Wait until they are really, really busy, then start a war? Also, if you are sweden, neither france nor byzantium should be exceedingly problematic, as long as you maintain naval superiority. The AI is really bad at fighting overseas wars. Most probably they won't even be able to get to you at all.

I'm not really concerned about defense, I just want some nice sweet polish/british ports. Anyways I've decided to fight the hoards simply because I don't have to worry about a superpower

break alliance (I suggest call-to-arms them in a war they won't join so you don't get the relations hit), then enforce peace when England attacks

Hi guys, first time EU player. I'm starting a new game with usa in the American revolution and I'm having trouble with basically everything. I went through the tutorials. To start, I assigned a +production adviser, approved a few of the decisions and sent a diplomat to France. I assigned leaders to the armies and built some canals. What else should I be doing? Units take a long time to build. I don't have a lot of money. I managed to take out a few British attacks but they keep coming. My ports are starting to get blockaded.

I'd suggest starting a game at an earlier starting date. The game only lasts until 1821, so with a 1776 start you have only a really limited game, which is good for some short goals, like gaining independence as the US, but not really good to actually understand the game.

I'd suggest just playing one of the bigger nations in 1444. Castille, France, England, Ottomans, Austria. This allows you to understand how the game works. Usually, the game involves quite a bit of waiting, don't play at x1 speed at all times. Pick fights with neighbors who are weaker then you, and who don't have strong alliances. Get strong alliances yourself. Learn from your mistakes. You have a lot of time in a 1444 game, you don't need to conquer europe before 1500. It is perfectly fine to not do anything for 10-20 years in a row if you are recovering from a war or there is just no opportunity.

Just get out of the 100 years war as fast as possible. Best idea is probably to get rid of the mainland shit, you probably don't want to fight France unless you really know what you are doing, and as long as you have that stuff they will declare on you over and over.

how do i get a casus belli against scotland? I'm playing with the conquest of paradise expansion. I ended the 100 years war by giving France everything except calais. There's no mission to conquer Scotland at the start, should I just go for it?

I haven't played England, so i don't know how exactly it works, but i am pretty sure there is something that will help you form Great Britain, either missions or events. If you want a CB, there is a diplomatic action to forge a claim on a province you are bordering. But be aware that Scotland is surprisingly tough, especially if they get some assistance from elsewhere. If you want easy targets, i'd suggest Ireland.

You could fabricate a claim on one (or more) of their provinces. You could also try offering them a loan which, if they don't repay after the allotted time, will result in a casus belli.

as soon as you take ayrshire and fife from scotland in a war a mission should pop up to vassalize scotland, since it is too big at start

Remember if the Scottish don't take additional territory they get a combat bonus. I forget what stats get buffed for them but I remember losing it in my last game.
