Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Talking to my friend(physicist at Tokyo U) on skype in the Tokyo Area and he says the people aren't really worried about the nuclear power plant since it's shut down and the reactions aren't happening for another Chernobyl to happen; since it's a light water, even if it overheats there isn't going to be an explosion. People are more scared of more major quakes/aftershocks happening.

This is Minamisanriku, a port town of about 17,000 with 10,000 currently unaccounted for. Really tragic

There's a number of before/after images from along the coast in this video, including Minamisanriku first

Thank you for posting this. The before/after images are absolutely horrifying.

holy SHIT. how does that work then. i mean the water levels will eventually go back to normal.. right?

And then you have to pump out the rest. Dreading to see what's beneath the water...

That guy had a pretty interesting case for the situation being worse than it seems... Sigh. How I crave truth.

Still no sleep for me, it seems. .__.;

I don't think so, friends in Tokyo watching the news and they said there wasn't any mention about increasing the evac zone to even larger

Depending on when the clip was from, there was a reporter earlier today for the BBC (Nick Ravenscroft) who wanted to approach the area but found that people were being warned off from entering the surrounding area from about 60km out as an extra precaution, while the evacuation zone itself was 20km.

I don't see any updates on the bbc site regarding that, so it seems likely you just saw that older clip?

Okay might have misunderstood him then - but it really sounded like 60 not like the 20 to which it was increased earlier. Didnt find anything about it elsewhere either so it probably was a mistake either from him or from me.

@asha, it wasn't a reporter but a nuclear expert (or something similar - cought the interview in the middle), but it probably was this warning zone then and not the evac zone.

there already were explosions....

Television pictures showed a massive blast at one of the buildings of the Fukushima-Daiichi plant, about 250km (160 miles) north-east of Tokyo.

the explosions weren't at the core itself, it was to the pumping system

An explosion that sent white smoke rising above the Fukushima Daiichi plant Saturday afternoon buckled the walls of a concrete building that surrounded one of the plant's nuclear reactors, but did not damage the reactor itself, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.
The explosion was caused, he said, by a failure in a pumping system as workers tried to prevent the reactor's temperature from racing out of control.
While Edano said radiation levels appeared to be falling after the explosion, the government nevertheless ordered an expanded evacuation of the area around the Daiichi plant, as well as a second facility where the cooling system had failed -- the Fukushima Daini plant

In a geographic time-frame, stuff like this happens ALL the time. We've just been lucky the last couple of hundred years and even then we've had stuff like haiti, indonesian tsunami, san francisco quake, montserrat, hurricane katrina, eyjafjallajökull etc etc. And we've got such brief lives (and strange memories) that things like this always seem distant unless its happening right now.

It's probably not a hell of a long time till we get a meteor strike or the earths axis flips too. Just gotta hope we've moved on to deal with stuff like that properly by the time they occur.

Edit: Also the media hype over potential nuclear meltdown, even when all available information shows the situation is under control, is disgusting. Constant references to chernobyl when the situation is FAR from similar. They're like giddy kids high on sugar seeing more candy coming.

I really lose respect for a large portion of the media in situations like this. Their one saving grace is that they may motivate people to help.

Don't mind them, they're a very small minority that is DROWNED by the number of Americans that actually do care. You'll find that there are many more people deriding them as idiots than those trumpeting the same anti-japan message.

One of the trains on the Senseki line that disappeared last night was found derailed this morning by helicopter. Seems like the passengers were rescued

Why be sad? I use the internet most of the time just to laugh at ignorance, not to get annoyed by trolling. There's no way those people coulda forgotten nuking hiroshima and nagasaki, its like the only wartime use of nukes and one of the most well known series of events taught in schools in any western nation.

And that a little over 2000 US military personell were killed with no lasting damage, versus over 200,000 civilians with long term high radiation and increased cancer levels and birth deformities. Then there was the firebombing of japanese cities which killed even more civilians than the nukes at H + N.

They're fooling nobody, dont let trolls get you down bro!

Oh, my God. I can't believe people. Are we such terrible beings that there are those who revel at the thought of the suffering of people? Of countless people who are just ordinary people like us? The...I am at a loss of words, and feeling crushed.

However, I do realize that there are competent people out there helping, and for them I hold in my heart all my hopes for humanity. Stay strong, everyone in Japan!

Why would you post stuff that happened 7 hours ago, it is very confusing for people to stay up to date with the situation like this..
