Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |

"Port Alberni" means we're at the end of a long, narrow inlet. We've had major tsunamis before. We're on LEGIT warning. If even a mild wave hits the coast it will grow to huge proportions on its way up the inlet. Good luck my friend. The Island has borne the brunt of many tsunamis in the past, hope all is well on the West Coast in the morning. Is it going to be a high tide this morning?
It will be high tide at 3:37 AM (About an hour and 15 minutes). Port Alberni is the only city in BC that has a tsunami warning system, so everybody in the danger zone should be woken up if it's imminent.

That confuses me, I've lost my other link, but we were well in the danger zone. Sources seem to be divided (even in the States).
EDIT: NVM, not confused. Your link hasn't been updated in over a week.

Ah thanks, good to know. I guess the nuclear emergency state is an overreaction then? Or a way to keep their political options open for... whatever they might use it for. It's a panic right now. I guess they don't have enough information, so we can't say it's an overreaction right now... I'd like to know if the security injections are working. If not, there could be a fusion of the core, but it shouldn't happen with nuclear security norms as they are. I dare say it will not happen, in fact. Only if the people don't fuckin screw up like they did with Tokaimura in 1999.
All nuclear plants around the area would recieve a warning if there would be anything toxic etc. So i doubt there isn't any catastrofal damage. :-)

There was a nuclear power plant disaster due to negligence in Ibaraki prefecture of Japan about 15 years ago, which also happens to be an expected epicenter of more aftershocks.
Nuclear power plants are safe. The people running them are what worry me.

On AJE was said they had heard on the news and that along with being unable to reach the remote islands they just started warning people on the coast. Still no TV or radio warnings.

Dear god please stay online. I'll be up for the forseeable future.
Edit: I mean, unless you need to evacuate or help people or something obviously...

what does fusion of the core imply? an explosion?
The fusion is the worst thing that can happen. It's what happened with Tchernobyl, but they really did screw up everything for that to happen. :/ A fusion is the transformation in corium (you can say in lava) of the combustion material (uranium, fission products, etc...), meaning it's highly radioactive and corrosive. An explosion of hydrogen or vapor can happen, and that could break the walls of the power-plants, meaning radiation would spread.

Bank of Japan has its work cut out for them, I just heard on CNN they vowed to do whatever necessary to keep the economy going.

We should be okay, Port Alberni has a pretty steep slope up away from the harbour so if the warning system works (in what I think is an unlikely event of a tsunami actually hitting) people can basically walk out of the danger zone.
I don't want it to sound like we're totally boned. All I'm saying is that IF a wave does hit, we're a pretty shitty spot to live.

Well Im ok if anyone was wondering. -tired grin-
They say the four local nuclear reactors have safely been shut down.
Biggest thing right now seems to be the tsunami. I hope no TLers living up north near the coast. Very frightening.
Worst quake I personally have experienced. Very very freaky. Thought I was fainting at the start. Took a few seconds to realize it was the world that was wrong and not me.

This is crazy. Be safe TL'ers in Japan!

holy crap the video footage is pretty crazy. my friend's going to university of tokyo, wonder how that part of the country is doing

Idk how to swim so that footage is like a nightmare to me! Be safe everyone.

It's weird, they're not saying much about Tokyo.
Back during the Kobe earthquake about 20 years ago people were outraged by the fact that the press kept saying "Is Tokyo okay??" even though there's pure devastation happening in Kobe.

swimming in mud/debris = bad fast water = impossible to swim
