One thing I would recommend is getting Nintendo Switch Online as you get a bunch of old NES/SNES classics. Both good for nostalgia but also my kid loved them, easier to learn on 2D planes.

S/A+/A tier games are the ones I highly, highly recommend. B+/B are solid. I found C+/C to be just okay. ![]() I also just completed the main story and the regular post-game storyline for Pokemon Shield, and I think I'm going to stop there. After collecting over 200 Pokémon, I really can't bring myself to play the game anymore, let alone catch 'em all this time around. Too much redundancy at this point in time, and not enough reward. Here are all my thoughts on the game, as someone who hasn't played since Gen2 (Silver) but obsessively played and knew everything about Gen1 (Blue): Likes: 1. Open-world, 3-D universe with regions that make sense and reward exploration. 2. Comfortable, nostalgic, Pokémon-esque feeling and a soundtrack that brought back some great memories. A few nice Easter eggs too. 3. Searching for specific Pokémon types is made way easier. 4. Gaining experience is greatly streamlined, from always sharing experience among your party to even leveling up when you catch Pokémon. 5. Traveling from region to region is so much more efficient. 6. Other quality-of-life improvements, like combining the Pokémon Centers with the Poké Marts. 7. I'm a sucker for customization and costumes, so a tip of the hat for the ability to accessorize. 8. The ability to actually see most of the Pokémon ahead of time, before engaging in a battle, is totally awesome. I appreciate the not-so-random encounters. Dislikes: 1. The storyline was really predictable, and at some points just plain lazy. 2. There were some serious retcons of original Pokémon, moves, and items that really ticked me off. Sometimes I felt like my childhood was literally being betrayed. 3. My head-canon will forever be that Bede is an ornery old woman with white hair, not a young boy. You can't trick me. 4. Dude. Hop is the most fucking annoying kid ever. I miss Gary. 5. The game is so easy and so simplified, that I didn't even have to grind. At all. I just went through the game at a pretty standard pace, and easily beat everyone. Even in the post-game, the difficulty level is a joke. I honestly didn't even feel like I earned my wins; I just went through the motions and won everything, all the time. 6. I never thought I would say this, but I wish there were *more* Pokémon battles with other trainers. With the exception of the few gym trainers and leaders, there was a serious dearth of showdowns. 7. Pretty sure I only used my money to accessorize my character (and to buy Poké Balls). I never needed to use items in fights, let alone whatever the other tabs (like berries) were. The only "held items" I ever used were two items that gave me more money and two items that occasionally replenished small amounts of health. I didn't use 99% of the things I picked up in the game. 8. Since the game was so effortless, I never even felt encouraged to switch in any new Pokémon I caught. I'm sure the late-game, high-level Pokémon I caught are really good, but I just used the same six Pokémon for the whole game. Had no reason not to, really. 9. I thought the concepts of Dynamax and Gigantamax and all those other maxes were pretty lame. Subjective, but really not for me. 10. Minor parts of the graphics, visuals, rendering, and collisions were laughably bad.

I just font understand why there is no hard mode... I really don’t get why there isn’t, makes no sense to me. Games are piss easy for someone like me, on the other hand for any new entrant they’re pretty ideal so we shouldn’t lose track of the new Pokemon fans. Difficulty options seem like by far the easiest solution to this.

After the last 2 gens, they clearly either don't have any idea what veterans of the series want or don't care.

It’s still my favorite genre. But these types of things have existed since the early 90s when I started playing this genre and it has barely gotten better. There are games (Persona 5) that actually do a good job at it. But there are games that just suck at it like Pokémon. How many generations did it take game freak to realize that some people don’t want to be asked to nickname every single Pokémon they caught?

It's super subjective, of course, so I definitely recommend watching any game trailers and a few minutes of gameplay on YouTube for any games. This standard difficulty level is clearly the equivalent of Easy mode; I think it'd be great to have one or two levels of higher difficulty.

You could probably make a fun VR game that focused purely on batting. Cricket games I’ve played don’t really do any of the constituent parts of the game well, but I’d love to play a pure batting game that did it properly. Like a good session in the nets

While the story is your classic japanese game and super predictable, the gameplay of Astral Chain is Platinum Games certified, I would definitely recommend this game if you are looking for a fast paced hack and slash 3d action game. If you have ever played the likes of DMC/Darksiders/Ninja Gaiden/Nier Automata or any Platinum Games game you will like this game (complete with great soundtrack)

I stopped playing Octopath halfway through, the only Switch game I didn't finish to date. For me I'd move Xenoblade 2 up to S tier and Octopath somewhere in D or F ![]() Also quite liked Astral Chain. Definitely subjective, of course! I played OT during a time when I was really in the mood for an old-school, NES-style RPG. I loved the music and the storyline and the graphics and the battle system, and it was super-nostalgic for me. I thought XC2, on the other hand, was literally the most overrated game I've ever played. As someone who was seriously disappointed by Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I'm absolutely loving Ys 8, and it's everything I had hoped XC2 was going to be. Much better battling system, leveling system, movement system, controls, and even storyline. Also, the music is AMAZING. XC2 was just so awkward and clunky and lacking in so many fundamental areas for me, but that's definitely an unpopular opinion, based on how highly it's rated by most review sites. It just didn't resonate with me. Astral Chain is on my list of "eventual buys" ![]()
