I just started playing this after reading the lparchive about boatmurdered, so much to learn, so little time.
so far the games pretty fun havent had any terrible messups yet but Ive only been like an hour or so in now, although I feel like my embark site is poop :[.
anyone else know any other games like this they could send in my direction also :O ive heard dungeon keeper been brought up just haven't had the time to go look at it yet.

Dungeon keeper 2 is fantastic, though i've heard some people have problems getting it to run on newer systems.
That said, it offers nothing like the depth of DF. I dont think anything does to be honest, at least not in the genre.

if I build walls outside of the cave to make my fortress, does it count as "inside" and does it have a roof? Does it require flooring?
I am just tired or completely ruining my fortress because I'm surrounded with precious minerals, which I just haveeee to mine.
From dellwon, Thanks ! + Show Spoiler + Floors and roofs are not automatically created.
If you build walls outside and then put a floor above them on the next z level up it should consider everything under the floor as "inside". Floors are not required but you can build them with b -> C -> f and place them on top of almost anything (down stairs, grass, open space, etc...).
One thing to keep in mind is that if you build a floor somewhere you aren't allowed to build any other construction on that z level on that square. For example you cannot build a 3x3 floor then put an up stair in one of the corners. Instead you have to do this: XFF FFF FFF F = Floor X = Nothing
Then you need to build the up stairs where the X is.
Other things about construction:
If you build a wall dwarves are able to walk on top of it on the next z level so you don't really need a floor on that square.

I fucking hate my broker right now.
I embarked at a location without iron (at least, I haven't found any), so I am unable to make any anvils naturally. I've found a large vein of copper, however, so my metal works is underway from an anvil I purchased at a previous trade.
Since then, my fort has nearly tripled in size. I can now support 2 metalworkers. So I need another anvil. And, since I don't have any iron in site, I'm going to have to trade for an anvil, or for some iron.
Some humans showed up looking to trade just now. And I can see an anvil in the trade depot.
Score.
So I start sending some goods to the depot to trade. After a bunch of stuff is there, I request my broker to show up. I completely remove any other responsibilities of his, so he'll show up right away.
First, he decides he needs to grab something to eat. No biggie, the traders still have quite a while.
Then he decides to haul some stuff to the depot. Funny, I don't have any hauling labors setup for him. Meh, no biggie, maybe he'll stick around after delivering some stuff.
Then, after 3 or 4 trips, he decides to go take a snooze. Fucker. Whatever, I should still have tons of time to trade.
After he wakes up, he starts taking some more stuff to the depot. At this point, the traders are preparing to leave.
So, I decide to panic a little. I stop any further goods heading to the depot, just to make sure my broker has nothing to possibly do. And, what does he do? He goes to get something to eat. Again.
So I decide to allow anyone trade. This is far from ideal, but I need an anvil and some cloth and leather, and I can afford to trade a bunch of extra stuff at the moment.
Nobody shows up. And the traders leave.
It'll be quite a while till my next chance to grab an anvil - elves are due to show up to trade with me next.
Hopefully they have some steel/iron goods I can use instead.
So, I have to think of some creative way to kill my broker now, because of how badly this guy just let me down. Any suggestions?

So I have a dwarf who has 30 kittens... that dwarf alone is causing a huge drp in FPS, I am debating putting a end to him and his cuddly things.
Edit: Creative way to a kill broker. If you have goblin cages lock him in a room full of goblin cages activated via lever, or any time of feral beast.
Make a drowning chamber, Force a cave in of his bedroom. The possibilities are endless.

I've ben searching for 2 hours now. Now I have a good idea about what makes a good embark area I cant seem to settle for anything less than ideal..... very annoying. Might have something to do with being pillaged by goblins so many times I guess Ya i'm exactly the same way, it has to have a volcano, mountains to build in, and the land outside of my fort has to be the the same level so that I can see everything in the plains easily. I crank up the number of volcanoes, evil, and rainfall. And still can spend hours looking for an ideal spot. Nothing is worse then getting everything set up in a fort and realising you wish you didn't pick there. Wow, I feel like I'm way less picky..... I'm pretty new to the game, but for me, I just want some flux stone, shallow metals (which in combination with flux stone is pretty rare), clay, a source of water (river, ponds, or aquifiers), and a fair amount of trees on the surface. Same here. If you need a flat surface you can just shave it all offXD The standard world generation settings are pretty bad for getting iron + flux in this version, if you set mineral frequency very high you get tonnes of 1-2 types of metals but never get any flux, and if you set it low iron is ridiculously hard to find.
What I do is go to advanced word gen, and change the mineral scarcity from 2500 to ~750. Also change from islands to a region if you don't like aquifers, because with islands there is sea everywhere and hence aquifers on 90% of tiles. I leave everything else on defaults but you can lower the end year if you want to speed up the process as I believe it defaults to 1000 years. Also to save time I suggest googling dfhack and using dfprospector tool to find out if you have iron and flux because the embark screen can lie.

Hmm, I'm trying to just suck it up and choose an embark that I don't think is totally perfect.
Something like a terrifying tundra with no trees or soil, and I won't bring tools along either. Maybe just a crossbow, and I'll allow myself a volcano because magma is just indispensable fun.

Looks good to me...maybe I'll do a bit of a small journal on happenings. I had fun doing my succession journal, and it seems like people really enjoy reading them. I certainly do.
@disquiet: Exactly! It's fun having under and overforts...but having your dwarves climb 100z levels for no reason or having to shift everything around isn't.

One of my dwarfs has like 15 guinea pigs, I have thus dubbed him Artosis.
EDIT: Artosis died, with all his guinea pigs by his side. He encountered a forgotten beast that had deadly fumes.
A statue has been raised in his memory...
RIP Artosis Rakustonim, May your guinea pigs be with you in the future.

Hahaha, it's PERFECT.
Any and all dwarf fortress write ups are great. Just because of the sheer amount of CRAP that goes on in your fortress.
Dwarves are stupid and people love reading about people doing stupid things..

I get this problem all the time too, very frustrating when you're relying on a trade for essential items. When it happened to me last I desperately needed to trade for booze as all the water had frozen over and I was having trouble gathering enough plants in the embark zone. Many Dorfs died because of that broker.

Please do write updates, always fun to read and it'll be interesting to see how you get on in that area!

Is there a way to fill in an old pond? I drained a pond near my starting area to get my farming going, but now there's an awkward open space on the ground. Is there any way I can fill that in?
Can Dwarfs walk over it if so?

If you change the trade depot setting from "Only Broker May Trade" to "Anyone May Trade" (b), any available dwarf will come to handle the trading (lower broker skill gets you worse deals), good for emergencies like these.

Going down a z-level and using build-construction-wall will fill it in, but if you just want to make a floor over it you can use build-construction-floor.
Edit: You could also build a bridge over it, hook it up to a mechanism, and have a pit trap

At the moment, my idea is to send him to wrestle with some alligators that are roaming near my fortress.

So my hunters just killed a moose, and then just dragged its corpse to the refuse pile.
Can't I eat it? o.O

You have to butcher it first. Set up a butcher shop, and make sure someone's enabled butchery.
You'll also get a heap of bones, fat and animal hide doing that. Tan the leather to make leather stuff, and use the bones for practice bolts or decoration or something.

It's also useful to stockpile a few bones for when someone gets in a fey mood, i've often been caught without them and it can be a real pain

One of my Dorfs has been hunting vermin for food, despite having plenty of food in the stockpiles, and having just killed a moose. I guess she likes rats or something, lol.
So I have a bunch of tame oxen wandering around. How do I mark them for slaughter? We're about to have a food crisis lol.

Once the caravan starts arriving (as in enters the map) just set your broker to have no jobs enabled (including hauling) so he has nothing better to do than go to the depot and trade. Even if he eats/sleeps/drink he should still have plenty of time to trade.
