Except these games are much older. At that state GG will have 20 players as it is going

Hey all,
Just to clear things up on this topic:
We had actually prototyped 6 and 8 player maps at the start of the project with the intention of releasing them to the public. But, as the project progressed, we felt that it was more important for players to have a reasonable level of performance in a multiplayer game, and there were hardware concerns, as Lemondrop mentioned in his first point. Additionally, we wanted to give players the 200 population cap as the goal was to have a more macro focused game with more units per player. Ultimately, performance must increase before we can consider bringing those maps back onto the table.

glad they agree, with performance concerns in 1v1, more than 4 players is out of the question IMO (unless supply cap was ~75-100)
Couldn't you guys at least allow 3v3 and 4v4 custom maps with the "Play at your own risk" disclaimer attached. The could be unofficial non-sanctioned maps but it would at least allow those of us who LAN and who have beefed up machines to play those larger maps?
lol (insert "no cpu on the planet" rant)

The last balance Announcement of the announcement was hilarious, if I didn't know better I would think Incontrol works in their PR department :D

They have to do something to please the somewhat annoyed community. Radio silence would be much worse.

Steamchart for ra3 is pretty much useless, since the game was not on steam at release. So most players will have it either on disc or on origin.

And DoWII is not a RTS but RTT like CoH.

So, out of curiosity, for you guys who are following GG and Starcraft both:
1 - If Starcraft 2 had not been the sequel to sc1, and didn't have an instant esports scene, how do you think sc2 would have done on launch compared to other rts games? (I know warcraft 2, god bless, stood on its own bloodlusting merit.)
2 - What do you think of GG from a sc2 player perspective? Is it fun? Do you even play for fun, or is it for competition? What does GG need, or what from GG could sc2 borrow profitably?
(the problems of sc2 - lets not get too into these, we could write a 1000 page book from what has already been said on TL about that)
I know, lets not start a XvsY fight, but I want to develop games one day and I want to know what you think

Actually, for me, that is a major reason I'm drawn to GG. I guess rather than saying rts, I should have said... action packed battle of wits?

(I know warcraft 2, god bless, stood on its own bloodlusting merit.) Worse. While SC2 is a good game with merit of its own, it simply hasn't evolved to be as good of a game as Brood War was and is. A lot of the scene was built upon the prospect of being able to make money playing starcraft, and too many progamers will admit that they enjoyed Brood War more. I personally think that, with a reasonable run-of-the-mill large company promotion budget, it would be about 1/5 to 1/3 its current size, but also with less money invested in its success. SC2 feels like it's in a slow but certain death spiral, and LotV release is probably going to be its last high point. We're just not that big of an RTS culture.

It could use more balancing, and more units that promote interesting strategies. Also it could use more unit speed upgrades. It also needs patching.

The games feel different when playing them (just like playing a MOBA feels different although there a lot of similarities to RTS games) and as such need a different name RTT fits well.

wc3 and bw were huge, but the vast majority of people playing them 5-10 years after launch were doing it for custom maps. I think they could do fine with a warcraft 4 if they take a hard look at what players of all skill levels and time investments want

Nope, that's as silly as calling SC2 an RTT because it has lots of tactics and you don't recognise the strategy. There are resources and technology and you have to manage them and you can change the course of the resource income during the game, which are the differences between an RTT and an RTS. They are not RTT, and you can't expain them why they count as RTT except as a figment of your imagination.

I am still calling it RTT so we know it is different than collecting resources and having a base RTS games.
|
That's nice, you know I am right, you just don't want to admit it.
|
No, I just don't need to waste my time with this argument. It is not like you are mod here and can ban me for using RTT term how I see fit.

Aren't you wrong there? Doesn't CoH have a form of resource gathering? RTT would be something like Total War or Wargame

What is RTT? Real Time Tactics lol....No. This is an RTS just like SC2 and BW, its just it is not on the same level of difficulty, a lot of the things in this game are dumbed down. This is absolutely an RTS, I feel an RTT would be something like Ogre Battle for N64, or Final Fantasy, but I don't play those games so I don't know, and I know I am probably wrong but about that but still....this is an RTS.
EDIT : GG feels like a mixture of Command and conquer and StarCraft for me. My experience playing Goo, it absolutely is a " build a base and outmacro your opponent " type of RTS.
