That´s why I don´t let mothers with babies into the danger room anymore...
A healthy sacrifice here and there is a good thing, might be bad for morale in the short term but i like to think it keeps them on their toes.
Once i have my pet dragon i'll need to work out a way to feed lazy / disobedient dwarves to him one at a time without letting it loose in the fort. I need some kind of trap door i think....
It will have to be carefully constructed, the usual aray of doors and floodgates won´t work, although you could probably drop them down from above quiet effectively, since Dragons don´t fly yet, at least as far as I remember.
Dont dig all the way from your fortress if it's far, it shouldn't take too long just to tunnel down from one side and up the other (assuming you dont have tech for a bridge)

I commanded my dwarfs to make a bridge, but none showed up to do the work.

Is one of the premade starts good to use? or can one you suggest what skills to get / items to take?
I used the 2011 one, and watched the video tutorial, even then I am overwhelmed by the amount of stuff.
It is a lot easier now, but still it can get confusing as hell.
But! I have FOOD!, I started crafting stuff and am generally well. I need to train a military, but already have some fortifications, which is nice, but I don't know if they will last me an attack.

Watch this video, it has helped me a lot and I use this setup myself. I'd recommend you watch the whole series but this one will answer your question nicely

Well I just mean how many miners, growers, leaders, crafters etc to take and what items are good to take.
When you say the 2011 one what do you mean? is that one of the preset options?
