Nevertheless, I would never make such a bet, as anyone who claims to know when the second coming will happen, is talking out of their ass. Any Christian who actually reads the Bible should know that no one knows the hour or the day. It's precisely therefore we need to go through life as though the hour is near, and remain vigil. To not grow tired of good deeds, or too comfortable with the luxury of this world. How can you love your neighbour if you buy a purse or watch for tens of thousands of USD, rather than feed the hungry? Or buy several houses for yourself, rather than house the homeless? There's always something we can do to help others and to create a better world. But not if we grow docile. The thought of being on the alert can help that way, so long as one don't go too far in the other direction and forget to live at all :-P | ||

partially joking A question I sometimes ponder: The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that entropy (disorder) tends to increase in an isolated system. Left alone, things naturally decay, spread out, or become more random. So why does life become more organized? It seems like life violates this law. An explanation to explain this would be that the Earth is not an isolated system. Earth receives a constant flow of energy from the Sun. Individually, organisms also take in energy from food or chemicals. This influx of energy allows local systems (like cells, bodies, ecosystems) to decrease their own entropy (become more ordered), while increasing the total entropy of the surroundings. Based on this, everything will deteriorate. We are but a vapor in the grand scheme of things. At least from an entropy perspective. There is still the conservation of mass and energy. If entropy is constantly increases as our universe seemingly expands forever trying to reach an equilibrium that will never end unless there is a boundary, the energy and matter that reside becomes from a human perspective, useless. I will confess, I believe there is more than matter and energy in this world/universe or rather reality. What if energy and mass can be generated by means of something outside of our world/universe? Practically, we go about with the laws of thermodynamics being consistent as it has been. But I like to ponder as we (humans) have seen so little of the universe in time and space as a collective, let alone individually. | ||
