English Lit. focuses on Western canon and ignore the rest of the world (thanks Bloom). Not to mention the inherent stupidity of grading someone's essay that is crammed into a time limit, with no/little revisions, and etc. When was the last time you wrote a good college paper under those conditions? Comp Sci was just easy and I had to do something to pass the time.
Pretty much every single one of my polisci exams and tons of my history exams were like this. And trust me, getting As in those exams were way harder than getting 5s on those APs.

My history and polisci exams were also like this too, but it doesn't mean they were good. The hardest class I had from the broad history/social science field was one that didn't use tests, but rather full 5+ page topical essays to substitute for tests. Which is what the DBQs attempt to do but fail horribly although Euro History's criteria/rubric is much more stringent and closer to the college level than US History's for APs.
The profs I had were pretty lenient on my exams for history/polisci/international relations when it came to in-class open responses, I used bulleted paragraphs in a lot them. You weren't expected to make a deep argument and the questions suggested just as much. I wasn't expected to write a full fledged paper and I didn't bother to, none of the people who got As did, simply because if you do, you'll never finish on time.

Some teachers argue that taking the exam and failing looks better to colleges than to not even take the test after taking an AP class. I have no idea if that really holds any value, but it may be the reason why they do what they do. Still, if you're gonna take an AP test you should at least try your best on it. Why challenge yourself by taking an AP class and not put in the effort to study for the end of the year test?

So if im understanding this right, you have pay to take a test that may let you skip classes in college (saving them money) wow genius thinking by the college boards.

They grades are irrelivent for the application process. Getting a five might mean that you got an A which is what matters to them, or getting an 800 on the sat 2, but that five doesnt count for anything until you are accepted.
Lolwut? So your argument is: there's no way schools are looking at AP scores or else I would've gotten into more ivy league schools? Notwithstanding the fact that you didn't even spell "ivy" correctly, how can you possibly believe this? Competition at this tier of schools obviously will not come down to who got more 5s on AP tests. However, if you get 3s on some of your APs, how can you believe that this doesn't reflect on your ability, in the same way that a lower grade on the SAT reflects on your ability?
As has already been pointed out, the fact that not all schools offer as many AP tests as another is not a concern in this discussion. Your high school sends a school profile outlining their course offerings so the admissions people at the schools you apply to will be able to figure out the rigor of your high school workload relative to what is offered at your school. This is especially useful to those students who self-study for AP exams that aren't offered by their high school; wouldn't you agree that getting a 5 on an exam your high school did not offer a class for is especially notable?
As a response to one of your previous posts, I do know what I am talking about: I've been through this process before, and I probably applied to many of the same schools you did.
EDIT:
Just to prove that college applications did ask for AP scores when I was going through this (last year), below are screenshots of the applications I submitted to my colleges, with my scores removed. The first is MIT's application, the second is the Common App's, which is accepted by most, if not all ivy league schools.

Why would they ask for information they couldn't use?

From the limited amount I understand (as a California student who applied into the UC system), fibster is right.
Which also makes me wonder why people who took the APs with the intention to fail even took them in the first place. Great work wasting your parents' money - getting ready for the inevitable tuition costs I see =[.

My friend worked at MITs admissions office during her freshman year, she told me that they don't care about AP tests at all in 99% of the cases - she handles records and she said that she'd rarely get a request from the adcom for the AP scores of an applicant.

I know a guy that had a exam(big one) and had to write about LAZYNESS

I'm reviving this thread for AP's this year, which started today. I have my own little story to contribute to get the ball rolling here.
So I was taking the AP US Government and Politics Exam after self studying the material. And I was fairly confident and finished my FRQ portion with about 15 minutes to spare. I figured I would sleep, but out of my OCD tendencies, I felt I had to go back into my answer sheet and do something. So I wrote this:
Hi AP Grader
I think we both know you should be ignoring this.
and this.
I don't know if any of you have done something like this/intend to do this sometime in the next 2 weeks. Share your stories or plans of screwing with AP graders. And if you can think of an amazing idea, I might try to implement it during any of my other ap's these next 2 weeks.
Also, I hope I don't get screwed for the above message XD.

I had to pay for all 6 of my exams ($540) :/
So I actually have an incentive to do well... along with possible credits for college next year.

I remember i did this on the HSPA (cause im taking AP Calc, which im srs about):
I tried to reference as much of the intro to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as i could in the writing section essays. I do not regret, even to this day =P

At the same time most AP readers suffer through long hours of the same crap over and over, so anything a little refreshing might brighten their day and make them grade your exam better. Its a long shot, but better to do this than doze off or fret during the extra time you have.
I drew sketches, wrote jokes, song lyrics (older songs that most people would recognize like the Beatles, etc) and got a lot of 5s. It helps you calm down too when you don't take it super srsly...

my SAT essay this year was about my opinion on speech and its effectiveness or what not and i wrote at the end "and seriously, how would you feel if you had never heard Morgan Freeman's voice?"
well at least i got a kick out of it.

i don't know why i did this, but i ended up writing about a gun(of course it was made up, i was bored out of my fucking mind and didn't know what else to write). so a few months later or so they called me up to the office and there was a police officer waiting to talk to me LOLOL, they had contacted my family and told them if i had a gun anywhere inside my room or anything, apparently i had my aunt in tears and my grandma was worried of course. i started to laugh when the police told me about it and i got slightly upset that anyone in my family would think i would have something like that but then again i had an idea of where they were coming from. looking back it at now, it's still funny, but pretty retarded at the same time.

Hmm...time to see how i can screw around on my AP Stat exam tomorrow. Good luck to those taking it :D
