I attribute this fact to the absurd number of stacks I keep seeing thrown my way even on Normal difficulty. Was playing as empire, by turn 100 I had several provinces up to T5 and had wiped out the vampires. Turn 109 rolls out and Chaos arrives, I then proceed to spend the next 70 turns playing wack-a-mole with all the forces of chaos and the norsca. There are also now 3 or 4 new Chaos factions which will instantly make a bee-line for you as soon as the main chaos forces arrive. I finally stabilized and killed off all the forces of chaos but man it was hell and it cost me my entire treasury. Before the war I had a 300k gold stockpile which I consumed entirely rebuilding settlements from the raids and raising new stacks...

I was thinking the same thing. I'm almost never get to 30k in the first 100 turns, much less 300k.

It's just, upgrading buildings is so awfully expensive and so damn important, I simply wonder how he manages to save. I rarely stay above 10k for more than one or two turns.

I don't think it's that. I never had this level of problems controlling handgunners in TWW1. They aren't picking targets properly when left to their own devices. If there's a choice between a target with an obstructed line of sight and a target that's in he open, my handgunners will often target the obstructed target and do nothing. Sometimes my handgunners just sit and do nothing even with a target right in front of them. I really don't know what's going on other than I'm having problems where I didn't used to. EDIT: And just to give a concrete example, one of my favorite defensive tactics during siege battles in TWW1 was to line up handgunners inside my walls at points where the enemy would be engaging my melee units on the walls. This would give me an easy shot at the flanks of the enemy. For whatever reason, I can't get that shot anymore. I kinda wonder whether they changed the handgunner firing angle.

I hope they change that back (Lorthern Sea Guards might get way to strong though) and add the chaos mechanic from warhammer 1 as well or something new entirely. But I think the vortex chaos mechanic is just a placeholder. Hope they will enhance Mortal realms, even if one has to pay for it. Found out that Rat Poison is anti skaven tech now :D. I really hoped it would haha.

Watch one of the many popular streamers. Focus on how to not fuck up on the strategic level and how to excel at the tactical level. Learn the basic UI stuff (the key commands, how control groups work, locked formations, unit cards, etc.). There are some great youtube tutorials. Edit: I highly recommend the game... would warn that the in-game tutorial is nigh on worthless.

I also highly recommend watching LegendOfTotalWar's Bretonnia playthrough (for WH1) because it gives you some really good insights into diplomacy, upkeep, trading, cost-effectiveness (economy in general) as well as some good strategies (some might be a bit cheesy but that's legendary difficulty for you) for fighting stronger opponents with weak troops.
