Crisis in Japan - Page 29

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Look, I'm Japanese and the majority of my friends are Korean and I've had this discussion a million times.

Please stop guilting us like that. I can't bring those people back, and as much as I'd like to if I could, I can't apologize with any genuineness for something that someone did before I was even born.

Its not nearly as big as the 2004 tsunami but its still pretty large. The 2004 tsunami was 9.1, this doesnt sound like much of a difference but it actually means that the 2004 one was 3 times bigger. I heard that only 1 person has died so far and I hope that the fatalities stays minimal.

Also, the warning message on google is scary:
"Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others. Waves expected over the next few hours, caused by 8.9 earthquake in Japan."

Well how was the warning and anticipation about the earthquake? Were people given enough warning to evacuate streets and what not?

It's impossible to outrun the waves along a lot of the coasts. People are being told to move to the third floor of concrete buildings.

Any earthquake above M6 or so has the potential to kill hundreds or thousands of people depending on population densities, infrastructure and earthquake preparedness.

Japan is understandably obsessively prepared for earthquakes (many buildings are prepared for M7 to M8) -- but there's a limit to what can be done.

Also of concern is the fact that while everyone is physically prepared for earthquakes, I'm not sure the economy is. It might affect all of Asia.

I wonder how much time passed by between the issue of the tsunami warning for the japanese east coast (if there was any) and the time when the waves actually hit the coast. Does anybody know?

One more question, because i dont quite understand it. Not the earthquake itself is the problem, but the tsunami that was caused by it?
It does not need to be fun to be fun.

I heard less than 1 hour for the areas affected the worst.
Y'know sometimes people ask me y'know like "What's your religion and stuff?" And I'm like "y' know it's like RTS." Uh, and they're like, "What's that?" And I'm like, "Y'know it's kinda like, kinda like Buddism."

This is crazy. Japan acted like a barrier for Korea so we're not hit at all. No aftershocks, no waves. I can't believe this is happening.

It this correct? I thought the scale means that 9 is twice as strong as 8?

It's a logarithmic scale. 9 is 10 times stonger than 8.

I don't know how to ask this question...

I understand Japan is really prepared when it comes to Quakes as they are so prone... but the images im seeing of this Tsunami are catastrophic. So what I want to ask is... were Tsunamis part of the worst case scenario? I don't believe (unless my mind is slipping) I've experience a tsunami affecting Japan as heavily as this in my lifetime.

Just really concerned on how well the government / nation can recover. Were Tsunami's part of the worst case scenario?
