I don't really anticipate a huge response from SK at this point in time. The grievances are piling up (the sinking of the Cheonan being a recent one) and I believe SK will fight back at some point, but I feel that this is not the straw that will break the camel's back.

The lack of foreign intervention in this is rather appalling, though. I'm straining to remember how the UN sanctions work; would China opting against sanctions halt or limit the ability of the UN in this scenario?

China is a permanent member of the security council as a winner of WWII. They can veto anything.

People, China is one of N Korea most important ally, they arent going to do anything about it. (http://www.cfr.org/publication/11097/chinanorth_korea_relationship.html)

I dont want a war to start but S Korea has to do something.

Numbers are up to 16 injured. We're talking civilians here, NK is not going to get off easy this time...

Would halt a binding security council resolution on the matter yes.

SK can't do anything just on the merit of the fact that North Korea will blow the hell out of Seoul if South Korea actually responds with war.

looks to me like they're just having fun seeing how far they can stretch this.

lol!! >_>

damn, this is really scary

It's scary until you scroll down, read about us achieving immortality, and realizing its pretty much a joke .

Can I borrow your time machine?

Not to get off topic but Baba Vanga has made MANY predictions that never came true in the past.

And then they magically disappeared off of most websites after nothing happened.

I was talking about him saying we will NEVER achieve immortality.

Hundreds of years ago the thought of putting a man on the moon and bringing him back was impossible. People even thought man flying through air with machines was impossible.

Point is people shouldn't be so closed minded.

Now comes the time for N. Korea to try to make good off their ultimate bluff, and S. Korea and perhaps some of the rest of the world to call them on it? Eep. Hopefully they're not that completely irrational / they never had the resources to genuinely establish that kind of threat in the first place. ..Maybe North Korea will finally become integrated into the modern world. ..Would be interesting to live through some sort of war times, if not as a soldier.

Yes, as they are a permanent member of the security council, the only body within the UN that has the power to do anything other than recommend shit, and as a permanent member China has the power to veto anything. Don't see it going down that way though since NK is clearly in the wrong here.

They have a pretty big get out of jail free card in the form of their northern neighbor.

Sadly that's not how it works. This isn't really anything groundbreaking and isn't something the South can risk war over.

This attack is particularly troubling compared to the little skirmishes that always happened from before. For one thing, the skirmishes were only amongst ships with minimal casualties. NK has never directly attacked land until now.

But they're not as idiotic to believe that SK would want to start a war in the first place. If they believed it was an invasion attempt they would have targetted the actual naval force, and with greater vigour. This is just another muscle flex, testing the waters and seeing what they can get away with.

But would China really condone such an act, remember what happened when N. Korea tested a nuke underground even China was angry.

That's not technically correct, The Peoples Republic of China became a permanent member of the security council in 1971 after the Republic of China (Taiwan) was acknowledged to not actually be a good representative for the people of actual China proper.

S.K. has to put up with this? They're really just kicking S.K. because there won't be any significant retaliation.
