Crisis in Japan - Page 87

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Aomori as in Aomori-shi (the city) or in the greater Aomori Prefecture?

As far as I know that area is widely without power and communications and was hit relatively hard (at least in the coastal areas).

Your best bet might be the Google Person Finder at http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com/?lang=en unless you have other contact opportunities in the region.

Edit: Maybe someone that is in Japan at the moment has better information?

Don't quote one single forum and call it "China" please. My Chinese friends are quite shocked by the Earthquake.

No need to post information not related to the EQ like this. This is just some stupid trolling post(I can read chinese, and i just read the original chinese thread) on a random chinese forum. I really don't a flame war going up and derail this thread because of this.

"China" as a whole might not be, you have 1) no idea where in china those people are. Central China still pretty much hates Japan*, whilst Hangzhou/Shanghai aren't (japanese business people had free visas.......) as much (my cousin likes Japanese stuff, and he's in China

Also. a site talking about cars isn't the best indicator if the country is "celebrating" the earthquake.

That'll be like... a couple of users from <insert country name here> goes to the same topic on Teamliquid (making a new topic), and saying "yay japan is fucked" or something stupid like that.

1. that doesn't mean Teamliquid as a whole is celebrating
2. that doesn't the <insert country name here> as a whole is celebrating.

*: at least when I went to China with my parents a few years ago

Since I don't speak Japanese, I can't really check the Japanese twitter sources without falling back on Google Translate.

This is the Twitter account of the city: @AomoriShi

While some of the tweets are pretty ambiguous because of the automated translation, you can see that they are still reporting power outage issues, so that might explain why you can't reach your friend easily.

But I can't really do much more, so it would be great if someone who speaks Japanese could help you.

The last thing we heard was that they shut down the reactor and are preparing to flood it with sea water

BBC:
"Ian Hore-Lacy of the World Nuclear Association told the BBC he believes the situation at the nuclear power plant - where sea water is being used to cool the reactor core - is under control"

Reuters:
"The IAEA says the operator of the plant has confirmed that the primary containment vessel is intact following this morning's blast."

"The IAEA says it has been told by Japan that levels of radioactivity near the Fukushima No. 1 plant have fallen in recent hours"

That pretty much sums up the latest news

BBC: Ian Hore-Lacy of the World Nuclear Association told the BBC he believes the situation at the nuclear power plant - where sea water is being used to cool the reactor core - is under control: "The point is that the heat, decay heat from the fuel drops off very rapidly. So after an hour, an hour following the shut down, it's down to about 2 or 3% I think. And after 24 hours it's down to half a per cent. So the amount of heat you've got to cope with right now is a small fraction of what there was initially."

140.000 people evacuated in the surrounding area. Japanese government not giving out any real info. Most of the german news/experts expect a meltdown. Common condense Japanese dont give enough informations.

Man I have never heard of a quake with such a magnitude, keep in mind the Richter scale is exponential, a quake of 8 on the Richter scale is 10 times the intensity of one with a 7 rating. I hope all the best for those in Japan, scary stuff.

An earthquake between 8.0-8.9 happens around once a year, rarely do they hit such developed areas or cause Tsunamis. But a similar event happened as recently as 2004, 200,000+ dead http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_and_tsunami.
That was a 9.1-9.3

Last year Chile experienced a 8.8.

Luckily Japan has been preparing for an earthquake of this magnitude for years, so the death toll will hopefully be much lower than 2004.

Radiation sensors across the globe should be put into a global network with results available online, it is really not that hard to do and would end all the useless speculation and fear-mongering. If anything happens, everyone will be informed. Might cause panic, but I prefer that over ignorance.

edit: hell give me the readout from a good gamma ray spectrometer in the vicinity of the power plant and I'll tell what came out of that thing, the lack of free information in this world is frustrating
