If you tab a few times in the world screen, you should see what civilizations are on the continent, and thus available for interaction.

Haha, in my first game where I Actually knew what I was doing I just had my first goblin raid:
I had all my leather armour and everything ready but I had no metal for weapons so my dwarfs marched out to fight with wooden training swords (my bad lol).
Anyway this one swordsdwarf is fighting with a goblin spearman, keeps hitting the goblin but not really doing any damage, meanwhile the goblin is repeatedly jabbing HER spear into my dwarf's foot. This fight goes on for a good 5 minutes until my dwarf suddenly gets stabbed in her right arm, she loses all motor function in her arm and, as a consequence is forced to drop the sword.
Big. mistake. goblin.
My swordsdwarf, free of wooden toy swords, decides to use her other arm to attack, which has a leather shield, she lunges at the goblin with the shield and proceeds to tear out her brain, the goblin falls over and the dwarf repeatedly smashes her face in with the shield.
Next game I'm equpping everyone with shields and no weapons, Heroics!

Sure I would ideally but again, no metal, and I traded for metal weapons/armour as often as I could but I couldn't get nearly enough.

Nahh man, get yourself some adamantine shields. Most FUN material in the game for blunt weapons! You get to watch as your dwarves charge into battle and throw down on the enemy, dealing out death by 1000 blows.

A better solution is to dig a pound in your fort, connect it to the river so it fills with stuff, block it off with a floodgate and then put grates above it. Your dwarves can fish though it and they won't die, even if a pike or a carp gets in!
Make sure if somebody does get killed by carp/pikes you forbid their bones or you'll lose a bunch of dwarves. Just be prepared for ghosts. Digging the channel right now:p Oh and i found out i was also out of boozeXD Nah you can engrave memorial slabs for them to avoid ghosts. I believe they are crafted by a mason, then engraved with someone with the skills of the same name at a craftdwarves shop. I was totally confused by this at first two, as one of my miners had fallen in lava and then came back to haunt the fortress.

Civilisations can attack across huge distances. If there are no goblins in the whole world then they won´t attack you, but they can travel to your Tundra or Forest if they want to. Biomes are only a restriction for what animals that live there.

Man, my whole 80 dwarf fortress was just taken out by a goblin ambush, those critters are damn tough.
Lesson learned - dont start smithing silver / gold crafts encrusted with precious gems before you have a half decent military

Man. The ghosts are stupid. They just had to introduce unnatural and tedious elements that only served to slow down the game.
Anyone know of a way to mod the game to disable those fuckers?

Make and install some extra coffins in case a death, or several deaths, occur. That, or memorial slabs. Whenever dwarf dies, automatically bury him or install a slab. Ghosts will dissappear then.

Yeah i think it's a pretty good idea to build up a grave area pre-emptively, ghosts are gonna come (and you know they're gonna rise up around the same time you break into a cavern or goblins invade) and it speeds everything up.

Ah balls, my HDD died after just two weeks of usage and I lost a fortress I had spent a lot of time on. >.< fucking Seagate is getting lazy or something. My previous Seagate Barracuda has lasted for almost three years, and I have a 7 year old backup WD drive. man wtffff

Hey guys, can anyone explain to me if I'm missing something with hunting?
I started a new embark with a crossbow and 50 bolts, a hunter with competent ambushing and 2 hunting dogs.
I assign the hunting dogs to the hunter and then they wonder off to hunt, but the hunter uses all 50 crossbow bolts trying to hit a single goose, (he does hit her, the goose's chest has been torn open, it's lungs are hanging out, it has no use of it's legs and I think it's neck is broken), but now it's just hanging in the air (what) bleeding to death slowly.
But that's 50 bolts used to cripple a single goose. Furthermore the dogs are just like 'hurr durr' they follow the hunter but dont actually do anything, why dont the dogs go in for the kill (I'm talking when the goose was on the ground, they just sat behind the hunter and watched)
Any help would be appreciated : )

I'm having similar issues actually, trying to find a decent tutorial vid for this, will link it if I do!

Crossbows are a sort of weapon of attrition. With the combat changes in the 31 versions, everything takes some time to die unless you chop it to pieces or get at its brain... if it has one.

Interesting, I have never had a problem with my Seagate. That really sucks man, oh well, its just a game. Cheer up and begin another fortress!

About hunting.
While ambushing is indeed used by hunters once they close on there prey they will switch to regular combat skill so make sure your Hunter has a decent level in Crossbow use and archery.
My normal start includes only 20 bolts but its enough for a good number of animals because of said skills.

^ I think this is my problem too, i never start with any combat skills as i prefer spending my points elsewhere. Guess its just a case of waiting for the right migrations. Fishing seems less hassle than hunting all in all (and less skill intensive) but i might be wrong.
