Because I generally have 2 "grunts" for each skilled worker in my fort, and if I ever need a bigger army with little notice, I use these guys first.
Is this a bad idea?

Is this a bad idea? 1. Did your dwarves die because of it? a) Yes. Go to 2. b) No. Go to 3. 2. Yes. 3. No. I'm sure it's not the most efficient thing in the world, but w/e. As long as they don't go on murderous rampages because they are tired of hauling barrels or beds, what could be bad about it? :p

I read somewhere in that ultimate newbie guide that you could have something like 1/4th of your population for hauling goods so your precious miners can mine/eat/sleep/etc all the time

I haven't yet played this game yet though. Would it be best for me to get a graphical tile set or is it best to just get used to the ASCII? Can you get to the point where it doesn't matter that its ASCII because you can easily see whats going on in the screen or is it always a clutter? This sort of seems like that part of the matrix where all the green symbols rain down the screen and he exclaims he's so used to it he sees past the symbols lol. If you suggest a graphical tile set, could you also suggest which one? Thanks.

So today a huge dwarf caravan came to visit my settlement...but on the way there, the merchant went berserk and attacked his own axedwarf guard. He got messed up, I claimed all the goods... win/win.

As long as they don't go on murderous rampages because they are tired of hauling barrels or beds, what could be bad about it? :p That's just it, I think it's actually more efficient..... Most of the guys seem to spend 2/3 of their time running around, rather than doing what they're good at. This is especially bad for specialties like miners. If I stop him from running around, and get 2 others who don't have as much skill doing the lifting, then I can get as much done as only having 3 skilled workers doing that job. And, since skills can be hard to come by, and at times you don't need to have 3 highly skilled workers doing that job, I can spread around the labor a lot easier. I haven't seen anyone else manipulate the labor like I have..... Which is why I'm wondering if it's actually a bad idea, and I just don't see the downside.....

If you haven't yet played I would highly recommend looking at the dwarf fortress 'lazy newb pack' It comes ready packaged with a couple of the better tilesets (at least that I've seen, you can choose and it'll load them for you) as well as some handy utilities. Better still, theres an absolutely fantastic set of tutorials (recent ones) up on youtube that'll let you learn the basics in an afternoon. I started myself while the SC2 servers were down the other day and it's already cutting into ladder time. Check it out

I usually disable most, if not all hauling on guys with specified jobs, such as brewers, craftsmen etc, and leave all my masterwork potashmakers and such to do the hauling. Sure, some of my guys might end up having loads of time off, but at least my crafting orders gets executed relatively fast. Only from when I have about 40+ people though - untill you've got that, you'll have to do with what you have. Having 1/4th for hauling only seems about approrpiate, though in a realistic scenario later on, you'll probably be sitting with 2/3rds as haulers.

Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3pg25RPtvM So I downloaded the lazy newb pack and watched his videos up till about 11. Very helpful and useful and I learned lots. However theres a few things I need help with. First of all, the scroll key bindings aren't working. Using + and - doesn't navigate through the menus so I can't scroll down to select different things. Secondly, I'm using phoebus graphics pack. Is there a quick-reference chart or something to help me determine what I'm looking at?

Im so glad more and more people are looking at this game. Once you have a good feel for the game, and aren't scared by the military aspects so much anymore, I highly encourage you to look into some expansion pack mod sets that add many new civilizations, workshops, weapons and materials, all kinds of shit. Basically, this game has been modded to the point where people can just add in items that they want. Some guy didn't like the way that wood was only available through cutting it down, so he added a plant you can grow, and a workshop specifically for turning the plant into usable wood. Plus, most of them greatly increase the rate and savagery of attacks against your little dorfs. Much fun to be had.

I did take a look and it showed a tile.. when I tried to change it to + - it just added the same tile into the slot.. Also, what graphics package do you use? What should I be starting my dwarves with skill and item wise?

My solution has been to use the onscreen keyboard, which most windows machines have built into the computer; its in start>programs>accessories I think. Then you just click plus or minus when you need to. Its annoying and inefficient, but it gets the job done and I don't even notice it anymore.

Then you just click plus or minus when you need to. Its annoying and inefficient, but it gets the job done and I don't even notice it anymore. You don't need to do that, and Razith doesn't need to either. In CptnDuck's two and a half hour long tutorial video, he suggested viewers to download a pack called the Lazy Newb Pack. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0 The Lazy Newb Pack is just a ton of stuff made by other people combined into one for your convenience. But most importantly, it solves the problem you two have with the scrolling. In the Lazy Newb Pack, there are two keybindings that you can alternate between after you install and run it. There's the default keybinding, and the Lazy Newb Pack keybinding. Since most laptop keyboards do not have a numberpad on the right side all by itself, the keys are switched around so you can easily access it. When you press the DFFD download, you will have a page that shows you the hotkeys that have been changed around right at the bottom. ALTERNATE KEYBINDINGS: UP Z LEVEL: "," and "<" DOWN Z LEVEL: "." and ">" Menu Select UP: "-" Menu Select DOWN: "=" Menu Select PAGE UP: "_" (shift + "-") Menu Select PAGE DOWN: "+" (shift + "=") One-Step: "/" Zoom In: "]" (and mouse-wheel) Zoom Out: "[" (and mouse-wheel) Here is the link to Cptnduck's tutorial. He talks about the laptop keybindings at the 4 minute mark.

Well it started out just fine, in fact it got to a point where he slaughtered 4 cow type creatures in less than a minute, and the buchter decided to take the next 5 minutes for a break, and then a drink, and then sleeping....massive corpse pile up. Then I though, well hey, this dude is getting pretty good at killing...let's go kill a giant capabary thinger, shouldn't be too hard since I've killed them with a hunter in a different save. Such a bad idea, I didn't even scratch the thing. First it bit off the dudes left hand, then it proceeded to bite off the dudes right hand. with no hands, and losing the will to live, the fucker rips the rest of his arm off from the shoulder and he bleeds to death. Oh well, I learned enough from that little game.

I give the dwarf up for dead and go about my other business. A few dwarfdays later I look for the ettin again. He's still beating up the same dwarf! But how can this be? Surely the ettin is powerful enough to finish the job quicker than that! Turns out that the ettin ripped the dwarf's cloak off. Then he started using it as a weapon, beating the senseless dwarf over the head with it. For four days straight. This didn't do much damage, but the dazed dwarf could just lie there and take it. The report for the fight was 64 pages long and consisted of the ettin bopping the dwarf with the cloak a number of times, falling over from exhaustion and having a nice nap before resuming the, um, beatdown. Eventually I took pity on everyone involved and sent out my other soldiers.
