People weren't joking when they said the learning curve for this was vertical.

Sedimentary layers aren't guaranteed to have coal or iron in the latest versions. There seem to be entire worlds lacking one or the other, even. Keep looking. As for fuel, wood turns into charcoal and deep down you may find another source of heat.

Check out the video tutorials linked earlier in the thread, they should help you out a lot and they're pretty easy to follow, you'll be set in no time. in fact, using these I was pretty surprised how quickly you can get into it.

I´ve played DF for a long time and I still check it to refresh, especially when trying out another industry. The first hurdle after simple designations is getting the basics of industry, (mason, carpenter, brewery, kitchen) and farming done, after that you can keep your dwarves alive, giving you time to learn the rest.

My dwarves can mine the top one, and walk on the middle one. I can build stairs in the middle one and mine the bottom one. So how do I get at the middle one so as to like build a moat or something? Also, unless you want huge amounts of unnecessary happy fun, DO NOT mine adamantine. Its kind of a bit more confusing then that but only if you think about it too hard. You can mine the top one, but you can also mine out the middle one and each will have a proper roof and floor. Although to make it so that there is no floor on the top one you can channel it D --> H. There will be a slope upwards on the middle one which if you just want it to be a pit per say you can remove the slope with D --> Z. Channeling is the most efficient way to mine as it removes 2 levels but you can only get 1 rock from both levels.

Will there be coal somewhere in there or can there be none? I've got all the iron ore and flux I can ever want now though. You can use charcoal as a replacement fuel, 1 as apart of the reaction and 1 as to fuel the whole process. Magma is useful as it will cut down that reaction by 1 as it replaces the fuel for the process. EDIT- And to actually answer original question. Yes it should be in there but it is up to chance, and it is possible for there to be none.

Drawbridges are good too, you can crush almost anything with them :-) Sometimes I punish disloyal dwarves in the same way

A drowning chamber works great too. The reason I went for magma is because it´s awesome, I don´t have that much water on my map, and it leaves behind the loot, unlike an atom smasher. A drowning room will take some setting up though, with bait, a way to close it off, and preferably using pressure and fortifications to keep the pumper away from the gobbos. I made it easy for myself with a field of cage traps and using dwarves to pit the goblins into the fire.

I'll have to look into setting up a safer way to do it. You are right though, magma is cooler, but i'm too scared to dig that deep un til I actually figure out how my military works.
