Please be advised:
We will be closing this General thread in 24 hours. It will remain searchable.
After that we will require new threads to discuss topics.
Questions should go in the stickied Q&A thread, screenshots and PotG will go in the PotG sticky, QQ/Rage/Complaints should go in the QQ/Rage thread. If you want to talk about maps or strategies open a new thread.
Any comments or concerns will be logged please forward them to ZeromuS. This new forum is still fluid so we will try this out. General TL rules will still apply to new threads. |

pretty sure blizzard can make them watch overwatch too
Sc2 was already extremely popular to watch 1 month into the closed beta. Years before Blizzard actually gave it attention.
You also know that Blizzard didn't even make a launch party for Sc2, right? The launch party was completely community-driven and the commentary of the "launch"-tornament was based on replays.

Sc2 was kind of a weird launch though, right? Like Blizzard at that point in time had largely abandoned all IP other than Warcraft for years. I guess that just makes it weirder that sc2 had no launch party.

It was a different time back then. Esports and live streaming wasn't really wasn't a big thing before Sc2.

Back with SC2's beta having 1000 viewers on Justin.TV was pretty much completely unheard of. In think the kings of the beta tournament by Day9 had like 10k viewers and people almost shit their pants.

Yeah, it was a great time for gaming. Now if a game, especially if it's made by Blizzard, doesn't succeed as a "spectator sport"(whatever the hell that means), it's a flop and nobody should care about it.
For me Overwatch is suffering from the same thing as HotS. It's really team orientated. The solo experience is not good. It's better than HotS, but still not ideal.
edit: Also, Zarya is my waifu !

So I'm gonna ask a question here:
I generally HATE gen threads. As I think its better to have different topics opened for the various discussions, so that people can ask more questions and get more detailed answers and back and forth.
We also have a simple q simple A thread for the very small stuff as well.
How would you all feel about me locking this thread (it stays for search, posterity, etc) and just letting you all use different threads with OPs to discuss things?
Moderation on OP quality would be relaxed for the first little bit to encourage discussion and with time we would require higher quality OPs to open discussion threads. This will also allow us to implement tags such as [S] (Strategy for general strategy discussions) [G] (guide for heros or compositions) [D] for general discussions etc
Thoughts?

I like general discussion threads for a game this new with so many players experiencing it for the first time. That way people can come in here to rage about Bastion and we can tell him how simple he is to deal with and things of that nature.

My main concern is this turns into LoL and Heroes forums where all we have is rotating Gen.Discussions.
I don't want to create that expectation and I wonder if its better to rip off that bandaid now or later and how we decide the "right time"
The only reason this thread exists is frankly because it moved from the "Other Games" forum to here.
I really want this subforum to be community driven so I am looking for feedback but at the same time I have noticed that a lot of discussions end up going for tops 3 or 4 posts before they derail and you often end up with the same questions over and over.
Again -- bastion OP how do I kill? I think that can fit into the Simple Q&A. Maybe have a QQ thread if people want a place to just vent frustrations

The usefulness of rotating general topics in the Heroes forum is that each patch is its own thing. As soon as a new patch with balance fixes and/or new hero hits, pretty much all the old discussions are null and void.
Given Overwatch's price structure, that format might not make sense here.

The CSGO board has a general thread called Counter Strike: Global Offensive and I think it's good. It goes in every direction at random and it's fine. If you want to organize the conversation into threads instead of having this anarchic but not unpleasant flow, make threads and the general convo will naturally flow to the more targeted topics, leaving a slower general thread for random comments and thoughts.

It may be alright to have a slower gen thread, I just wonder how to encourage people to actually push conversations into community driven OPs instead of just a slowly growing gen thread?
I do see the point to wanting somewhere to collect random comments and thoughts though, so thats a good point zapz

I'm all for killing Gen. Thread, it is never properly moderated and often creates an inner-circle of veterans that don't venture out. Also, people use it to create new discussion through it and makes it harder to archive or remove redundant topics.
It's an overlap imo.

Seems like maybe a thread for each hero and each map might be useful assuming they aren't going to be adding new heroes and maps on a regular basis.

Well the scene was mostly youtube-based.
That aside, 10K people watching games casted from replays isn't bad.

A lot of people won't open new threads and just won't say anything if there's no appropriate thread for it. Might not be a big loss, but it's up for you guys to decide.
If you want to have a general thread + topical threads, you want either an active base of people making relevant threads when things come up or some "community manager" with a sense for what's relevant enough to deserve a thread. CS gets threads when a big tourney is happening, we have the patch thread, we have a few other things but I think the board greatly suffers from a lack of threads. It seems like people don't want to make them because it seems too heavily regulated. Might just be an impression. Point is if you want to remove the general thread you want a good number of active threads.

Well after playing some more...
Tracer is actually fun without being OP in anyway. Does a lot of damage but consistently landing all your ammo on a target isn't easy and Pulse Bomb is so hard to really land on someone.
Dv.a pistol damage is OP as fuck. Full auto and high damage. She should be crippled once she loses her mech, not just swap out health for damage. Whenever the mech dies I just pewpew into the enemy team and get a new mech easy.
Junkrat damage is just silly. He is a ton of fun to play for sure, but his grenade launcher damage needs reducing IMO. Just spamming into the enemy team does so much damage and his ultimate is a guaranteed multi-kill.
Bastion is just stupid if you don't have long-range high-damage heroes and I won't even go into detail on Tank mode other than that Tank mode shots deal atleast 200 damage since I've been one-shotted by him often whilst playing 200 health characters. Double or triple Bastion is just no fun to play against if you are attacker, especially if they have Reinhardt for shielding and a Mercy for rezzing if you do manage to kill one. Atleast Soldier is decent against him thanks to his alt-fire rockets.
Dragon ult from Hanzo is being abused wildly with line of sight and sending it through walls and barricades. By the time it emerges from the wall and you can actually see it, it's already too late. Also had one where he used it into the floor at one level lower. You couldn't even see it but it murdered everything on the floor just above it. Maybe it's Blizzard intention to be a nest/camp killer but it's too strong right now.
They also need to fix Roadhog's hooking issues. Sometimes a hooked target ends up completely to your side, nearly ensuring a miss and letting the hooked target murder you instead. He is still a ton of fun to play regardless.
The game is fun but some ultimates I feel are just either way too easy and powerful (Riptire, Barrage, Dragon ult) or nearly impossible to pull off (High Noon).

Overwatch stuff can't be accessed from LiquidDota? TT

Thats my biggest problem with it. It's hard to moderate and it makes it hard if not impossible to make the search function worthwhile and effective.
If it ever does become a standalone forum as well like liquid hearth/legends/dota I dont want to have the liquid legends gen discussion culture propogate its way over there where you have a site dedicated to effectively a handful of threads.

The funny thing is your experiences are EXACTLY what a new player will go through then change their minds.
Those ults are actually some of the harder less impactful ones compared to High Noon, which is always worth it. Every time.

I thought about this for a bit - and I think closing it after the open beta is over or before launch is the best idea.

The only reason this thread exists is that it predates the forum. I'd imagine it'd be archived for less general threads once the game actually launches and actual coverage starts going up, but for now there's no reason not to have it.
