I hate that though, a very similar thing happened to me, the brridge was up to allow the traders in and no one bothered to close it promptly when the goblins showed up. Babies were taken, goods were stolen, hissy fits were thrown, no one was happy.

Now my dorfs can get to all areas of the upper wall, but for some reason still occasionally think a certain block is impossible to build. So I have to de-mark it, re-build it, and then they can build it without a hitch. Dunno what's up with that. Insane weaponsmith just died of thirst t.t;; edit: What the shit does an anvil cost? New caravan just showed up and they won't trade an anvil, (of which they have 3) for 7 bins full of gems.... JERKS Are you sure that you are not offering stuff which is too heavy for the merchants? I don't see why they wouldn't trade as long as you offer items which are worth enough. It really sucks that your weaponsmith died though. It takes forever to get a legendary one unless you get a mood or a really high level migrant. Lots of forging and melting *-*

I'm going to seal him under my fort, and let him "explore" a vein of adamantine. He'll find endless amounts of FUN eventually.

+ Show Spoiler + The History of Bellsloved, at Rithaval ![]() Besides the stuff shown, I embarked with an axe and partial set of bronze armor. The armor ended up being really use later, but not for fighting... ![]() 3st Granite 101, in the Early Spring. ![]() Not pictured: wondrous natural beauty and verdant forests (From the journals of Shorast Tulonasteb) This is the third day we have been stranded in this frozen wasteland. All four wagon wheels sunk a foot deep into mud while we were sleeping, which then froze stronger than tempered steel. The rusty pick someone tossed in the back of the wagon for Armok knows what reason shattered before digging and inch into it. We lost our leader to carp just a fortnight ago, and my companions have defaulted to me, the eldest of the remaining, as leader. I secretly fear the Mountainhomes will never see or hear from us again, save for maybe our frozen corpses. I've seen to it that Olin or Kadol will find game if there is any to be found in these wastes. The rest of us might as well twiddle our thumbs in the meantime... 6th Granite Kadol beheaded a muskox, and Olin shot one down with his crossbow. I ordered that the wagon be dismantled so that we may butcher the animal. Perhaps we will not starve to death after all, although we still lack any form of shelter. Mid-Summer ![]() Time is impossible to keep track of in the tundra. There is no wood to speak of beyond that which came with the wagon, and we cannot access any stone. We are sustaining ourselves on what the hunter can bring in. The other day, Olin the hunter slew four ice wolves by himself. Our axedwarf somehow managed to avoid fighting altogether, though he possesses superior armor and weapons. Such a coward. 8th Malachite I have ascertained the date from a few stray dwarves who joined our camp. None of them brought a pick, the useless idiots. Early Autumn One of our new migrants was wounded on the mountainside and will probably thirst to death because no one will bring him anything to drink, being that we have only booze available. Late Autumn ![]() I regret sharing our drink with the migrants. We are out of booze and everyone is thirsting to death. If there is no help from the outside world within the month we will all die. 13th Timber Thank Armok! A dwarven caravan has arrived, though I know not how they managed to determine our location. ![]() We don't have much to trade with them though. Someone pulled the migrant's corpse off of the mountain. He has a giant spider silk robe which will purchase us plenty of goods. 15th Timber I have offered all we have to the traders, yet we will have not enough to afford a pick. I have purchased some drink so that we will not die in the meantime. 16th Timber There is a volcano to the northwest. I have purchased a forge with the little supplies we had left to trade. The accursed merchants brought nothing in the way of metal bars which could be used to make a pick, so we will be forced to buy some cheap object and melt it down in the fires of the mountain. 27th Timber We have purchased all the wood available from the merchants, and have started building a staircase down into the volcano. Winter is upon us, and we will all freeze to death unless we can dig into the earth to create a shelter. ![]() If the volcano had cliffs a few more z-levels higher I wouldn't have had enough blocks to make a staircase down. 17th Moonstone It turns out that we have only one block of magma safe material. I mistakenly ordered that the forge be constructed first, so we were forced to tear it down and build a smelter in its stead. 21st Moonstone The militia captain will have to surrender his breastplate for the cause. 7th Opal The first pick has been created! Strike the earth! ![]() 14th Opal The earth beneath our camp can be farmed. Our luck seems to be turning around! Now that we have a pick, we were able to salvage the wood we used to build the staircase in the volcano. Perhaps we will make some beds next. 2nd Granite One of the stray dogs who hangs around our camp started attacking everything around it! I've ordered it slaughtered. ![]() ![]() Is it possible for animals to throw tantrums? Everyone was stuck in the snow for months, so it certainly seems like it could be possible. A month or two later, one of my turkeys went crazy in a similar manner and started attacking everything around it. 3rd Granite Our miner dug through all the way to an expansive underground cavern. I have heard of the dangers of these places, but with it looks as though we may sustain ourselves there, and perhaps even cut some wood. ![]() (sidenote: it appears as though the dwarves are being prevented from going insane simply through their own inactivity. They have been stuck outside for almost a year, nearly thirsted to death, regularly get caught in snow storms, and have no chairs or beds to sleep in. However, all but one of them are ecstatic. By look at their social stats, I can only assume that they are maintaining their happiness just by talking to each other. The only exception is the thresher, who has been continuously making bone bolts since he arrived in the first migration wave.) 20th Granite The weaponsmith Sigun and the woodcrafter(I must assign her some other job -- we have no wood) Zefon were married today. I performed the ceremony myself, as we lack any sort of other official presence. 14th Slate The caverns underground contain a giant freshwater lake. We are all thirsty again, but if we build a well over this it should sustain us until barrels can be made to brew in. Until the well is completed, we can drink directly from the lake. It seems as though the cavern lacks any sort of hostile creatures, for the moment. 13th Felsite It has been more than a year since we embarked, and the situation has drasically improved since the dwarven caravan arrived. I'm no longer worried about all of us dying, and we can now focus on more than just huddling together for warmth. ![]() No chairs or tables yet T_T My only industry for 75% of the first year was based off of hunting. ![]() The beginnings of a fortification ![]() Based on the amount of imported wealth, there's a lot of HFS. I haven't been able to brew anything -- no barrels yet (no trees at all). I have my metalsmith making copper barrels though.

My dwarves have been stranded in a small wooden fortress for 3 years now and only two (out of 45)are unhappy so far. I guess non are happy still though so maybe that doesn't support your findings. In any case, at least you've gotten under ground. After three years I've yet to get past the aquifer on underground level 3... GLHF

I find that if you can get a shit ton of pumps going it sometimes works. It's never easy though, unless you have a volcano you can tunnel through.

What have you tried to get past the aquifer so far? I tried pumps but once the water was pumped outside it froze. More information: + Show Spoiler + http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=228813 I tried to dig through the river hoping the cold would keep freezing the water on every level so I could mine it out as ice. More information: + Show Spoiler + http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=229176 I have another plan I'm going to try soon but I have to sac a dwarf for it. I just don't have the patience to test every ~20 squares for a hole in the aquifer. Plus, that's not FUN.

Theres a video of a dude doing it and explaining. Basically you collapse a large square of ground into the water layer, and use that to dig through.

Also note the more layers an aquifer has the bigger the hole you will need and the longer it will take. Trying to break though a three level aquifer with pumps is extremely tedious, but a 1 level is pretty easy.

The only way I can cause a "cave in" is by building a tall tower supported by one wall and then sending a brave soul into remove the single wall. Unless there's another way. But that way seems pretty FUN.

Here are some impressions of my latest fort - its pretty safe and stable, most dwarfs are happy and my military is well equipped and trained. Sadly I only get around 25fps, because my population has grown to 250. Should have done some birth control :o There are some notations, but they are part german (posted this elsewhere before). But in any case, here is my massive fort: ![]() ![]() ![]() Here you see the main above-ground layout, with the constructed and natural walls constricting points of entrance. My legendary marksmen guard those entrances in turns from key location or from the front tower. And if anything gets past the marksmen, they usually meet my army training in the courtyard. Also I made a dwarfen sauna (mist generator), which keeps my dwarfs very happy :3 ![]() ![]() ![]() I like organizing my stockpiles, so I can instantly see how much stuff I got... good thing I have pretty much LOTS OF EVERYTHING. Also notice the fancy King's Rooms (with a bath and extra treasure vaults :3) and the "siege defence entrance" at the left. Thats also where I drop spare cows, donkeys and horses at enemys. The statue garden at the lower left sadly got ruined by pets, since they don't care about staying on the paved ways. I wanted a green haven for my dwarfs to stroll, not a mud-pit with dogs and donkeys everywhere /o\ ![]() ![]() The only thing I've been missing is a source for magma. I've got lots of caverns below my fortress, so its kinda tedious to work through them - but I don't really need magma anyway.

Also, how long does blood stick around for? I don't know what I missed, but the main stairwell of my fortress looks like a crime scene from hell. Turkey, badger, moose, and dorf blood everywhere. Not sure what happened though, but it must have been fun. edit: Our first forgotten beast! While my very brave military dorfs have slain the creature, one of them was horridly injured and the poor bitch is bleeding everywhere. Her profile fills up the *entire* screen with red text, detailing how every single part of her body is broken, rotting, or whatever. Time to hurry up and build a hospital asap T_T oman she bled all over the entirety of my central stairway, and now miasma is spawning on every floor ffffffffff edit: One more quick question, lol. One of my dwarfs died, and his corpse is on top of a tree. I have no idea how he got there, or wtf he was doing, but his corpse is on top of a tree outside the fortress. He's been haunting us for a while now, and I can't seem to get his corpse back. Even tried building stairways up to him, but he seems a bit out of reach. Any solutions? He's causing all sorts of fun by preventing my other dorfs from sleeping!
