am Any radioactive pollution from the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant will likely be blown out over the Pacific Ocean, thanks to favourable winds, says the French Nuclear Saety Authority.
About that nuclear power plant. The images of the explosion was not the reactor containment blowing off. Earlier reports said it was a building not housing the reactor, newer reports said it is housing a reactor. Since i have seen the insides of a scientific reactor and how the building was constructed, i am inclined to believe the first reports, leading me to the believe that the explosion was not caused by a reactor meltdown.
HOWEVER, since reports on the issue are scarce and most of the reporters covering it have no education on how nuclear reactors work, one of them might indeed have melted. It SHOULD have been more visible in that case, but you can't rule it out.

It's fine. The media is blowing it out of proportion. The steam with the nitrogen isotope they released yesterday is probably on its way to the west coast, true, but that has a half-life of 5 seconds, so it's harmless.

Radiation has leaked, most likely due to controlled pressure release. The amount of radiation leaked was significant, but nothing to seriously worry about even on the west coast. There will be no major fallout judging from what we know now. Just wash your hands, wash your food.
If you are really scared keep your windows shut and put (preferably wet) towels under the doors and wash them when you remove them. Remember to dispose them and not use them afterwards. Do this for the next 4-6 weeks at least and you should be fine even if the reactors need to release even more steam in the next days.

If the reactor is running to hot, it is my understanding that the steam probably will contain heavier isotopes as well. I will look at some books and see what i can find out.

unbelievable, remembering the hiroshima and nagasaki war crime

cross your fingers guys.
You are correct. The explosion did not occur in the reactor itself or in the inner containment vessel. It was the outer containment building which houses the inner vessel and the reactor. It was a Hydrogen explosion and not caused by some hypothetical "meltdown" that is reported throughout the media. As far as I know it was a pumping system failure that led to the explosion.
The reactor will have suffered core damage and some parts of the core might have melted, but that doesn't mean that the reactor will spontaneously explode at some point. What it does mean is that the reactor is pretty much destroyed and not recoverable any more. Especially since they are planning to flood the reactor with sea water, which will pretty much ensure that the reactor is a complete loss (that's at least 1-2 billion in damages right there).
Edit: Unless the plant was scheduled to shut down anyway, because it was fairly old.
