Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

That would be impossible to determine now, but it sounds like just a turbine may have been damaged.

In Fukushima-ken, the one next to Miyagi where the tsunami really hit. We had to huddle under desks and there was a real worry that things would start falling - ceiling suffered damage, chairs and desks tipped. Outside the roads are cracked, water is off and lots are without electricity.

To those who are saying learn to swim - with all due respect piss off. Lots of deaths confirmed and I guarantee lots more to come - the wall of debris and water was sweeping away houses, cars, trucks, boats, bridges. It's not a wave of water you can fucking surf, it's an avalanche. Fires raging and nobody knows what's happening to most of MIyagi-ken. Feeling numerous aftershocks - think we're up to around 20 now, some shake more things off shelves, others just shake us around a bit

Things are more than a little tense. Even this far from the quake lots of damage to homes and buildings, and people have been evacuated to disaster centres. Thoughts going to those who have loved ones in Miyagi-ken. As I write this another aftershock - wonder if it will continue into the night?
You live the life you choose.

I don't mean this in a bad way, but please don't bring that up. It makes this thread impossible to look at.
I'm sorry. I hope everything is OK.

As others have mentioned, this number is largely irrelevant since unfortunately it won't even be in the ballpark once rescue workers continue their search and rescue operations. The number will likely be in the hundreds or in the thousands. With any luck those trapped in flodded areas will be evacuated successfully in the coming hours.
I'm going to sleep, let me get some of that carpet.

People on the west coast/Hawaii, please take this seriously, you will probably be hearing tsunami warnings all night, the tsunamis are expected to hit the west coast at around 8:00 am PST, if not a little earlier.

Indeed, and keep in mind japan is superprepared and supersafe on this subject, if this has happend in any other country int he region the deathtoll could have been 100000s
Leave it to ................... Luck!!

Aftershocks will likely continue for weeks, but at reduced frequency and severity.

Watching thislive stream makes me feel incredibly safe about visiting Tokyo later this year.

The Japanese people and authorities look so prepared and ready to act under these circumstances. If anyone knows of a legit donation link please, let me know.

All the best for anyone or anyone with relatives in Japan

Well how was the warning and anticipation about the earthquake? Were people given enough warning to evacuate streets and what not?
I asked my friend how the ratio at a party was, he replied. "Let's just say for every guy there was two dudes."

Anyone update on Hawaii and what's going on there? Particularly interested in Oahu.

Cooling on one reactor is not working at one of the nuclear stations. Water can't be pumped in to help cool it.
What's been said on NHK with interview with some gov guy right now.

This is what my friend had to say via FB
My one day off in a two-week span and there's a tsunami warning! Sticking it out with an Entourage marathon at Mick's.

Beach areas evacuated. Hawaii is probably the most well prepared place in the world for tsunamis.

More details on the "nuclear emergency" on AJE now.

The reactor has undergone emergency shutdown (as planned), but the cooling system failed afterwards because they don't have enough power operate the pumps. There is currently no danger of radioactive leakage at the moment.
