ah well. xbox/ps4 don't have terrabyte sized HDD's like computers do. So when y ou have a game like uncharted 3 that's 50 gigs you'd rather have it on a disc. Not to mention the length of time it'd take to download whether it's because of your own internet or their servers. Well, theoretically, the PS4 could because the PS4 uses normal 2.5" HDDs that are user-replaceable.
Anyway, this is a good move from Microsoft, although I'm a bit disappointed they got rid of the family share program along with this announcement. That would have been a nice up on Sony, but instead they're just content with reaching the status quo.

I forgot about TB. Damn so many people have to eat crow for defending this with their ludicrous arguments.

That's true for the ps4, but have we heard how the xbone HDD is going to be setup? Also you can't share downloaded games at all so console gamers should still stick to physical media.

Who would have thought consumers want choice and flexibility? I think a lot of the features MS wanted to implement were good, they just did a terrible job actually implementing them. It should never even been considered that the console automatically turns into brick because there's no internet for a couple days. There's no doubt you better the experience using the internet, but to make it mandatory is just ridiculous, and even with sharing games between consoles I think you could implement it in a way that doesn't stop your gaming completely when it can't authenticate online.
|
MS also did a terrible job at selling the console.
They way they were so unprepared to answer questions from military personal, late night talk show hosts and having an inconsistent message were so many signs of them being unprofessional. Easily one of the biggest collective brainfarts seen by a company in decades.
Too bad family sharing had to be the sacrificial lamb.

They took their time but finally they realize how stupid their concept was.
Edit : And right when I post this, the website goes on maintenance. They decided to remove the always connected requirement as well as allow 360 games to be played on the Xbox One.

Great job guys.
It still has a lot of issues with it, but it's good to know that our voice can be heard

Good move but doesn't diminish the damage. If anything it means they knew the Xbox One could play 360 games, and didn't need to be constantly online to check validation. So they outright lied in hopes of getting rid of the used games which they believed was costing them money.

MS is fighting from such a deficit that this didnt phase me much at all. I bought 2 360s and had multiple die on me and STILL only quit when I didnt want XBL fees anymore. Yet the XBONE has done so much damage to MS in terms of my opinion of them and their lack of respect for me as a consumer, that I just don't care about the console anymore. Especially since exclusives are going the way of the dodo for huge AAA games. I just don't see why I would want a weaker console, with more ram of a weaker variety dedicated to non gaming tasks, with a more expensive online fee and less exclusives that are original and interesting. The problem is MS is trying to simply be on EQUAL footing with sony, but sony has things MS won't be able to make up for that are very basic yet fundamental.
-100 dollars cheaper and MUCH fairer prices around the world (US isnt the only country that buys stuff MS) -more powerful hardware -less ram being forced to help with tv/sports/tv/sports/tv/sports stuff (I get it, the OS does cool stuff, but it's about live tv which is NOT A THING outside the US and UK or me personally) -did not try to publicly rip away most of my control over my games and essentially tried to make the console a brick if you didn't check in every 24hours.
It's about perception, and to be honest, I don't trust MS. Sony had the good sense to look at this and say "this wont fly with consumers, why even try?" MS thought they were smarter than everyone, and were arrogant enough to think their product was better or that people didn't care. Well guess what? I STILL don't care because your best effort to become competitive with Sony was simply saying "lol jk we won't do that stuff." If you really want to beat sony, lower the price, stop forcing kinect and make XBL cheaper. But you won't do that, because you've put yourself into a corner with your decisions on hardware.
Again, I've bought 800 dollars worth of consoles from MS and probably close to a thousand in games, but yet I still feel nothing from this announcement. All because MS has lost my trust and they STILL wont renege on the kinect crap. You know what's funny as well? MS didn't care about public sentiment when doing this, they cared about their horribly yields and lower pre order numbers along with the bean counters probably saying "at this rate, we're kinda in trouble if you don't pull your heads out of your asses." Whatever MS, you had your chance, and first impressions matter a lot.
|
Now Microsoft has to spend the next few months damage controlling the change since they were so happy with the DRM in the 1st place aswell as praying the 1st impressions people had of the console can be changed.
|
You need to provide a quote about playing 360 discs because it's understandable why that would be impossible. Any new console at launch requires hardware from the old console to be backwards compatible.
You definitely misread what they said.

Anyway, this is a nice sentiment from Microsoft and will stem the bleeding and draw back some of the hemorrhaged playerbase that they lost from E3, but it isn't enough to personally convince me to get one. The exclusives still aren't particularly drawing, and the lack of indie support with respect to self publishing/paid patches is still a deal-breaker.

This is precisely the big deal.
The fact that MS tried to pull this shit in the first place makes them look horrible. The fact that they so suddenly did a 180 with their shit after Sony so clearly dominated them in E3 makes them seem fickle too.
This is a great first step, but they got a lot of PR to do.

Indeed I misread. My bad.

so they really went back on some of their shit. god its so nice when a shitstorm has positive effects.
damage is done ofcourse and lotsa people wont by it out of spite but it gives them hope again.

Honestly I hope people still won't buy it. It shows not only do we not want that crap on our consoles but you even attempting to put that on us won't be tolerated. It's still in their vision, they still want to implement it, but for now it won't work. It'll come back next console generation.

It'll help them a bit but it won't undo all the damage. They might catch up a bit in the long run, years down the road when this whole deal is gone from people's minds. This is definitely the right decision. They need to think down the road now though and get some good exclusives to sell the system in a year or two after the natural price drops occur. Currently the only game that looked remotely interesting to me was Titanfall and that is available on PC. FPS on PC or Console, let me think about that one....

Well by the next generation (7-10 years) hopefully the internet infrastructure is a HELL of a lot better than it currently is and their "vision" might be a reality. What they wanted to do is the way things will eventually go but they jumped the gun big time.

This is exactly why you fucking bitch and moan and don't stop even when there is little chance of things getting reversed. Who would've guessed MS would do a completely 180 so soon? I'm glad MS reversed but what I am worried about is that this was their "initial" vision and they were pushing fucking HARD about 24 hour check ins that they might try and implement it in the future. I'm going with the PS4 still upon release and then after a couple of years when hopefully the Xbone falls down to $300 I'll be able to judge them on what they have offered. I wish em luck, at least Sony now has legitimate competition and that is good for everybody.
Oh yeah and OFFLINE CONSOLE GAMING HAS BEEN SAVED! For now...
